WINTER 2016-2017 • DECEMBER – FEBRUARY FAMILY NEWSLETTER COMMITTED TO CARING With the 2016 election behind us, many people have asked, ‘what does this mean for Montefiore’? This is an excellent question, given that the vast majority of our revenue comes from government sources and healthcare policy and regulation dictates much of our operations. At this point, I can honestly say that it is too early to prognosticate on specific policy implications. We just don’t know exactly how the new administration will act on issues important to eldercare. While we can’t make specific predictions, I’d rather focus on some lessons we can take from this election process and current political landscape. This was probably the most divisive and nasty election ever. The talk during the election was negative, pessimistic and set about to divide us. But, when I come to work every day at Montefiore, I see a different view of our country. Firstly, we spend every day honoring the people that truly made America a great country. At our recent Veterans Day celebration, we pinned stars on dozens of residents, who bravely served our country in WWII and other deployments. We also care for many Holocaust survivors who endured the horror of concentration camps, came to America as immigrants and became the stalwarts of the community. These are the heroes that made America a great place and we are honored to care for them and stand by their side in times of need. Secondly, we can celebrate the diversity of the Montefiore community. At our celebration of the 25th anniversary of Montefiore in Beachwood, we welcomed 500 people from the community – from all walks of life and demographics – who came to the event because they support the work we are doing at Montefiore. Our residents, families, staff, board members and volunteers make up an incredibly diverse group of people, and we are all united behind Montefiore’s mission to provide compassionate care to our community. behind us, many people have asked, ‘what does this mean for Montefiore’? This is an excellent question, given that the vast majority of our revenue comes from government sources and

healthcare policy and regulation dictates much of our operations. At this point, I can honestly say that it is too early to prognosticate on specific policy implications. We just don’t know exactly how the new administration will act on issues important to eldercare.

While we can’t make specific predictions, I’d rather focus on some lessons we can take from this election process and current political landscape. Tucked away in the lobby of Montefiore is the Posh Nosh Café – a little retreat where residents can have a “nosh” while visiting with family and guests or where staff can take a break from their busy work day. Delicious freshly-prepared taco salads, barbecue chicken quesadillas or soft-serve ice cream sundaes (dispensed from our new soft-serve machine thanks to donors Lynn and David Heiman) are just a few of the many offerings you can choose from on the menu.

Under the direction of Posh Nosh Supervisor Tracey Minnillo, our dedicated volunteers always provide excellent service with a smile. Linda Angart, Gwen Alius, Penny Lashner, Javier Marks, Gayle Safenovitz, Mariah Sanders and Eden Skoff go above and beyond to ensure that all customers have a wonderful experience in a friendly environment by taking the time to greet and acknowledge each individual. As a result, our volunteers develop personal relationships with many of our devoted customers.

Volunteers are essential to running the Posh Nosh Café. Not only do they ring in customers’ orders on our computerized point of sale system, they also make

coffee, stock inventory and assist wherever is needed. We are currently in need for more volunteers to help in the Posh Nosh. If you or a member of your family would like to help serve a “slice of heaven,” contact me!

The Posh Nosh Café isn’t just a place to eat, but a place to have fun. Thanks to our volunteers, there are lots of activities taking place in our café area.

With the help of Tracey, Life Enrichment Manager Iuliia Marshall and volunteer Linda Angart, we are able to host a lively karaoke event on Friday mornings, called Fridayoke. This has become a sweet treat for everyone as residents, staff, family and volunteers gather to showcase their singing abilities and receive a free bowl of soft-serve ice cream when they participate.

In addition, plans are underway for a lovely evening dinner in the Atrium by reservations only. This meal will include a set menu, have live music and volunteer servers. This will be a great way for residents and their special friends or families to enjoy a great evening together.

Stay tuned for these and other special events!

our organization and feel good about how we are contributing to a more caring and hopeful country. We will continue to fight hard for policies that benefit Montefiore and seniors in the community such as the preservation and expansion of Medicaid and reimbursement levels that allow us to continue the high quality of care our residents, patients and family members expect. We will do so with optimism and hope, knowing our diverse team of caregivers provides for the people who have contributed so much to our country.

The History of HanukahThe Hanukah

holiday is an old one. It honors the struggle of ancient Jews to restore the Temple of Jerusalem.

Long ago, Judea was ruled by the Syrian

king Antiochus, who said that Jews should give up worshipping Yahweh and worship the Greek gods instead. The Jews didn’t like this. They refused to abandon Yahweh. They decided to do something about it. A man named Judah Maccabee got a group of people together to fight back. These people got more people to join, and they soon had an army. For three years, the Jews battled the Syrians for control of Judea. Finally, the Jews won. They cleaned the Temple of Jerusalem, removing all Greek symbols and restoring the Jewish symbols. The job was finished on the 25th day of the month of Kislev. To help celebrate, Judah and his followers lit an oil lamp. The supply of oil was very low, but this lamp stayed lit for eight days.

To honor this extraordinary event, Jews today celebrate the Eight Days of Hanukah and call it the “Festival of Lights.” They light a special eight-candle device called a menorah. Today, families, friends and loved ones give each other gifts, make special foods, have special dinners and remember their ancestors, who fought to take their temple back.

MESSAGE FROMRABBI JOEL CHAZIN

SAVING ONE LIFE: SAVING MANY, MANY MORE

A section of the Talmud has a short but enduring sentence: Podeh Nefesh Achat, Podeh Olam Moley – If you save a single life, you save an entire world.

Many of us have heard this, but not so many know of the

story of US Airways Flight 1549, flying out of LaGuardia Airfield to Charlotte on a cold winter day on January 15, 2009. Incredibly, shortly after takeoff, the plane actually hit an entire flight of Canadian geese, large creatures with wingspans of over six feet and weighing up to 18 pounds. In seconds, the birds crashed into the plane, completely disabling the engines, making it impossible for Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger to have any thrust or to do more than simply glide the plane – without forward power.

The story is now better known, thanks to the recent movie, “Sully.” Ignoring pleas from ground control to try to head for the nearest airport, Sullenberger glided the huge airbus safely onto the waters of the Hudson River, coursing the west side of Manhattan, miraculously saving all 155 lives on board.

In an instant, Sully became a hero to the passengers who are his forever grateful friends. What is less well known is that US Airways, because of the loss of a sixty million dollar plane – with little insurance reimbursement – mercilessly pursued the captain and copilot for failing to return to LaGuardia or another airport, thus saving the plane and the airline’s precious money.

In this effort to change heroism to blame, the pilot, Sully and his mate, Jeff Skiles, stood to lose their reputations, their jobs and their pensions. After several anxious days and torturous hours of testimony, the two’s bravery and split second thinking prevailed and the tawdry efforts of the airline to blame them failed.

The wonderful story of one captain’s amazing bravery and judgment is now better known and the value of the Talmud’s words, “save a single life, save an entire world,” are again re-established and confirmed.

ANNUAL SUSTAINING CAMPAIGN

Your Generosity Makes the Loving Difference!

It has been our privilege to provide innovative and loving care at Montefiore, The Weils, and in the community for 134 years. Today’s Montefiore is an umbrella for numerous services in two locations including long- and short-term care, in-home memory, home healthcare, hospice & palliative care, Maltz Hospice House, assisted living at The Weils and two memory care assisted living communities – The Willensky Residence at Montefiore in Beachwood and The David and Freda Robinson Residence at The Weils in Chagrin Falls.

Your loving support enables each individual to live with dignity, security, and as independently as they are able. Whether a parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend has spent time at Montefiore or The Weils, or received services at home, your generosity allows us to continue our longstanding commitment of caring for your loved ones. Despite our significant growth in community support and outreach, we still face a sizable gap between our reimbursements and the true cost of care. With your support, we can continue to make an impact on the thousands of people we help annually, regardless of ability to pay. Please consider making a gift to our annual campaign – you make the difference for our residents and the whole community!

HELP US MAKE OUR YOUTHAND MEMORY CARE PROGRAM

SHINE BRIGHT!There are many ways to get the word out

about the wonderful work of Montefiore and The Weils. We are always looking for creative ways to engage our community in volunteer work, advocacy, fundraising and the like. With the help of a committee of lay leaders, we have come up with something that does it all – we have created a new event that will debut October 2017, called Shining Star CLE.

Imagine a sold-out audience coming to see Cleveland-area high school students sing on the stage of the prestigious Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square in competition for a $10,000 college scholarship. Students from across a five-county area will have that opportunity in our inaugural Shining Star CLE 2017 solo-singing competition.

You are invited to be a part of this extraordinary event by volunteering, helping us spread the word, donating, attending the event, becoming a sponsor, or even encouraging a high school student to compete. The final competition will take place on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the renowned Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square. Please mark your calendar – you will not want to miss this extraordinary event!

I hope you will take the time to go to www.shiningstarcle.org and learn more about this unique opportunity. All proceeds from this event will support our memory care residents and their families at Montefiore, The Weils and in the community.

I look forward to your involvement. With warmth,

With Dignity and With Class,IN CELEBRATION OF OUR MOTHER

How much our Mother meant to me goes without saying or does it?

Gentle, sweet, caring, loving; always there with the right words,

loving thoughts.

Affection with her touch – a warm kiss, cuddling hug an eye that didn’t miss

any detail.

Holding my hand, embracing me, sharing her wisdom, her inner and

outer strength.

Classy in her resolve to constantly and consistently overcome adversity.

A sense of pride bar none.

Listening and honing in on just the right thing to say or not to.

My best friend, my love, my Mom…

Always with me in my heart, mind and soul. With class and with dignity,

she touched our lives.

In loving memory of our Mom.

Remembering My MotherDOROTHY SCHWARTZ;

THE DOROTHY SCHWARTZ FAMILY FUNDBy Deborah Schwartz Griffin

The Dorothy Schwartz Family Fund will continue our mother’s legacy by remembering how she touched our lives - her children, Montefiore residents and staff, family and friends with her dignity, class, leadership, care for others, gentleness, spirit and inner strength.

An example of leadership; Mom touched others with her subtle humor, always listening, remembering and caring for the aides that cared for her. Mom continued to overcome the adversity of living with a terrible disease, kyphosis – deterioration of the spine – which ultimately caused our Mother’s death, complications from it, by never complaining or showing to the outside world how much pain she must have been in.

This fund will share Mom’s legacy by remembering her essence and setting an example for other families whose loved one, mother, father, perhaps sister, brother, aunt, uncle or friend is a resident of Montefiore too and has their own illness. And, despite that, can overcome this adversity by thinking of others; being true to who you are; loving; and giving back.

My Mother was everything to me. Words can’t express how I feel each day when I think about the entirety of my Mother’s life and how much she meant to me, my siblings, residents and staff of Montefiore where she lived for 18 years, family friends nor can I speak for them. I can only speak for myself.

It’s with this memory and love for my Mom, that I want to recognize, remember her. She serves as an example - her determination, ability to overcome adversity especially in her last few months of living with kyphosis, the deterioration of her spine, affecting how she ate, drank, sat up or tried to, slept – doing the impossible; gives a perspective about how she focused on others – those who cared for her – dressed, fed, bathed her and those who came to visit and us her children.

Mom was always a leader – believing in what was right and fair and instilling that in her children. Sometimes she got caught up in the details. However, it was the details that shone in how she kept her skin, you never knew how old she was. Her clothing, always in fashion looking her best, her hair always well-coiffed, her conversation, always wanting to learn about others and caring about them.

She gave the best hugs; the best

kisses; we held hands with our pinky fingers, her right hand my left when she watched TV from her bed in her room her favorite game shows.

Mom leaves a legacy of how with dignity and class like the poem I’ve written, you never knew what kind of pain she was in, never wanted to talk about it; always wanted to enjoy the food she could from the Chef at Montefiore who made her same and favorite meal every day, chicken leg quarters, sweet potatoes and gravy with chicken and pears.

The special moments of love, seeing it in her eyes, feeding her, watching over her, laughing with her, sharing private thoughts. I wish this and more to all the families at Montefiore who have a parent they love with their life and who passes on – to remember these special seconds, moments, times it will never return in the same way. However, it will be in your heart, mind each day and you can pass this on by helping and caring for others who may need you. Mom I know would have wanted me and us to be happy in heart, in spirit and to live our lives with pride and dignity liked she lived hers by remembering others and by helping and serving others who also need that love in return.

ALL ABOARD FOR OUR END-OF-THE-YEAR CRUISE !

Embark on our cruise-themed end-of-the year celebration!Delicious hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.
