I get asked LOADS of questions about family photos

Even more than weddings.. “What should I wear?” is not a common

question for a wedding!.. And as a “lifestyle” family portrait

photographer with my own two crazy kids photographer with my own two crazy kids I’ve got a few helpful hints to make your photos filled with love, smiles and fun.. However of course, its only my advice and opinions.. Feel free to completely disregard!

Page 3: Family Portraits FAQ

What should we wear? Melissa’s Photography shoots are casual

and on-location. Something comfortable you can sit, run and jump in. Kids have fun when they are playing & fun looks great in photos.. Make sure the kids are in comfortable Make sure the kids are in comfortable clothes you don’t mind geing a bit dirty

(napisan to the rescue‼).. And just as importantly.. make sure the same ground rules apply to the adults too!

What about my tummy? I hate my tummy‼

Good point.. In our most recent family photos I wore my fave skinny stretchy capri jeans and my baggy jumper.. I could move easily and knew I could sit comfortably without my muffin top sit comfortably without my muffin top

being on display‼If it’s Dad with the tummy.. avoid a tight fiing t-shirt.. go for a looser fit or a casual

collared shirt.

Should we wear matching tops? NO‼‼‼!

The white collared shirt for the whole family looks uncomfortable and

over-stylised for the type of on-location photo we are do here at Melissa’s

Photography.. I advise families to wear Photography.. I advise families to wear “similar but different”..

The Hughes family wore denim with black, white and blue..

No obvious logos, no clashing colours but not too matchy-matchy.

The Granland family looked ever so cool The Granland family looked ever so cool and classic in relaxed denims.

We went “bright and colourful” in our photos cause it was a muted background at the beach and it suited us as a bit of a

crazy family.. Try to ensure the kids are slightly brighter Try to ensure the kids are slightly brighter

than the adults for best results..

Where Shall We Go?

Our photo shoots Our photo shoots are on-location.. And we will nor-mally recommend locations that are suitable. Beach, park, bushland etc. We can also shoot at home or your property. If you NEVER go to the

beach cause you hate sand and don’t swim, let me know, beach photos will look odd on your walls! If we are lucky enough to be on your property, think about 2-3 locations we can use, Mel will advise on the day re: lighting and

backdrops. Trees, paddocks, verandahs, driveways and Trees, paddocks, verandahs, driveways and muddy puddles make great photos! Be prepared to stand, sit and lie down..

Bringing a picnic blanket can be a good idea!

The Silly Session.. Or “My son won’t look at the camera”… So because I’m a So because I’m a parent I’m just going to come and out and say this “Parents can make photo sessions stressful”.. The pres-sure to be ready for an appointed time, an appointed time, for the hair to look nice, to capture a

moment with “just look up and smile” can put a lot of pressure on a lile kid (and their par-ents).. I ask parents to tell their younger kids that we are going to have a “SILLY SESSION with MEL”.. That there will be lots of giggling, playing and having fun (don’t even mention the camera!).. Oen the first part of the shoot won’t even be taking photos.. I’ll be trying to won’t even be taking photos.. I’ll be trying to “make fun” with your kids so they think I’m

silly and very non-threatening.

Most of the shoot will be play with the occasion posed section. For the posed parts, occasion posed section. For the posed parts, ignore your kids, please don’t ask them to look at me or smile. I’ll direct them as I need. If you stay relaxed, laugh and look at the camera it means when I get the kids looking

great.. the adults will too.. I’ll shoot LOADS of photos knowing only I’ll shoot LOADS of photos knowing only about 1 out of 20 works for family photos! Try not to worry.. it might take time but we will get there.. If all else fails I’ll strap on the telephoto lens and retreat into the distance
