FAMOUS PEOPLE LESSON 3:
William Caxton and
Tim Berners-Lee
Balestra School Workshops proudly presents ..
WILLIAM CAXTON
William Caxton was born in
England in 1415, at a time when
people wanted to know more and
more information about the world around them.
WILLIAM CAXTON
Many people wanted to learn
to read but books cost a lot
of money because every one had to be
copied by hand.
WILLIAM CAXTON
In the early 1470s, Caxton learned how to
print books using a printing press, and in 1476 he
brought this new invention to
England.
WILLIAM CAXTON
This meant that books could be produced more quickly for less money and this helped a lot of
people learn to read and improve their
lives!
WILLIAM CAXTON
By the end of his life in 1492,
William Caxton had achieved a wonderful thing in making books
available to millions of people.
SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS WILLIAM CAXTON FAMOUS?
He was the first English person to
work as a printer and the first to introduce a
printing press into England which made books available for many more people
than before.
INTERESTING FACTS
William Caxton died in 1492, the year that Christopher Columbus sailed to America.
He didn’t invent the press, but he was the one who made it popular.
TIM BERNERS-LEE
In 1989 he was working at a place
called CERN, which is a large
underground science lab
dedicated to finding out how atoms work.
TIM BERNERS-LEE
He solved this problem by designing a way for computers to talk to each other using a
special method called ‘HTTP’. A lot of the
work had already been done but Tim was the
person who finally connected it all together.
He invented the internet! The most amazing
communications invention since the
printing press!
SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS TIM BERNERS-LEE FAMOUS?
INTERESTING FACTS
Tim became Sir Tim when he was knighted by the Queen in 2005.
He featured in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics!
