Dear AHS Families,

Our hearts are lighter today than they have been in three months. AHS junior, Hannah “Moose” Thomas-Garner, has reunited with her family in Texas. She ran away three months ago and we worried about her safety. This is the best possible resolution to this incident. While she and her family request privacy as they reunite, KDRV, KOBI and her father’s Facebook page, “BringHannahHome” have a few more details. We are delighted that a second student who ran away the same week, has returned to classes at AHS for second semester. We are grateful to live in a community that does not accept the disappearance of our children. We appreciate all the work of the Ashland Police Department and community groups who kept Moose’s story in the news. She said she saw all the messages online and meant a lot to her.

This spring we plan for the 2015-2016 school year. At student led conferences, students requested courses for next year. We build the master schedule based on the requests we receive from students. Now we’re meeting with 8th grade families to orient them to AHS.

Families across the Rogue Valley have the opportunity in the month of March to register for Open Enrollment and attend Ashland Schools without needing a release from their resident district. Open Enrollment information and registration can be accessed on the District website’s home page. Registration occurs on a Survey Monkey form at this site:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ASD1516APP

A critical part of planning for next year involves hiring teachers; we have openings in the content areas listed below. Please help us recruit exceptional educators by directing them to the employment section on our District website.:

Congratulations to our principal, Ms. Michelle Zundel, who received the National Women in School Leadership Award! The American Association of School Administrators honored her at their national conference in February! She is the first administrator from Oregon to receive the award. Their website states that this award, “pays tribute to the talent, creativity, and vision of outstanding women educational administrators in the nation’s public schools.” In her message to staff, Ms. Zundel said, “We know that no one accomplishes anything alone. Education is a highly collaborative enterprise, so this award is shared by all of you, along with the students, families, and community that support education in Ashland.”

On Saturday, February 21 three AHS students, Sophomore Bryce Ennis, Junior Keely Yant, and Senior Liam Atkins, competed at District Vocal Solo and Ensemble Contest, held this year at Grants Pass High School. The three students sing in choir, and all also study with private voice teachers. Each competitor prepared two contrasting classical songs, including at least one song in Italian, Latin, German or French, which they sang for an adjudicator, who then gave feedback and worked with the singer before giving them a score. This was the first time any of these three students had competed, and all gave beautiful performances while getting tips to help them sing their best. When the results were announced, Liam's score qualified him as first alternate to compete at the State Solo Contest – congratulations Liam! Meanwhile, Bryce and Keely are already planning for next year's competition. Any AHS student (or current 8th-grader) who likes to sing, and wants to know more about the opportunities for competing, or about singing in choir, or about private voice teachers, should come talk to Ms. Foster in the choir room any red day at lunch.
