Common Core Standards• Adopted in August 2010• Led by the Council of Chief State School
Officers and National Governors Association
• State directed initiative• Drafting process included teachers and
content experts from across the country• Focus on college and career readiness• Math and English Language Arts
English-Language ArtsStandards are:
(1) research and evidence based,
(2) aligned with college and work expectations,
(3) rigorous,
(4) internationally benchmarked, and
(5) intended to be a living work: as new and better evidence emerges, the Standards will be revised accordingly
A particular standard was included in the document only when the best available evidence indicated that its mastery was considered essential for college and career readiness in a twenty-first-century, globally competitive society.
ELA Standards Cont.• 4 Strands: Reading, Writing, Language,
Listening/Speaking• College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards for
12th grade were developed first as “anchor standards”
• “Anchor Standards” then serve as the basis for the development of specific grade level standards
Math Standards• built on progressions• narrative documents describing the progression
of a topic across a number of grade levels• informed both by research on children's cognitive
development and by the logical structure of mathematics
• the progressions were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards
Math Standards Cont.• Standards for Mathematical Practice describe the
attributes of mathematically proficient students • As students move through the grade levels, the
math practices stay the same….much like the anchor standards for ELA
• The 8 Practices include both processes and proficiencies with longstanding importance in math education
SMARTER Balanced• Assessment system in use by 2014-2015• Summative: adaptive, benchmarked to
college and career readiness• Interim: flexible, teacher developed• Formative tools and practices: online
resources and modules• Question types will include selected
