Arctic Monkeys - AM

This album cover is a great example of a

band becoming so popular and

successful that they do not need to have

a big design or image of the band on the

cover. The Arctic Monkeys have takencontrol of the British Rock scene with

there very mainstream sound. If you

were to show this design to any

teenager or young adult (13-25) they

most likely will know the design and

band. The simple monochrome design isintended to represent sound waves and

the album name AM.

The BeatlesAbbey Road

This is one of the most famous album covers

Of all time. The Beatles took over the entire

World with their sound in the 60s. there

influence in music has never been matched.

This album cover is another example of the

band being shown in the album. It make the

audience and fans learn their faces. The

street that they used has since become

world famous. Many other famous people

have walked across the crossing just

because it is such a stable in musical art

history.

BlurThis album cover is famous. The faces were

designed by an artist called Julian Opie. Thisalbum is just as famous because of the

music, however is was the artwork witch

created the hype and spread of the album.

Showing each band member in this cartoon

way helped there faces become known, but

also having a very clever twist on the generalconvention of having a photo of the band

members. The style of the cover is take

straight from the Beatles 3rdAlbum Let It

Be, this is because they are attempting to

make people associate the band with the

ultrafamous band from the 60s.

NivanaNevermind

This is another example of an album

cover which is extremely well known

around the world. Nivana was one of

the first Grunge band to come out of

Seattle. Their heavy new rock sound

became very popular. According to

Cobain, he conceived the idea while

watching a television program on

water births with Grohl. It gives the

idea of something as innocent and

pure as a baby becoming

contaminated or corrupt by a simple

piece of paper.

Pink FloydThe Dark Side of the

MoonThe album was originally released in a gatefold LP sleevedesigned by Hipgnosis and George Hardie. Hipgnosis had

designed several of the band's previous albums, with

controversial results; EMI had reacted with confusion when

faced with the cover designs for Atom Heart Mother and

Obscured by Clouds, as they had expected to see traditional

designs which included lettering and words. Designers Storm

Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell were able to ignore such

criticism as they were employed by the band. For The DarkSide of the Moon, Richard Wright instructed them to come

up with something "smarter, neatermore classy. The

prism design was inspired by a photograph that Thorgerson

had seen during a brainstorming session with Powell.

The artwork was created by their associate, George Hardie.

Hipgnosis offered the band a choice of seven designs, but all

four members agreed that the prism was by far the best. Thedesign represents three elements; the band's stage lighting,

the album lyrics, and Richard Wright's request for a "simple

and bold" design.

MuseThe Resistance

Muse is a very well known band

and this album cover fits with their

style of music perfectly. In my

opinion there style is psychedelic

rock and this cover is very colorful,

bold and difficult to determinewhat is happening.

This band was a huge surprise as

they rose to fame across Britain

and America. This album cover is

a good example of showing how

a simple backdrop with the band

members in view creates aninteresting Cover. The members

clothes are an indication to the

style of music and genre of the

band.

Of Monsters and Men

The picture on the front of the

album is a picture that one of the

band members grandfather took

of his friend. The original was

black and white; colour wasadded. This album cover is not a

very well known one. But because

its at the seaside on the beach I

get the indication of a folky

acoustic based band. Which is

exactly what their style and genreis.

This is probably Laura Marlings

most well known album. She is a

British folk singer songwriter. The

album deals with "responsibility,

particularly the responsibility of

womanhood.This is show in the cover as it is a

single picture of Laura altered in

an artistic way.

Lorde is a singer/songwriter who rose to famevery quickly after her music video of the song

Royals went viral on YouTube (see below).

Her style has been compared to Lana Del Ray

and Sky Ferreira.
