1 HOLIDAY 2020 Paw Prints Farewell 2020, Hello 2021 ! 2020 has been a challenging year like none other. But we like to focus on the positive here, and honestly, we’re all a little weary of talking about the negative aspects of 2020. And at this time of year every year, we are all more thankful (and positive) as we reflect on what we have. At the Ulster County SPCA we are most thankful for you – our supporters. Without you we could not do all that we do for the animals. And as for the animals, I can imagine what they are grateful for. Almost 700 animals so far this year are happy for being adopted into a loving home – full bellies, warm beds and a lifetime of snuggles, ear-scritches and belly rubs. Our cockfighting roosters no longer endure the pain and suffering of such blood sport. The dogs rescued from hurricanes, cats saved from euthanasia due to overcrowding, rabbits liberated from hoarding cases – all safe and relieved knowing they have found a new life here. Smudge the Pig, injured, unable to rise and left alone after losing a fight with another pig, now happily greets with a smile and endless tail wags like a puppy. But there’s more who are thankful this year…the hundreds of dogs and cats who have stayed in their homes with full food bowls from the Community Pet Food Pantry, low-cost or free vaccinations to keep them healthy, and spay surgeries to prevent constant pregnancies. These animals may not stay in our facility, but their lives are dramatically improved thanks to the community programs available here. None of these animals’ lives could be saved or changed without your support. With 2021 right around the corner, we know what we want for our Holiday Wish - to do even more to improve the lives of animals in our community and beyond; to make an even greater impact providing more opportunities for animals to stay in their loving homes, or find new homes for those still looking. You can make those wishes come true this Holiday Season and beyond with a gift to the shelter. Your compassion and love for animals is evident, and there are always more animals – dogs, cats, farm animals - who are in need of our help. Our goal is to provide a better life for them all by raising $10,000 by December 31st, but we can’t do it without help. 2021 will mark 130 years that the Ulster County SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare and life-saving in Ulster County. As we look to this next anniversary year, we remain committed to our mission and, with you on our team, we know we can face any challenges the New Year brings. Thank you again for all that you do in providing a voice for the voiceless and a home for the homeless. For Our Four-Legged Friends, Gina Carbonari Executive Director Smudge enjoying some Fall sunbathing. Riley and her adopter “fell in love” at the UCSPCA!

HOLIDAY 2020

Paw PrintsFarewell 2020, Hello 2021 !

With 2021 right around the corner, we know what we want for our Holiday Wish - to do even more to improve the lives of animals in our community and beyond; to make an even greater impact providing more

opportunities for animals to stay in their loving homes, or find new homes for those still looking.

‘Tis the season to bring someone home for the holidays, and I’m hoping it will be me! I’m a bundle of joy all wrapped up in a bow, waiting to share my wiggles and wet kisses with you. Is that snow on the ground? Let’s go romp and play in it, maybe make a few messy snow angels together, or get into a friendly snowball fight! I’m just so excited for the holidays and to go home with my family!

Let’s deck the halls while the kids are out playing in the snow – you and I can curl up next to a warm fire when we’re done, and take a well-deserved nap together. I’m an older gentleman who prefers a warm blanket and the quiet of a winter evening tucked in. A few ear scritches would not go unappreciated, along with a mug of hot cocoa and your fine company.

Did someone say hot cocoa? If there are holiday treats to be eating, then I say bring on the figgy pudding! I love all the deliciousness the holidays have to offer and can’t wait to share it with everyone! Are those presents under the tree for me?! Even if they weren’t, I’ve already opened them, just to check. Oh boy, carolers! I’m glad they’re outside though – I like the holidays best when it’s just you and me.

Fa-la-la-la! I do so enjoy a good caroling, especially with all my other cat friends, wrapped up in scarves and serenading you with soft meows. I’m a gentile older lady who likes things done the old-fashioned way: knitted scarves, family traditions, and a home without too much hustle and bustle. Perhaps your family might become my own this holiday season?

Over The Rainbow BridgePart of caring for animals is accepting

the inevitability of loss and using that acceptance to enjoy and love the animals in our care while they are with us. One such cat was Beau, who passed away in late October from old age.

Beau came to the Ulster County SPCA in 2018, after being surrendered along with her littermate and brother, Bobby. The two were a bonded pair, having spent their entire lives together. It was always our hope that they would be adopted together as well. They were both already seniors with renal failure when they were brought to the shelter, and over the last two years, Beau and Bobby grew old and frail together, an aging couple that leaned on one another for love and support.

Along with her brother, Beau became the darling of the cattery. She always ran to greet staff, volunteers and visitors as they entered the room, meowing in her crackly voice, and demanding pets. Her favorite place was in someone’s lap. Beau gave more love than we could ever give her in return, and we will all miss her very much,

especially Bobby.Beau’s story is a happy one, thanks to the

support the Ulster County SPCA receives from its volunteers and donors. Given her age and the medical needs that naturally follow, Beau’s chances of being adopted were few. Thankfully, Beau and other cats like her can live out their lives in the safety and comfort of the Ulster County SPCA, without the fear of being euthanized due to a

lack of space or not being adopted. The contributions and financial support we receive makes that possible. This is what no-kill is about.

We know many of our volunteers and visitors were looking forward to returning to the cattery once the pandemic is over, to receive a cheerful greeting from this sweet old lady. As difficult as her passing is, we take comfort in knowing that the last few years of Beau’s life were filled with warm laps, visits from dear friends, the comfort of her brother, and all the love the staff, volunteers and supporters of the Ulster County SPCA had to offer. Run free at the Rainbow Bridge, Beau!

Send someone you love an Ulster County SPCA Caroling Canine this holiday season! Happy Tails: Camille – I Will Survive!

It was a summer evening when Kingston Police called the UCSPCA as the City’s Dog Control about a dog that had been found on the side of a road. We answered the call and arrived to find an extremely emaciated pit mix wobbly from hunger. She also was clearly a senior, and with advanced cataracts, likely blind. Light as a feather to pick up and put into the vehicle, upon arrival to the emergency clinic she was a mere 24 pounds.

Her diagnosis of Diabetic Ketoacidosis explained her blindness and severe weight loss. She had not been receiving the insulin she needed, and we began a treatment plan for her with a guarded prognosis. With twice a day insulin injections and a specific diet plan, Camille was on her way now to recovery.

Because of her condition and medical needs, specifically her evening injections, Camille lived in the reception area. She quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite, and after three months was up to 40 pounds (yes, she was THAT underweight). She still has a few more

pounds to gain, but we’re certain that won’t be a problem. She was fostered for a couple of weeks, but as happens sometimes, her foster Mom was a “failure;” so Camille has now joined their pack as a permanent family member!

Sweet Camille is a gentle, loving older gal who has plenty of spunk in her, often chasing her favorite “hedgehog” toy. She is loved by so many people who had the fortune to cross her path, and we are thankful she found her way to us to literally save her life. Who knows how much longer she would have lasted without proper care. The Camille’s out there are the reason we are here. She truly is a survivor.

Kitty waiting patiently for Santa Paws to arrive…

You Can be “Santa Paws!” Here’s How:1. Make a monetary donation or donate items from our wish list. Below is a short list; our full list is found on Amazon.com.

2. Make a symbolic gift to a dog or cat at the Ulster County SPCA by purchasing a Whisker Wish, and help provide them with all the love, hope and care they need until finding their fur-ever home.  Go to ucspca.org/shop/

3. Donate to our food pantry and ensure we can continue to provide families and their pets with the support they need to make it through these tough times – together. Many are facing financial hardships and rely on the Ulster County SPCA’s free community food pantry to continue to care for their animals. Without this critical support, families may be forced to surrender or rehome their pets.

Tips for Holiday Pet SafetyHowever you celebrate the winter holidays, make sure your pets are happy and safe too!

Secure all decorations. Anchor your tree to prevent your dog or cat from knocking it over during the holiday excitement. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are poisonous and not recommended for households with pets. Keep in mind your pet views most of your decorations as toys, so be cautious and observant with ornaments, wires, hooks, tinsel and garland – all of which can cause blockages and require surgery if swallowed.

Do not leave open flames unattended. Candles and fires in the fireplace offer a warm glow and seasonal cheer, but a slight brush from a cat or wag from a dog can knock over items and cause a fire. Make sure open flames are extinguished before leaving a room.

Hide the Good Stuff. Keep sweet, fatty and spicy foods and alcohol out of reach of pets. These will not only cause vomiting and/or severe diarrhea, but potentially an emergency room visit. A cover over the garbage can will also help any wandering noses from getting into trouble.

Set some rules and stick to them. This is for both your pets and your guests. Holidays can be overwhelming for

pets too, but keeping a routine for them, and setting behavior rules, can help. Make sure they have a place to go that is comfortable for them, whether that’s a bed, crate or room located in a quiet part of the house. If they are getting overstimulated from the excitement, a time out is appropriate, and probably welcomed by all. Make sure guests also understand the rules. Your rules for your pet – not giving “people food,” not allowing jumping, etc. – should still all be “no-nos” and not encouraged by guests.

Taking care of an outdoor cat community or colony? For their safety during colder months, don’t forget to provide insulated housing. A Styrofoam cooler or plastic bin filled with straw and bedding can become a warm, safe place.
