“FantaSea Resorts employees changed my mind about A.C.”

Opinion Section - Press of Atlantic City

Monday, November 24, 2014

I wrote the Oct. 7 letter, “Timeshare sales thugs hurt Atlantic City image,” about the less-than-favorable treatment my wife and I experienced at a timeshare presentation in Atlantic City. I wrote that we wouldn’t be back, and I meant it.

Now I am writing about how wrong I was. Howard Alter and Kelley Goeke from FantaSea Resorts read my letter and were determined to change my feelings about Atlantic City.

My wife and I were invited back to stay in the beautiful Flagship Resort, and Howard and Kelley took their weekend to personally change our view of how much A.C. values each person who visits their city.

Though A.C. has suffered some setbacks lately, with people like Howard and Kelley, who genuinely care about every visitor’s experience, these setbacks will only be bumps, not a decline. We were treated so wonderfully that, I am humbled to say, we definitely will be coming back.

Thank you, Howard, Kelley and FantaSea Resorts, for caring about one couple’s experience in A.C.

What’s old is new again at Atlantic Palace time-share condos in Atlantic City

by Martin DeAngelis

Saturday, February 14, 2015

The Atlantic Palace has had a place in the striking skyline since 1987. But even if the time-share condo tower has contributed an irregularly shaped, 31-story chunk to the public view of the city for these past 28 years, the Atlantic Palace hasn’t made made enough use of its own spectacular, Boardwalk-front views, as the building’s new owners see it. And those new owners should know. FantaSea Resorts, a time-share company, also is the old owner of the Atlantic Palace. Atlantic City-based FantaSea sold the building to Bluegreen Corp. in 2008 and bought that Florida vacation company in a deal that closed Jan. 1. Even while Bluegreen ran the show, FantaSea kept a block of suites for its own time-share members, said Atlantic Palace’s general manager, Michael Anderson.

Now that FantaSea has moved all the way back into the Atlantic Palace, the company plans to make better use of that view — and to generally upgrade and update the public amenities, Anderson added.

He said one major step in that process will be to add a “large, luxurious spa” — although that’s in planning stages so early the company doesn’t have architect’s drawings yet. Another planned addition is a family fun center, including a game room, arcade and more ways to entertain kids. FantaSea also wants to build a movie theater for guests, Anderson said.

For a more active crowd, there’s a “fantastic workout facility” on the drawing board, the GM said. The Atlantic Palace already has a working fitness center. The owners are proud of one of the building’s highlights, a swimming pool that overlooks the beach and ocean from three floors up on that skyline at New York Avenue, on a bend in the Boardwalk between The Pier at Caesars and Central Pier.

“It’s a great location that really hasn’t been taken advantage of,” said Nadya Rivera, a FantaSea spokeswoman who showed the 292-unit building that caters to both time-share owners and guests who just use it as a hotel.

Looking out the windows of an oceanfront suite on the 30th floor, she added that the company’s overall goals for its new/old property will emphasize “a celebration of this view.” But all those coming upgrades are a big part of the package.

“We feel that the new spa can only contribute to our efforts,” Rivera said.

Not every room in the Atlantic Palace has that straight-shot view out at the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the odd shape — it’s sort of a blunt arrowhead, with two long sides tapering in toward the beach — the great majority do, Anderson said.

“There are some city views,” he acknowledged — although given Atlantic City’s water-rich geography, those back-of-the-building city views include views of the bays that surround the town. They could be the best spots to enjoy sunset cocktails.

Speaking of which, the Atlantic Palace’s nearby neighbors include one of Atlantic City’s most popular cultural institutions, the Irish Pub. Even closer is an actual Boardwalk museum (of sorts). Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is just a few steps away from Atlantic Palace’s door to the boards.

FantaSea, the corporate owner, also owns the Flagship resort, just off the Boardwalk and Absecon Inlet at Maine Avenue, and LaSammana, off the beach in Brigantine. It claims 45,000 members and says it’s the biggest noncasino hospitality provider in Atlantic City. And one more plan FantaSea has for the Atlantic Palace is to change that longtime view of the building as it stands on the skyline. Anderson, a veteran of Atlantic City’s hospitality business, points out that most of the tall buildings on that skyline have their names lit up in bright, red letters — apparently to catch the maximum amount of eyeballs.

To set itself apart in that tangle of towers, the company is waiting to pull down the old, red sign from the top of the building and put up its name in “brilliant, brilliant blue” letters, in Anderson’s description. The new sign will brand the building as “FantaSea Resorts at Atlantic Palace.”

While Bluegreen was running the property, that company renovated many of the suites, which run from studios to two-bedrooms. FantaSea also did the same to some of the time-shares it maintained for its members. By Anderson’s estimate, more than half the Atlantic Palace’s units have been upgraded in the past four years. The company has no plan to redo more individual units this year, he said.

Motorcycle club hosts event for kids to close out Autism Awareness Month

by Lucia C. Drake

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

All the smiles had George Crouch choked up during the fourth annual Autism Fun Day at Dolphin Field in Atlantic City last Friday. “This is one of my most rewarding days of the year,” said Crouch, event coordinator for the Gentlemen of the Shore Motorcycle Club, which started the activity in 2012 as a way to give back to the community. “You know, when you see these kids smiling and having fun, that is all that matters.”

More than 500 special needs students from the Atlantic City and the surrounding school districts enjoyed a day of food, fun and activities geared just for them, and it was all for free. The Fun Day event for students is always held the last Friday in April, to close out the observance of Autism Awareness Month. “What we do is give special needs kids a day to enjoy all to themselves. The joy on the faces of these students, as well as their teachers, parents and school administrators, is priceless,” said Crouch, who helped out along with fellow club members and other volunteers.

There was plenty of food and snack treats for all. Students, teachers, support staff and volunteers were all treated to lunch and could eat all the cotton candy, popcorn and water ice they wanted.

The event included visits from the Atlantic City Fire Department, which gave out coloring books and hats, and the Atlantic City Police Department, which had K-9 demonstrations. Kids were able to play on game systems, jump about in bouncy houses, have their faces painted, blow bubbles and fly kites. “Anything to keep these little faces happy,” said Crouch. One of the highlights for the kids was being able to have their picture taken while sitting on top of a decked-out, high-performance Can-Am Spyder three-wheeler (stationary, of course).

Organizers stressed that the event would not be nearly as successful without the support of generous donors who helped make it possible. “Everything here is free for the kids, and that wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t get an outpouring of donations from the community. We are very grateful,” said Crouch. He cited FantaSea Resorts, the Reliance Medical Group, the city administration and the school district’s board of education as being particularly supportive of the event.

In addition, Gary’s Restaurant in Pleasantville donated food, Atlantic City Sportswear donated T-shirts to all the kids, PepsiCo donated beverages and Atlantic County Rentals (ACR) provided steep discounts on bouncy houses, generators and popcorn, cotton candy and snowcone machines, he said.

The Gentlemen of the Shore Motorcycle Club was established about 11 years ago with the goal of having positive involvement in the community. The Autism Fun Day is one of the many outreach programs it conducts throughout the year, organizers said. The event has become so successful that club members are helping motorcycle groups from other districts organize their own autism awareness programs.

An EPIC event in Atlantic City for business owners

by Sekia Mangum

Monday, May 4, 2015

If you’re looking to start or expand your business, now’s your chance. The Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship Corporation, in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Small Business Development Centers, is roaming New Jersey, hosting its EPIC business seminars, and will make a stop in Atlantic City 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Flagship Resort.

EPIC – which stands for Empowered, Prepared, Informed and Competitive – was a seminar designed to show entrepreneurs how to avoid economic struggles by having a strong business plan, which we all know is a vital part of starting a business. When you don’t have a plan, you’re really just taking a short cut and planning in your head – and good for you if you can do it – but as a business grows, it has to be organized, planned out and communicated with others. That’s why WCEC provides the tools for women to successfully own, operate and, perhaps most important, grow their small businesses in their communities. But the EPIC tours can really be beneficial to anyone venturing into the business world. Throughout the year, they hold about 150 seminars for more than 5,000 participants.

This particular half-day, networking event will feature Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian as keynote speaker. The seminar will begin with a light breakfast as guests are checking in and topics include marketing, customer service and preparing your business plan, the latter of which will also be held in Spanish. Participants will then get the chance to mingle with other business professionals and local CEOs.

According to WCEC’s Program Manager Steve Maiorano, preparing the business plan might be the most important lecture on the agenda, as good management requires setting specific objectives, tracking and following up. “I’m surprised at how many existing businesses manage without a plan. You can’t establish what’s supposed to happen by winging it,” Maiorano says.

The second session will cover other crucial topics in business including the obvious one –how to start your small business – along with strategic ways to perform your plan and tackling social media. “Social media can be a powerful tool for new business owners if properly used. But small business owners need to understand that there is no ‘one size fits all’ silver bullet approach to social media,” Maiorano says. “Every business is different and each social media platform presents opportunities and challenges, so it is important to have a social media plan that is focused, manageable and in line with your business goals.”

Maiorano also mentioned that one of the biggest factors in entrepreneurship is risk taking. After investing your money and time into something you’re passionate about, the real test comes when it’s time to sell your product, gain clientele and handle unforeseen risks. During each session, instructors will help attendees understand and better prepare for risks such as cyber attacks, weather volatility and power outages.

“We know that New Jersey has highly motivated entrepreneurs who can turn their ideas and energy into starting their businesses and provide jobs for others,” says Rana Shanawani, executive director of WCEC.

“We are excited to bring this event to Atlantic City to serve business owners who will strengthen our economy.”

AC’s Hidden Gem Revealed The transformation of the Blue Water Grille has begun

by Alyson Boxman Levine

June 2015

Odds are you’ve passed the Flagship Resort countless times while driving on North Maine Avenue in Atlantic City, innocently unaware of the mouth-watering happenings on the seventh floor. While the Blue Water Grille is not a new restaurant, the changes that have recently been occurring there are undoubtedly cutting-edge and deliciously on-trend.

“I was hired at FantaSea Resorts to execute the developer, Mr. Bruce Kaye’s vision of elevating the standard of the Blue Water Grille into a property and product second to none,” said Yianni Papaspanos, Director, Food and Beverage, Blue Water Grille. “We offer nothing less than the best food, the best drinks, and the best dining experience.”

Papaspanos and Executive Chef A. Juliano Cannuscio are currently building a talented team to help execute the vision of creating a restaurant that is second to none. The pair is expertly blending experience, knowledge, creativity, and passion to create the new restaurant.

“We are revamping the restaurant and taking it to the next level,” revealed Papaspanos. “We’ve changed the menu, upgraded the quality of ingredients, and stepped up the service to elevate the restaurant to the next level.”

And these two talented men behind all the excitement possess the expertise to make it all happen seamlessly. Born in Greece — in an idyllic Greek home by a beautiful lake hidden between vineyards — Papaspanos began traveling to the United States at an early age, and would spend his summers working at his uncle’s restaurant in Wildwood. His first restaurant job was at the age of 12 and, though he revealed his uncle was tough on him, that toughness essentially helped mold him for the better. A veteran of the hospitality industry for 22 years, Yianni is proud to have worked with Chef Gus Papaspanos at Adam’s Restaurant in Wildwood, Chef Lisa Savage at Sage restaurant in Ventnor, Chef Fabian Ludwig and Mercedes Rojas in Revel, and Chef Alain Allegretti and Paolo Dorigato of Azure at the former Revel.

With dinner entrees like Grilled Branzino and Surf and Turf, Chef A. Juliano Cannuscio expertly prepares American Mediterranean cuisine with Italian influences for Blue Water Grille guests. Cannuscio is a third generation family member in the restaurant business; his extended family own and operate JoJo’s restaurants, with the Galloway Township location belonging to his parents.

“My parents provided me with a solid foundation in good Italian food,” revealed Cannuscio, and his culinary talents got him hired as a line supervisor at Seaview Marriott in Galloway Township and later as a sous chef at Forneletto at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City. He opened Lugo Cucina e Vino at the former Revel, and is a graduate of Atlantic Cape Community’s College of Culinary Arts in Mays Landing.

The Blue Water Grille’s interior boasts dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, providing a dazzling view of the Northeast Inlet, Brigantine Beach, and the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect backdrop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the Blue Water Grille is steadfastly emerging into one of the region’s best places to dine. Their daily Happy Hour, featuring Adrienne’s cocktails, runs from 5 -7 PM at the bar, and includes 50% off appetizers, $4 house drinks and house wine, $2 drafts, and $3 bottle beer.

And, the changes are not stopping with the restaurant. The 32-story resort is investing resources into significant property enhancements that are expected to be completed in Spring 2016. Make a reservation and become part of the enchanting and delectable rebirth happening at the beginning of the famed Atlantic City boardwalk; inside the Blue Water Grille.
