From the Wadena Pioneer Journal 30 Jun 2009Gatchell started first newspaper in Wadenan March 24, 1877, a gentleman by the name of Prince Arthur Gatchell started the first newspaper in Wadena namedThe Tribune. The Duluth Tribune described Gatchell to be about as sprightly as any chap on the Northern Pacificroad.Another Duluth paper described the Tribune as a neat little paper and clean in its appearance. A neat six-column,four-page sheet, well edited.Later that year S.S. Gardner, a local real estate agent, began publishing the Wadena Real Estate Journal which hestated he started as an advertising medium and for his own amusement. However, it was a short-lived publicationbeing suspended before the end of that year. This paper was printed at Brainerd. The subscription rate for one year for the Tribune was $2 in money or two bushels of #1 wheat, 12 pounds of nicegood butter, 13 dozen eggs or 8 bushels of potatoes. On Nov. 16, 1878, came the announcement that after the 25th of this month the paper will be presented as theWadena County Tribune and published at Verndale. The change to be made simply as a business point of viewbecause of the generous and unsolicited proposition extended to us by the wide awake businessmen and citizens ofVerndale. In 1878, a man by the name of Joseph E. Hall and his brother were the owners of the Fargo Argus newspaper. Theysplit and Joseph, along with a man by the name of McClure, came to Wadena and started the Northern PacificFarmer, a weekly newspaper. Hall did not recall the date of the first issue but did vividly recall the production. It beganwith an old Washington hand press which they had picked up in Fargo, and the shop was located in a story-and-a-halfunfinished building, built by contributed labor and material of its citizens on a lot facing the railroad contributed by theNorthern Pacific (probably 23 Aldrich Ave. SE).

During this printing, there were many local spectators and Mr. Hall, at 5-feet, 6-inches, tells of operating the handpress, which he was very familiar with. A young local blacksmith, with some reputation for strength asked if he couldtry pulling the lever to operate the press. In so doing he tried several times before he could operate it and upon thereturn of the lever he was jerked over the frame to the delight of other spectators. The first advertisement placed was an ad for the upcoming Fourth of July celebration in Wadena. It proved quitedifficult because of the lack of materials and type.In 1880, Hall and McClure parted company and Hall took on W. Jay Whipple as a partner. Later that year, GeorgeWhitney, one of the town leaders, purchased Hall's interest and he and Jay Whipple ran the paper until 1883.In 1883, they sold the paper to Amzi H. Bereman and George Wilson still under the name of Northern Pacific Farmer. However in 1886 they changed the name to Wadena County Pioneer. In 1887, on Bereman's death, the paper wassold to the Reynolds brothers, Joseph and B. M. They operated the paper until 1891 when they sold it to Charles C.Eastman.According to Alvah Swindlehurst, a long-time editor up until at least 1913, local newspapers were little more than ajumble of old and almost worthless material, poorly housed and requiring almost super human effort on the part of thepublishers to accomplish the weekly task of issuing their papers. In 1885, Edward H. Love and A. C. Archer, editors of the Bluffton News, moved the paper to Wadena and establishedthe Wadena Tribune. A few years later they sold this to M. L. Vought and the next year he sold to Harold T. Bivans, who in 1897 sold to the Swindlehurst Brothers, William and Alvah. They were an interesting couple, Alvah havingbeen born in Wadena and the paper strongly Democrat differing with their arch Republican rival the Wadena PioneerJournal. Alvah was the son of Joseph Swindlehurst, the first blacksmith in Wadena, graduated in the class of 1891and is said to have had a beautiful tenor singing voice. He married a local girl, Jennie Beach, and in 1905 with theconsolidation of papers he became editor of the Pioneer Journal, a position he held until 1913 when he left Wadena tobecome the U.S. Land Agent at Cass Lake. He was succeeded by Harald Boen as editor. Over the years he andBoen became good friends. The Swindlehurst brothers were very positive in their beliefs and judgments. For some reason they took a dislike tothe Wadena mayor, Robert F. C. Iltis, a local druggist.

They accused him, in his office as mayor, of being in favor of the establishment and maintenance of houses of ill famein this city, that he fostered them with a tender solicitude and that he was a frequent and favored visitor to some ofthese places. As proof, Editor Swindlehurst had as a star witness, a poor fallen woman, who at one time conducted ahouse of ill repute in this city and upon complaint of citizens Mayor Iltis ordered her and the occupants of anotherhouse out of the city last spring. Anyway, the jury ruled in favor of Iltis and he was awarded $1. Mike Daly of Perhamwas the defense attorney and P. V. Coppernoll of Wadena worked for Iltis. Bear in mind that the above appeared inthe rival newspaper, the Pioneer Journal. Headline in the Tribune: "Iltis wins libel trial awarded $1. Big deal." In 1903,Dr. Babcock who was running for state representative, determined that he needed a newspaper to further his causeand purchased the Tribune from the Swindlehursts for $4,000. He hired William Verity, a well- known editor, to run thepaper for him. In 1905, they sold out to the Pioneer Journal. This whole affair becomes a little jumbled when Albert S. McMillan moved from Verndale to start the Wadena Journal(215 Jefferson South). In 1897, he sold this to Charles C. Eastman and C. V. Sayles, owners of the Wadena CountyPioneer (118 Jefferson South). These gentlemen combined the two papers forming the Wadena Pioneer Journal -- thenewspaper we know today (209 ½ Jefferson, 314 Jefferson South in 2009).From this time forward the Pioneer Journal dominated the newspaper scene but over the years there were othercompetitors which were taken over by the Pioneer Journal.

From Descendant Gary: Re: CHRISTOPHER.

I RECALL MY GRANDFATHER TELLING ME THAT HIS G-F (ROBERT) HAD GONE TO USA WITH HIS BROTHERAND THEIR FAMILIES, AND THAT THEY’D HAD A FALLING OUT AND ROBERT BROUGHT HIS FAMILY BACKTO ENGLAND. THAT ROBERT IS NOT ON THE 1871 CENSUS, WHILST MARY ANN AND CHRISTOPHER ARE,SUGGESTS THAT THIS WAS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE!

IT MAY BE WORTH NOTING THAT CHRISTOPHER, HIS BROTHER, IS ALSO MISSING FROM THE 1871CENSUS ALONG WITH HIS WIFE, ANN. IT MAY BE THAT ROBERT WENT TO USA WITH CHRIS AND ANN.WHEN, I DON’T KNOW, AS I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANY RECORD OF ROBERT ENTERING USA. WIFEAND SON, YES! HIM, NO.

JUST LIKE ROBERT, CHRIS REAPPEARS ON UK CENSUS IN 1881, AS A WIDOWER. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLETO FIND A RECORD OF ANN’S DEATH.

Jg: Christopher seems to have been a little economical with the truth when filling in USAdocuments - he was born in Accrington!!

From Keith Atkinson:Yes, I have it on good authority from the Harris Museum that this is the same Thomas Swindlehurst (the reformeddrunkard). I agree, there is a marked difference in his appearance and I questioned this myself when I first saw theportrait and I showed my other pictures to the Keeper of Art at the Harris. You have to remember that he is youngeron this one and the skill of the artists in capturing a likeness is not known – artistic licence and all that. He hasdefinitely been spruced up for his portrait, rather than his normal ragged appearance. If you look carefully at thenewspaper he has on the desk in the painting, it is a copy of the Temperance Advocate. I wondered, at first, if it mayhave been of his son Thomas Hill but the date is not consistent with that, but is for Thomas senior. I also have apicture of a second portrait of his wife Sarah (Nelson) but this is a later date and she is an older lady – this has not bethrough any conservation and I’m afraid she will continue to live off-show in the basement of the Harris. I haveattached this for you, I have also attached another Thomas sketch I have uncovered. The provenance of these oil paintings is that they were donated to the Harris Museum in 1938 by Rose and PaulLamartine Yates. This date was just prior to the Temperance Hall in Preston being demolished and it may have beenrescued from there. I believe it was this portrait that is referred to in ”Reminiscences of the Preston Cockpit & The OldTeetotallers” – Thomas Walmsley (1892) where he says, of Thomas … “Swindlehurst, the best likeness of whom isthe one in the Temperance Hall, was a man of grand physique – Well built, well proportioned.”. Paul Lamartine Yatesis really a Swindlehurst, (son of Thomas Lamartine Swindlehurst - who became Thomas Lamartine Yates - and RoseLamartine Yates (a famous suffragette) but those are stories in themselves! Thanks to everyone for their help with the will for Thomas Hill Swindlehurst – I have sent off my request by post for acopy.Paul Lamartine Yates, who together with his mother Rose donated the oil paintings, was Thomas’ great-grandson.Starting with Thomas and Sarah Swindlehurst, who are the subjects of the paintings: They had many children, most ofwhom survived into adulthood. I am descended from their tenth child, Samuel, but the inheritance of these paintings, for some reason, passed down the line of their eighth child, William Swindlehurst.William’s career was in property development, which began in Preston as Secretary of the Chartist Land Company, and continued when he moved to Camberwell in London. He was, first the Manager, and then Company Secretary, forthe Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company, a philanthropic model dwellings company. In 1877, during the

development of the Queens Park Estate (origins of QPR FC), William, together with two colleagues were arrested, tried and convicted for defrauding £9,312 (approximately £650 thousand today) from the project. William wassentenced, at the Old Bailey, to eighteen months in prison. You can read the full account of the case at the Old Baileyat:http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18771022-761&div=t18771022-761William was married and had four adult sons at the time of his imprisonment. His eldest was Thomas LamartineSwindlehurst. Thomas started his career as an engineer, but must have started studying law during the 1870s. Ataround the time of his father’s conviction, he was a qualified Solicitor, and these events must have been professionallyembarrassing for him.It appears that the whole family, (except perhaps James Nelson Swindlehurst), changed their surname to Yates (thesignificance of this name is yet to be discovered – it was not his mother’s maiden name as one might expect). Thomasmust have decided to use his middle name also as a surname and became known as Tom Lamartine Yates. In 1900, Tom married Rose Emma Janau, (his second wife - having been previously widowed), who was 26 years hisjunior. Rose (whose parents were French), met Tom at a cycling club and then studied law with him so that she couldhelp him with his practice. It is possible that through this work she became aware of the prejudice and injustice of thelaw as it treated her fellow women. Tom was in sympathy with Rose’s ideas and supported her in all her activities.Their only child, Paul, was born on 19th June 1908.Rose developed into a woman of fiery and independent spirit and went on to become a very prominent figure in theSuffragette movement. Rose was imprisoned on 24th February 1909 for one month, when Paul was just eight monthsold, for being a member of the deputation to Prime Minister Asquith. Also in 1909, she joined the committee of theWimbledon branch of the Women's Social & Political Union (WSPU), becoming its treasurer and organising secretaryin 1910.Tom represented many of the Suffragettes in the courts, and represented the family of Emily Wilding Davison, (whofamously threw herself under the King’s horse at the 1913 Derby), at her inquest. Incidentally, Tom was also hired byFrank Woolworth to write the Memorandum and Articles of Association needed to apply to become a British Companyunder the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908, to enable him to open his F W Woolworth shops in the UK.Paul grew up to become a brilliant applied economic analyst, working all over the world in British Embassies and forthe Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. From the age of 95 to 97, he was busy writing a very large autobiography dealing with every aspect of his life andwork. It has not, as yet, found a publisher. He was still alive and living in France with his 3rd wife, to celebrate his 100th

birthday in 2008, but it is not known if he is still alive today.-------------------------------------------EXTRAS
