IGNITE: “Our Faith, Our Mission,” the capital campaign for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, was relaunched in Fall 2018 and includes two new case elements: An ongoing Disaster Recovery Fund in order to prepare for future disaster assistance ($20 million) and a fund for Rebuilding our Parishes and Schools in Light of Harvey ($20

million). The $150 million goal of the campaign will remain unchanged. The three original case elements will remain as those needs are still present, but have been reduced in order to accommodate the new realities of the Archdiocese: • St. Mary’s Seminary ($30 million) • Catholic Education ($20 million) • Faith Formation ($10 million) The parish share of the campaign remains $50 million. Our parish goal is $1,880,235.36 of which $620,477.67 will be returned to St. Ignatius of Loyola, which is 33% of the funds raised. If we surpass the goal then 67% of the funds will stay in the parish for our use. We are dedicating all returns to the debt reduction on the Gonzaga Center. To learn more about IGNITE.

PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Turn away from sin! Be faithful to the Gospel! Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. With

those words the Church has ushered in the Season of Lent. These words serve as a call to the baptized that it is time to take stock in who we are as Christians. Our lives get very complicated and often when that happens, we tend to the greasy wheel that squeaks the loudest. Because God is always present to us and because we know of God’s infinite love for us, many times we put God down on the priority list; God never squeaks at us! However, we hear in the Scriptures during the Lenten season to choose life over death; choose God over the world; choose grace rather than sin. My friends, the readings throughout the season of Lent are God’s way of becoming the squeaky wheel of our lives. God IS understanding, but Scripture tells us that God is also a jealous God, wanting us to place Him first in our lives. The forty days of Lent provide us the opportunity to reflect upon our lives and as last Sun-day’s Gospel called us to do: take stock to make sure our words and actions are in agreement. If your foundation has become like sand, the quarantine of Lent provides the opportunity through alms giving, prayer and fasting to shore up our foundation; to make certain that your house, the place where God dwells within you, is clean, strong and ready once more to endure the pressures of life. Through the penance of Lent, we will arrive at Easter to renew our baptis-mal promises. Once more, having turned away from sin and by being faithful to the Gospel, we will make the promis-es to reject Satan, his empty promises, the glamour of evil and live as a child of God filled with the Holy Spirit.

Let us also remember that Lent is not just about “me” and “my” deeper conversion. Rather, it is also about us as a community of faith. We fast in support of one another; we give alms to assist the hungry and needy; we pray for one another’s journey through Lent and life. The individual members of the community grow stronger in the bonds that bind us together. For we were baptized into the Body of Christ, all of us members of the same Body bound to-gether by Christ Himself. Through our Lenten practices we grow stronger so that the renewal of our commitment to-gether will also be strengthened. There are numerous possibilities for you to enter the discipline of Lent. In addition to Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday, Stations of the Cross on Friday, K of C Lenten dinners on Friday, operation Rice Bowl, you may choose to stand for the dignity of life on Fridays at Planned Parenthood.

While the Season of Lent is a time of renewal for the baptized, it is also a time of enlightenment for those journeying to the sacraments of initiation. The catechumens are being sent to the Bishop today so that they may be called to the sacraments that will bring them new life: Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Once they have been chosen, they will become known as “the Elect” and will come before the community three times (the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent) asking for our prayers as they near the waters of life. We will pray over them, casting out the power of evil and darkness and asking God to send His Spirit of light into them. The journey of the Elect is depicted in the New Testament painting near the baptismal font. Each vignette around the crucified Lord is a depiction of those Lenten Gospels that prepare the Elect for baptism. Let us include them in our prayer during this Lenten sea-son that God may fill them with light, hope and peace. Part of the Lenten Season is the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Once more, we will join with Prince of Peace and St. Anne’s Parishes in our Lenten Penance service on this Tuesday, March 3rd. If you haven’t been to Confession in a while, now is the time. This joint celebration is a way to gather numerous priests in one place. Mark your calendars now, prepare through an examination of conscious and celebrate God’s forgiveness for you found in the life, death and resurrection of His only Son. Speaking of “seasons”, two Sundays ago we joined with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and kicked off the “season” of the Diocesan Development Fund Appeal. The DSF is an important part of the Archdiocesan’ s way of reaching out to the people in our area; bring to them the presence of Christ. There are many ministries that are bigger than any single parish. In fact, many of the DSF funded ministries in the Archdiocese assist the parishes in fulfilling our obligations as a parish community. As part of the Archdiocese it is important for each of us to contribute to the Cardinal’s annual appeal. If you have not received the information in the mail, we have envelopes available for you in the narthex. You may donate as a one-time donation or make a pledge to be paid out over ten months. Through DSF you allow the voice of Christ to be heard, bringing His message of peace, love, compassion and forgiveness. The DSF video is located on our home page. Listen and watch Fr. Justin explain the journey he has made which was possible partly through DSF. Blessings and peace and a Lenten conversion,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING

Sunday, Mar 01, 2020 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT Count me in A fresh supply of blood keeps the body nourished, just as children add a new chapter to the story of every family. In the same way, our nation’s vitality has always been renewed by the welcoming of immigrants. The church likewise depends on making the way of Jesus attractive to new members. Today we celebrate those entering our church community through the Rite of Election. As they sign their names in the Book of Election, we might ask: What are we doing to keep the Body of Christ alive and well?

TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11 (22). “How much more did the grace of God . . . overflow for the many.”

Monday, Mar 02, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY Heaven all the way Today’s gospel raises the specter of “eternal punishment,” better known as hell. In popular imagination, hell is a fiery place of suffering that a punishing God sends people to. Not so fast, say today’s Catholic theologians, including the last three popes. God is not a torturer. Hell is not so much a physical place but a separation from God chosen by humans. “It is heaven all the way to heaven,” declared Saint Catherine of Siena. To which Father Richard Rohr, O.F.M. adds, “It’s hell all the way to hell.” Today choose heaven.

TODAY'S READINGS: Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18; Matthew 25:31-46 (224). “‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

Tuesday, Mar 03, 2020 MEMORIAL OF KATHARINE DREXEL, VIRGIN Stand for equality The first American-born U.S. saint, Katharine Drexel was exactly what the country needed. Born into wealth and privilege in 1858, she learned about charity from her parents and took an interest in serving Native Americans and African Americans, who she saw were unjustly excluded from the American dream. Of all the great things she did, perhaps her biggest accomplishment was the founding of Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic university in the United States for African Americans. Look to her and help everyone get an equal chance.

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 55:10-11; Matthew 6:7-15 (225). “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Wednesday, Mar 04, 2020 MEMORIAL OF CASIMIR Let’s be the royal we It’s that day of the year when you can joke about the date also being a direct order—to “march forth.” But under whose authority? And for what purpose? In biblical times, of course, it was at the behest of a powerful king or other sovereign. But what about us? If we were baptized as children in the Catholic rite that anoints us “priest, prophet, and king” along with Jesus, we can look to someone such as Saint Casimir. Like this beloved prince of Poland in the 1400s, we act like a sovereign whenever we use our resources for good and influence those

under our direction—be they children, students, coworkers, or fellow citizens—to do the same.

TODAY'S READINGS: Jonah 3:1-10; Luke 11:29-32 (226). “When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne.”

Thursday, Mar 05, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY Let the body guide you Prayer takes many forms—mental, verbal, visual, and physical. We speak, sing, reflect silently, stand, kneel, clasp our hands together. One time-honored Catholic tradition that is rarely seen—except perhaps on Good Friday or at ordinations and monastic professions—is prostration, the act of lying facedown on the ground. It symbolizes profound adoration, humility, or sorrow before God, and also expresses the “earthy” connection between God, humanity, and all creation. We “shorten” this prayer form when we bow our heads. As you enter into your own prayer, consider how bowing your head or lying prostrate might assist you in connecting more fully or in a different way with God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Matthew 7:7-12 (227). “Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish, had recourse to the LORD. She lay prostrate upon the ground.”

Friday, Mar 06, 2020 LENTEN WEEKDAY; DAY OF ABSTINENCE Be a little more careful Lent invites us to a conversion of heart; any practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving can be the means of surrendering anger and loving more deeply. How might we do that? Smile at everyone you encounter today. Pray for ourselves and the people (or leaders) with whom we struggle. Ask each morning for the grace to imagine a walk in the shoes of a difficult person. Work to remove the judgment from your heart, and find the courage to mend a broken relationship. As the poet e.e. cummings put it, “be of love (a little) / More careful / Than of everything.”

TODAY'S READINGS: Ezekiel 18:21-28; Matthew 5:20-26 (228). “Go first to be reconciled with your brother.”

Saturday, Mar 07, 2020 MEMORIAL OF PERPETUA AND FELICITY, MARTYRS Courage can be costly Questions of conscience tend to get overlooked in the daily demands of work and family. But as totalitarian regimes around the world proliferate, some may face dilemmas similar to that of Perpetua and her servant Felicity. Both martyrs chose fidelity to Christ despite—or because of—their obligations as new mothers. Franz Jagerstatter, centuries later, in fidelity to his Catholic faith and love for his three daughters, refused a loyalty oath to Hitler and was beheaded. The sun rises on evil and good. But death does not have the last word. So risk speaking the truth.

TODAY'S READINGS: Deuteronomy 26:16-19; Matthew 5:43-48 (229). “For [God] makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good.”

GUIDELINES FOR LENTEN OBSERVANCES

Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Good Friday (April 10) is a day of fast and abstinence.

Fasting binds all persons ages 18-59 unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.

Abstinence binds all persons who are 14 or older, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but failure to do so is not regarded as sinful. However, pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.

Lent is a penitential season and as such religious practice such as daily Mass, reception of the Sacrament of Penance, the devotion of the Stations of the Cross and other forms of daily prayer

and reflection, works of charity and justice, and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged.

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE The assembly is now invited to make an examination of conscience. This can be done in silence or by using the examination below. Two readers might alternate. Allow a brief period of silence between each question or phrase. Presider: The following examination of conscience is based upon the Confiteor. Please reflect quietly as each part is read. I CONFESS TO ALMIGHTY GOD

Do I sincerely want to be set free from sin and turn again to God? Do I seek a deeper relationship with God in this sacrament of reconciliation?

AND TO YOU MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Do I have a genuine love for my family and friends, neighbors and co-workers, or fellow students? Have I contributed to the well being and happiness of others at home? Am I aware of my global relationship to those suffering and dying in other parts of the world? Am I committed to seek peace and promote justice for every person?

THAT I HAVE SINNED THROUGH MY OWN FAULT

Do I blame others for my wrongdoing or for the misfortune that befalls me? Do I accept responsibility for the commitments I have made to others – my spouse? my parents? my children? my

parish? Do I accept that society’s evils are within my power to change?

IN MY THOUGHT AND IN MY WORDS

Have ever harbored ill thoughts against another person? Have my addictions affected my judgment or behavior? Have my fears or prejudices prevented me from speaking out on behalf of the poor, the unborn, or people of other

races? Have my words caused others hurt? Has my silence caused others harm?

IN WHAT I HAVE DONE

Do I seek to be the center of attention? Have I imposed my will on others without respecting their needs or free-doms?

Am I focused on my needs to the detriment of the needs of others? Am I obsessed with having the perfect body, making more money, or having the latest technology? Do I need to be in control of all people and all situations? Do I work more than is healthy for my mind or body?

IN WHAT I HAVE FAILED TO DO

Have I neglected by responsibilities to my family? Have I neglected my health? Have I neglected my prayer life? Do I use the earth’s resources wisely?

AND I ASK BLESSED MARY, EVER VIRGIN AND ALL THE SAINTS

Do I appreciate the great gift of the Eucharist? Do I worship with my Community each Sunday? Do I reflect often on what God is calling me to do?

AND YOU MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Am I so independent that I refuse to ask for help or let others assist me? Do I support and defend other members of my family? Do I give others the opportunity to share their gifts and talents? Do I treat those who wait on me or who work with me with the dignity they deserve as fellow human beings?

TO PRAY FOR ME TO THE LORD OUR GOD

Do I promise prayers for people and situations and not follow through? Do I remember to pray for others in my parish, especially for those who are preparing to receive the sacraments?

. . la gracia de Dios.”
