Editor’s notes. As I write, there is still no sign
of the return of Spring– at least
not for some time yet. A blink
of sun at 7am gave us false
hopes of a pleasant day. Kay
and I met Geoff and Christine
Hillam at a garden centre,
eager to get started, but by the
time we left the rain was
already beginning to fall. Oh
well, it does give me an excuse
to stay in and get on with next
month’s issue of the Flyer!
Chris Thomas and I have been
busy putting together the final
touches for Rotarail2013, and
are confident that all will be
well! We managed a good
‘plug’ on Radio Solent last
week, when presenter Alex
Dyke hosted a programme on
model railways. A local
railway club member was
being interviewed, and as he
will be at Rotarail I asked if he
could give us a mention, which
he did! Meanwhile, I sent an
email to the programme
presenter with full details of
the event, and this was later
read out in full over the air!
The Rotary Club of Fareham
and Stubbington Study Centre,
whom we are supporting, both
had a good mention on air.
Reception at Winchester.
The reception gathering.
On Wednesday 17th
April
President Duncan, Gary
Willcocks and Dave Barclay
accompanied Chris Thomas, as
his invited guests to a
reception at Searle’s House,
Winchester. Searle’s House is
now the home of Hampshire
County Council leader, and
also of the Lord Lieutenant of
Hampshire.
This auspicious occasion was
an event hosted by the
Chairman of Hampshire
County Council, Andrew Joy
to honour those selected as
Hampshire’s nominations for
the Queen’s Award for
Voluntary Service. The eight
chosen projects, together with
their supporters, dignitaries,
local mayors and deputy
lieutenants gathered in the ante
room for a welcoming drink
and light refreshments.
The Chairman welcomed the
assembly on behalf of the
County, and introduced the
Lord Lieutenant, Dame Mary
Fagan. Dame Mary said how
pleased she was that
Hampshire showed such a
community spirit, and how
each nominated team should
be proud to have reached this
stage of selection. She stressed
![Page 2: Fareham Flyer - May 2013](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022080302/568c4a0a1a28ab4916968b45/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
that the award was a
community equivalent of an
MBE. Dame Mary then
mingled amongst the crowd,
and gave a good account of the
busy life of a Lord Lieutenant!
We were then invited into the
Assembly Room, where a
large and most appealing
buffet was laid out before us.
Everyone circulated, and the
conversation flowed, aided no
doubt by the plentiful supply
of liquid refreshment!
Group photographs were then
taken, and I fortunately was
able to record the event on my
mobile phone. (As usual the
camera was left behind!)
Chris, Gary and Duncan at the
buffet – Gluten-free provided!!
Results of the National
selections will be known on
2nd
June. We are all hoping
that Chris and the Rotary Club
of Fareham will be duly
recognised.
Goodbye to Chef Dave
At our lunchtime meeting on
Thursday 18th
April, we had
the sad occasion of saying
goodbye to Dave, who had
cooked our lunches at Cam’s
for the past two years.
During that time, Dave, in
liaison with PE Pam Bryant,
Betty Evans and Jean Tuck
had improved the catering
standards by a substantial
degree, giving us a varied
choice of menus, and also
catering for the special dietary
needs of members. Dave
always managed to find an
extra meal for late-comers, or
an omelette for those who
preferred something less
substantial than the main
choice.
President Duncan thanked
Dave on behalf of us all, and
gave two bottles of wine as a
token of our thanks.
Dave is moving off to
Alverstoke to raise the
gastronomic standards in that
most elegant part of Gosport!

An old man lay sprawled across
three entire seats in the movie
theatre. When the usher came by
and noticed this, he whispered to
the old man, "Sorry sir, but you're
only allowed one seat. “The old
man just groaned but didn't
budge.
The usher became more
impatient.
"Sir, if you don't get up from
there I'm going to have to call the
manager." Once again, the old
man just groaned. The usher
marched briskly back up the aisle,
and in a moment he returned with
the manager. Together the two of
them tried repeatedly to move the
old dishevelled man, but with no
success. Finally they summoned
the police. The officer surveyed
the situation briefly then asked,
"All right buddy what's your
name?"
"Fred," the old man moaned.
"Where ya from, Fred?" asked the
police officer. With terrible pain
in his voice," and without moving
a muscle, Fred replied, “THE
BALCONY!”

Report on Polio Position
16th April 2013 On 11 April, the 58th
anniversary of the
announcement of Jonas Salk’s
polio vaccine, experts from 80
countries cited the time-limited
opportunity to endorse the
GPEI Polio Eradication and
Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-
2018. Internet and social
media supporting comments
on this have cascaded in. At
the RIBI Conference in
Harrogate Bruce Aylwood
featured it in his presentation.
For those who may not have
had the opportunity to read the
declaration that was included
in the polio report last week,
here is a summary. More than
400 signatories urged
governments, international
organisations and civil society
to do their part to seize the
historic opportunity to end
polio and protect the world's
most vulnerable children and
future generations from polio.
The declaration calls for full
funding and implementation of
the new comprehensive plan to
end the disease entirely by
2018 for a cost of
approximately $5.5 billion.
The declaration was housed
online by Emory University at
vaccines.emory.edu/poliodecla
-ration. The declaration
emphasises that achieving
polio eradication requires
efforts interrelated with
strengthening routine
immunisation. The resources
and learning from these efforts
can be used to strengthen
coverage of other life-saving
vaccines, including for
children who have never been
reached with any health
interventions before. In light of
recent attacks on health
workers in some endemic
countries, the declaration
stresses the need to protect
polio vaccination teams as they
do their work. The GPEI plan
includes a series of risk-
mitigation strategies for
insecure areas, including
deepening engagement with
community and religious
leaders. The GPEI plan will be
publicly shared with the
immunisation community at
the Global Vaccine Summit
taking place 24-25 April 2013
in Abu Dhabi.
On 15 April Sir Tony Baldry
MP is to table an Early Day
Motion on the Government’s
commitment to the eradication
of polio. This has already been
circulated to all districts in
RIBI with a request that clubs
and individual members
contact their MP to support the
EDM. For those who may not
yet have seen the EDM a copy
is attached.
In summary the number of
polio cases reported in 2013 to
16 April is:
19 WPV1 cases compared to
47 at the same time in 2012 or
40% of the number last year.
No WPV3 cases vs. 8 in 2012.
The countries with WPV cases
reported this year are:
Nigeria 12 vs.23 at the same
time in 2012.
Pakistan 6 vs. 15 last year.
Afghanistan one vs. 6 last
year.
Chad has had no cases
reported but had 3 last year.
There was also one cVDPV
cases reported so the cVDPV
chart has been updated.

And whilst on the subject,
Geoff Hillam has provided the
following details:
INDIAN NID It has now been confirmed by
the Rotary Polio Office in
Delhi that there will be a sub
NID in November 2013, BUT
THE ACTUAL DATE IS
NOT YET FIXED so no
reservations can be made until
we have confirmation of this
by late August or early
September. In a full NID the
aim is to immunise 172 million
children under 5 years old. In a
sub NID only the children in
the high risk states of Uttar
Pradesh and Bihar plus the
cities with a highly transitory
population like Delhi and
Mumbai are targeted when 68
to 70million children will be
immunised and there will
definitely be an RIBI group
going to help.
Although the date is not fixed,
we can think about some
preliminary planning. The
mass immunisation is always
on Sunday which cuts it down
to 4 dates in November. There
are public holidays on 3rd
and
17th
, meaning it must be on
10th
or 24th
. As it is usually
nearer to the beginning of the
![Page 4: Fareham Flyer - May 2013](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022080302/568c4a0a1a28ab4916968b45/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
month, I will outline a
preliminary programme based
on the date being 10th
November but you must accept
that the programme could slip
back by two weeks. We are
now assuming we will get 30
to 50 volunteers as opposed to
67 in February 2013 when we
were joined by 15 from Rotary
Clubs in Belgium and
Luxembourg. The Rotary
Office in Delhi will now
allocate two locations where
our volunteers will help the
local Rotarians. These will be:
Badaun: A poor town situated
a six mile drive from Delhi in
Uttar Pradesh. A group not
exceeding 24 will be required.
Delhi: The Delhi area can take
unlimited volunteers as
District 3010 has 130 Rotary
Clubs.
A full programme has now
been prepared. Geoff Hillam
can provide further details
should anyone wish, or
alternately -

Now this IS spin!
Be careful when researching
your family tree – you never
know what might turn up!
Judy Rudd, an amateur
genealogy researcher in south
east Queensland, was doing
some personal work on her
own family tree. She
discovered that ex-Prime
Minister Kevin Rudd's great-
great uncle, Remus Rudd, was
hanged for horse stealing and
train robbery in Melbourne in
1889. Both Judy and Kevin
Rudd share this common
ancestor.
The only known photograph of
Remus shows him standing on
the gallows at the Melbourne
Jail.
On the back of the picture Judy
obtained during her research is
this inscription:
'Remus Rudd horse thief, sent
to Melbourne Jail 1885,
escaped 1887, robbed the
Melbourne-Geelong train six
times.
Caught by the Victoria Police
Force, convicted and hanged in
1889.'
So Judy recently e-mailed ex-
Prime Minister Rudd for
information about their great-
great uncle, Remus Rudd.
Believe it or not, Kevin Rudd's
staff sent back the following
biographical sketch for her
research:
"Remus Rudd was famous in
Victoria during the mid to late
1800s. His business empire grew
to include acquisition of valuable
equestrian assets and intimate
dealings with the Melbourne-
Geelong Railroad. Beginning in
1883, he devoted several years of
his life to government service,
finally taking leave to resume his
dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a
vital investigation run by the
Victoria Police Force. In 1889,
Remus passed away during an
important civic function held in
his honour when the platform
upon which he was standing
collapsed." NOW That's how it's done,
Folks!
NOW THAT'S POLITICAL
SPIN !

"No" said Mick "but it
shouldn't be long now though.
