LEITAT Terrassa - Barcelona - Igualada

Page 4: FAQ...Mr. Oriol Alcoba i Malaspina Representative of ACC1Ó Member: Mr. Francesc Astals i Coma Representative of the Universidad Politècnica de Catalunya – UPC Member: Mr. Joan

OriginIn 1906, a group of industrialists concerned about quality, certification and research in the wool textile sector decided to found a supporting association for competitiveness of companies named Acondicionamiento Tarrasense. Those industrialists knew how to anticipate needs for business collective solutions and laid the foundations of the current concept of technology centre.

Over the years and thanks to the work performed, the entity evolved both to the extension of its activities and to the name that is currently identified with the brand known as Leitat.

During these years, our vocation in offering services to companies and entities has remained unchanged, whereas the activities developed, the organization and our internal

work system have changed significantly specializing in different knowledge areas allowing the search for the best technology solutions for companies.

The results obtained lately show that the bet developed by Leitat towards knowledge generation and transfer to the productive fabric is an effective model for economic growth in a fast, efficient and sustainable way, creating at the same time new areas and models for talent development and personal performance for all employees.

ADVANCED MATERIALS (AM)

Research lines:

• Processes of synthesis of polymers and biopolymers, nanoparticles, nanofibres and micro and nanocapsules.

• Formulation of raw materials through pilot processes as composites, nanocomposites and biocomposites extrusion, electrospinning, preparation of inks, coatings and paints, concrete mixture processes and stabilized products.

• Application of new materials by new techniques such as injection, blow moulding, inkjet, screen printing, padding and plasma and sun-gel treatments.

Global and optimized projects for the development of new materials aimed at the main industrial sectors as transport, building, energy, packaging, consumer goods, aeronautics and textile, and focused on 4 great pillars: • Nanotechnology.• Polymers and polymeric composites. • Surface technology. • Inorganic materials of the building sector.

We perform integral projects in the sector of the science of materials covering the whole scale of values and different phases of the productive processes: synthesis phases, formulation of raw materials with pilot tests and realization of technology demonstrators applied to the new materials developed, as well as studies on recyclability and useful life of new materials.

By doing so, we try to help the industry to develop their projects from any stage of the value chain of the materials with the aim of providing knowledge and innovation and creating an industrial network in the field of materials and industries to apply the new products and processes developed.

SAFETY & SUSTAINABILITY (S&S)

Research lines:

• Design activities.• Selection and preparation of materials by factors of

efficiency/security/sustainability. • Toxicology characterization. • Selection of productive processes. • Design of recycling strategy. • Design of diagnosis system.

Technology projects aimed at most of the industrial sectors to show that both the facilities and processes and, mainly the products, are safe and sustainable. Our solutions ensure to the different productive sectors the minimum environmental impact and the mitigation of the risks for the human health.

We develop new methodologies on emission assessment, transport prediction and transformation of new raw materials with great specialization in nanomaterials, along their life cycle, to assess the risk to employees, consumers and impact on environment.

Our research is complemented with the development of new methodologies and in vitro complex cellular models adding value to sectors as security, cosmetics and pharmacy.

We evaluate the environmental impact and realize ecotoxicology studies, monitoring of transport and transformation of the products in the different environmental compartments. The results obtained from these evaluations allow us to add technology value to the consultancy service on regulatory issues, offering support and training on REACH and CLPs, global environmental risk and impact evaluation through risk analysis (RA) and life cycle assessment (LCA).

MFC4Sludge aims to develop, according to participating SME needs, an innovative solution consisting of a MFC coupled to a hydrolytic-acidogenic anaerobic digestion (HA-AD) to treat sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The technologies to be developed herein will not only improve existing sludge treatments in environmental terms (even avoiding sludge disposal) but also in cost-effectiveness terms (generating electricity in the MFC in order to power the sludge treatment). The objective is to develop a reliable, cost-effective and efficient alternative to existing wastewater sludge treatments with minimum environmental impacts and without increasing energy consumption of current wastewater treatment plants.

To that end, MFC4Sludge will take advantage of the potentials of MFC regarding direct conversion of sludge into electricity while operating at ambient temperature with low biomass production and neither requiring gas handling nor aeration. Taking into account the latest state-of-the-art, research activities will be focused on: wastewater sludge pre-treatment using partial anaerobic digestion; MFC system development aimed at improving system efficiency and cost-effectiveness; MFC control strategies design in order to reach an optimal performance; and integration of the different elements which compose the final solution. Given the SME participants’ financial and scientific limitations to conduct the needed research themselves, key European RTD performers, as LEITAT, will be subcontracted within the project in order to transfer their research results to such SMEs.

LEITAT will carry out the works related to the design ofthe architecture of the microbial fuel cell (optimization of the anode and cathode materials) and the maximixation of the energy produced. On the other hand, LEITAT will also realize the characterization of the microbial communities and the properties of the effluents.

NANOFLUX Development of new nanocomposites to minimize the flux lines in injected pieces.

The flux and union lines in injected pieces of thermoplastic materials are an obstacle to obtain complex pieces with uniform and high quality surface aspects. The main objective of the project NANOFLUX consists in studying the applicability of nanotechnology to reduce the visibility of such union marks following three strategies: surface uniformity through the nucleation of polymeric chains with nanomaterials related to PP; high miscibility unions through the optimization of thermal conductivity and of polymers fluidity; and miscibility unions through the optimization of the injections process.

By means of a separated study and following an integrative approach to the three strategies, the project intendeds to obtain a new generation of injected complex metallised pieces where the effects of flux and union lines will be eliminated.LEITAT’s tasks are to support the selection of nanomaterials (NM), the functionalisation of NM, to perform polymeric mixes at laboratory level and the characterization at microscopic level.

STEP-2-SPORT project aims to support the refurbishment of the existing sport buildings through step by step renovation towards Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), contributing to the EU energy objectives. Energy audits and energy performance certification will be performed in pilot sport facilities from 7 different countries (Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria) in order to identify energy improvement opportunities as well as to determine their energy rating. Action Plans for renovation of pilots will be developed, identifying what energy improvement measures should implement each pilot sport building over the next 10 years in order to be a NZEB.

Following the recommendations defined in the action plans, energy improvement measures will be set up during the project duration, and their implementation will be monitored. From the experience obtained and the information compiled, a roadmap will be defined with the aim of achieving NZEB in EU sport buildings in the medium-long term. Without any doubt, in this economic recession period the most important barrier for sport owners is the lack of investment capital to implement full refurbishment towards NZEB. For this reason, innovative business model schemes for renovations, and in particular Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and Energy Performance Contracting will be promoted since they can finance energy saving measures and implement plans to improve energy efficiency in the long term.

LEITAT is the coordinator of the project and carries out the energy audits in sports buildings identified in Spain. LEITAT is responsible for the work package of the roadmap towards energy efficient sports buildings. Grant Agreement: IEE/13/586/SI2.675070 Budget: 1.862.908 € / Total EC: 1.397.181 €

In the development of diagnostic kit, the consortium committed to the development of a rapid and simple test, able to provide a response within 25-30 minutes without heating by stoves, or other laboratory equipment and / or detection. In addition, the kit has the sensitivity and selectivity necessary to confirm the diagnosis or rule out these three diseases. At the technological level, the kit is based on the use of monoclonal antibodies in the format of a lateral flow device (Lateral Flow Device, LFV) with reduced industrial production costs in order to be marketed at a competitive and affordable price.

LEITAT brings expertise in the development of diagnostic monoclonal antibodies and is responsible for the development of specific and selective monoclonal antibodies for each microorganism. It will also perform reactivity analysis and selection of the most sensitive antibody detection system for the sandwich method, which will then be used in the LFD device to be commercialized.

Organic solar cells will open up entirely new markets for photovoltaics. These “plastic solar cells” have several advantages: They are light-weight, mechanically flexible, can be produced in arbitrary colors, and hence allow a customized design for a variety of applications. Moreover, organic solar cells can be produced by printing processes with a low consumption of materials and energy, enabling the inexpensive production of high numbers of solar cells. To make organic photovoltaics ready for the mass market, however, various challenges still have to be mastered. The energy conversion efficiency has to be improved to more than ten percent. Costs of materials synthesis have to be reduced. The life-time of the materials and modules has to be enhanced to more than ten years. To reach these objectives, the international project consortium of MatHero studies environmentally compatible processes for materials synthesis, coating and printing. All novel printable materials are formulated using non-chlorinated solvents.

MatHero covers the complete value chain of organic solar cell fabrication: From the design and synthesis of the polymers used to assemble the solar cells to the fabrication and characterization of the modules to the assessment of stability. The project goal is an environmentally compatible printed organic solar module for off-grid applications. LEITAT main activities into MatHero consist in develop new ecofriendly photovoltaic inks for OPV, reducing the amount of chlorine based solvents. LEITAT, with its background in standardization and testing, participate also in stability studies of new materials and devices developed in MatHero.

OxFloc aims to develop a new one-stage combined flocculation-oxidation process that needs no chemicals because electrolytic production of the reagents (iron catalyst and hydrogen peroxide) takes place in the reactor itself. OxFloc integrate system is capable of degrading and removing harmful substances, both dissolved and suspended, from industrial wastewaters with minimal demand for electrical energy. Not all industrial wastewaters are the same, but many carry a mix of toxic chemicals and/or non-biodegradable components such as hormones, tenside, flame resistants, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and heavy metals. Therefore, OxFloc technology will offer a cutting edge and environmental solution for treating complex industrial effluents that need significant treatment before they can be discharged to a municipal waste water treatment plant.

The project also aims to reduce treatment costs by at least 30% while offering modular installation and application engineering at a price below comparable state-of-art processes. OxFloc system will have a quantified superior environmental benefit, a smaller plant footprint, lower operation costs and enable 100% water recycling as it works without salt-carrying chemicals.

In OxFloc project, LEITAT contributes as RTD performer subcontracted by the 5 SMEs of the consortium, collaborating in the electrochemical generation of Fenton reagents, in the development of a Smart Power Management, as well as leading the LCA workpackage. The project, which started in September 2012, will have a duration of 24 months and is funded by the FP7 programme, under the call Research for the Benefit of SMEs.

The multidisciplinary consortium of the NanoCaTe project will develop a more efficient thermoelectric- and storage material based on nanocarbon (e.g. graphene and CNT) to reclaim waste heat by thermoelectric generators and to storage the energy in super capacitors or secondary batteries for manifold applications like pulsed sensors or mobile electronic devices. The integration of the developed materials into harvester and storage devices is a further step to characterize the performance of the innovative materials. Finally, a demonstrator consisting of harvester, storage and energy management represents a self-sustaining, universally usable, and maintenance-free power supply. The project will substantially strengthen the position of Europe in the field of thermoelectric and storage materials by developing devices with increased lifetime produced by cost-efficient technologies and therefore contributing to a further promotion of cleaner energy technologies.

LEITAT will focus in the development and integration of energy storage devices based on printed supercapacitor technology. We will provide printed micro-supercapacitors to be integrated upon flexible TEG device enabling the development of fully energy autonomous systems. In cooperation with the rest of partners involved in this task, LEITAT will define the needed interfaces between TEG and sensor IC to ensure power transfer between generating and consuming subsystems using the micro-supercapacitor as energy coupler.

The objective of the project REPUR is to offer viable solutions for the recycling of polyurethane foam waste originating from household appliances and mattresses for subsequent recovery in polymers based in polyols, new formulations of detergents based in polyols and their recovery as functional fillers in thermal insulating panels for the building industry. In order to do this, the project will focus on two lines of recycling: mechanical recycling and chemical recycling.

In mechanical recycling the objective will be to use of polyurethane as filler in composite materials for thermal insulation, allowing reduced use of virgin polymer while improving properties such as impact resistance.

On the other hand, in the chemical recycling the objective will be the depolymerization of polyurethane for obtaining polyols, which later will be used for the development of new formulations of detergents and to obtain new polymers based in polyols.

The REPUR project aims to develop new sustainable technologies that in the future will provide viable and global recycling polyurethane solutions without the need for a flow of raw materials to recycle pure chemical composition. This will considerably limit the costly process of selection and separation of raw materials as well as the downstream analysis of mixtures of polyols obtained. Through the application of the REPUR project outcomes, it is estimated that 20% of the residues from polyurethane waste can be recycled.

LEITAT collaborates in the study of the conditioning systems of polyurethane waste (PUR) – how it can be crushed, dried, etc. It also participates in the depolymerisation process of the PUR, by two distinct pathways: depolimerisation catalyzed by metal, and enzymatic depolimerisation, as well as in the processes of purification of the resulting polyols to then introduce them into new applications such as detergents, new synthesis of PUR and as functional filler in plastic matrices.

The majority of the polymeric materials used in flexible packaging (such as packaging DOYPACK) are composed of several layers of different materials that confer the necessary properties to protect the food that they will contain. These multilayer laminates are very difficult to recycle due to the impossibility of separating the layers, and as a consequence these laminated materials usually end up in landfills or incinerator without the option of its potential recycling.

The overall objective of i-PEGASUS project is to develop a brick type pouch or doypack container with an environmental impact 20% lower than the existing products in the market nowadays through: the use of a structured system (monolayer or multilayer) of a single base material (polyethylene); material reduction providing optimized properties to the product; use of solvent-free inks compatible with PE and with little impact on the color of recycled material; design an innovative packaging system for this new setting of materials.

LEITAT performs tasks related to the collection of materials based on PE requirements; defining the requirements according to the packaging system, surface properties and sustainability criteria; support in searching and selecting of additives for PE; surface modification of additives for use in PE, the application of the surface technology on PE base, performing compounding tests at laboratory scale; characterization of new PE composites; research on solvent-free inks (laboratory) and green solvents (laboratory) , conducting studies on the recyclability of the new developed packaging; support life cycle study and life cycle analysis studies on the packaging production process; and finally support the validation of the final products.

The general objective of the EPHOCELL project has been to define and develop an easy-to-implement wavelength modulator device with new advanced materials to radically improve the efficiency of photovoltaic panels.

The project is based on two mechanisms to modulate the wavelength of the high and low energy non used photons of the solar spectrum: (i) the down-shifting that allows the absorption of a ultraviolet high energy photon and the emission of a photon of lower energy; and (ii) the up-conversion that allows a convert infrared photons with lower energy to higher energy photons. EPHOCELL focuses on developing spectral converter solar concentrator. Then down-shifted photons and up-converted photons arrive to the solar cell improving the efficiency in energy conversion.

LEITAT coordinates this European consortium, composed by leading R&D institutions and companies: Max Planck Institute

CHIMIGRAF

In CHIMIGRAF, we share a challenge as a company: the ongoing development of more advanced and highly differenced products to keep the positioning achieved

and enter into new markets.

For this reason, besides its own human and technical resources, CHIMIGRAF has also the assistance of LEITAT Technological Centre, which provides us both qualified staff and materials and equipment, which, otherwise, would not be feasible to have them in our company. LEITAT provides us highly qualified personnel from a management point of view, by giving support to projects, preparation of docu-mentation and, especially from a technology point of view, with a young and professional team. This helps us to access to knowledge what otherwise we could not have within the cost structure of our company. We also would like to stress on the LEITAT facilities, both for research of new elements and their characterization.

With LEITAT, we are now developing two projects of great interest: the first one, Print4Pack, on highly conductive inks

for rotogravure printing of temperature sensors for the cold chain; the second one, iPegasus, for the development of a new kind of packaging with highly recyclability components. In parallel to these two projects, there are already different collaboration projects for new developments.

Definitely, we are aware that without the collaboration with LEITAT, we would not be able to face these projects, which have allowed us to position in a future in new markets through the product lines that represent technology novelties.

SOLER & PALAU RESEARCH

Working with LEITAT has been a great experience for Soler&Palau. We have found a strategic alliance of much productivity thanks to its commitment to quality and innovation in its work.
