Director’s Notes
Why produce dark themed plays?
This year we focused on plays that address socio-‐political themes. Last semester we were in the land of farce with The Inspector General, exposing small
community corruption. Now we take a very different journey with Far Away and One for the Road. These plays inhabit a dark place in human imagination, but one that is real for many people in our world. These stories may seem far away, but
wrestle with themes that we are constantly negotiating within our own community. To what extent do we trade personal freedoms for the promise of a government that assures to act in our own interest? Is torture ever morally acceptable? Is war acceptable? If it is, where is the line between morally good
and bad – and who gets to decide on that line?
We produce dark themed plays here at SNC for many reasons. As theatre artists, we affirm that art in all its forms can engage public discussion that can change our society for the better. As teachers, we believe it is important for students to learn how to work in many different forms of theatre. As storytellers, we have a unique
opportunity to tell the broad spectrum of human experience, some of which involves evil. This is not an attempt to eradicate it as much as to examine how we respond to it. How do we live in a world with such evil and remain morally true?
