This weekend we will be undertaking an effort to re-connect with all our parishioners who come to Mass here in our catholic community. During this year, we want to continue a way of being ‘church’ with all families who have been coming here for many years, and also with those who are relatively new. We believe that our faithful parishioners are the ‘heart’ of our Catholic Community and our desire is that each truly begins to experience a real sense of belonging, welcome and hospi- tality. So today is ‘Making Connections’ weekend and we shall be inviting all those attending Mass to complete a parish Connection Card. These Connection Cards will allow the parish leadership to design and plan meaningful ways to be relevant as ‘Church’ now and into the future. It will assist us to build upon the formation that has already begun, and assist update our Parish Census register. This initiative will apply to ALL parishioners – old & new. Parishioner Connection Cards will be available at all Masses. Our aim is that all parishioners complete a Connection Card at this time. FAREWELL MESSAGE The 1 Red class of St Mark’s College wrote on the card that they gave me: “Fr Harold we will miss your smile at Mass” made me smile all the more. God’s giſt of the priesthood to myself and hopefully to all that I come to meet is something that we will all be thankful to the Lord for. I am humbled, blessed and inspired by all God’s people in all walks of life. It is an enormous giſt that if understand fully and profoundly anyone would not exchange for anything else in the world. Unworthy as we are (the priest), we try our best to become an experience of God’s love in the world that we are sent to. We pray that we will only proclaim Jesus, live Jesus and share Jesus to all. I would like to extend my gratude again and again to all. The short amount of me I spent in Port Pirie, Crystal Brook, Redhill, Port Broughton and Burra parishes, school and community has allowed me to experience pockets of graces, rains of generosity, tsunamis of kindness, bonfires of warmth, wifi’s of joy, and rivers of love. The experiences affirmed and confirmed my vocaon to the priesthood. It has been a tradion every me I leave a parish to ask for forgiveness if I offended anyone which is never and will never be my intenon in my life. I only pray and hope that it is only the love of Christ that I preach and live in my lifeme which is always difficult and so I connuously ask for your prayers. Rest assured of my prayers and may God’s blessings be upon each one of you especially those who are finding it tough. Always remember that God loves you, Jesus cares for you and the Holy Spirit is with you. May the intercession of the Blessed Mother always remind you that you are never alone in your journey in the world. Amen. Let us never stop telling the world of God’s Love. Thank You very much, Maraming Salamat po and Grazie mille! Fr Harold ROSARY IN MAY During the month of May, the Rosary will be prayed on Fridays after the Cathedral Mass. Everyone is welcome to join. Spiritual or Religious: What’s the difference? Written by Shane Dwyer The word ‘spirituality’ is all the rage today. It has become one of those commonplace ideas that gets used by all sorts of people in all sorts of contexts. Today you can scarcely watch an interview with a celebrity without them humbly noting that, while they may not be religious, they are ‘spiritual’. And let’s face it, it sounds fair enough. Being religious – that is to say – identifying yourself as belonging to a particular religion, is not something that sits easily in the world in which we live. It sounds like you’re limiting your options and unnecessarily restricting yourself. Instead, ‘we all really know’ that there are many forms of truth out there, and we are beyond identifying ourselves with just one of them…Isn’t that right? So when Hollywood celebrities describe themselves as ‘spiritual’ we applaud them for being so open-minded…so in touch with themselves…so nice…so beyond religion. The fact is all human beings are instinctively spiritual. Therefore, to claim to ‘be’ spiritual is a little like claiming to have limbs, a heart, or a brain. All these things are true or otherwise you would be dead. The same is true of being spiritual. Even those who deny the significance of things spiritual have some idea of what people mean when they talk about such things. Whether we embrace it or not, human beings instinctively have the capacity for spiritual awareness. So why not just be ‘spiritual’ and ignore religion altogether? One of the reasons is this: religion provides us with the ability to make sense of the spiritual dimension of life. It gives us a structure within which we can name our experience, and a way of ritualising that experience. It also connects us with others who are seeking to understand and deepen their awareness of those experiences. Religion provides us with a vocabulary and a community. Without it, what we are left with is just our own subjectivity, open to the whims and vagaries of life. Of course religion has its problems. That is inevitable, as all reli- gions are impacted upon by the weakness and inconsistencies of their adherents. That does not make what they have to teach us any less true. As a Catholic I often have to reflect on this point in the current context. I have come to see that when Catholics fail it isn’t be- cause they have been taught to do so by the religion they profess. In fact, it’s the opposite: Catholics fail when they ignore the teachings they have been taught. The same is true of any of the great faiths of the world: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism…All are vulnerable to distortion by the people who iden- tify with them. But rather than rejecting religion, isn’t the way forward to find what’s authentic within the religious quest and allow it to guide us on the journey towards becoming the people of love we have been created to be?
