Farewell Fr. Lovitsch Please come to thank Fr. John Lovitsch for his priestly ministry at SS. Peter and Paul and to wish him well at his new assignment at St. Mary’s Parish Sunday, June 15th 11:00am Mass in the Church Reception following in the Ministry Center Welcome Fr. Raj and Fr. Steven! I am Father Jyothi Raju Kocherla. I go by Father Raj. I am from India. I was ordained as a priest on March 15, 2002. For almost ten years, I was in India working in my diocese as a pastor and as an associate. I came to the United States on February 21, 2012. I was appointed as Parochial Vicar at Saint Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet. I enjoyed my stay at Saint Mary Nativity and learned many things. I have now been given the opportunity to render my priestly services at SS Peter and Paul Parish under the guidance of Father Tom Milota, your pastor. I am very thankful to God for giving me this chance to serve you. I look forward to meeting all of you. Please keep me in your prayers during my transition as I will keep you in mine. It is with great joy and excitement that I begin my second priestly assignment at Saints Peter and Paul. I look forward to building many new relationships, sharing my studies and prayer, and journeying together in our rela- tionship with Jesus Christ. I bring with me a rich history and many beautiful relationships, which will assist me in serving Saints Peter and Paul Parish. I grew up in Glen Ellyn and am the eldest child of John and Penny Borello. I have three sisters, two of whom are married and one who is engaged. I attended Glenbard South High School before beginning college at the University of Illinois in Urbana. I graduated with degrees in specialized chemistry and chemical engineering. While studying in Champaign, I returned to the faith of my childhood. It was through many acts of God’s mercy and providence that I began to fall in love with our Lord Jesus Christ. During my junior year, while at a formal with my girlfriend, I felt the Lord inviting me to seminary. I responded, “Do you really want me to go to semi- nary?” In the depth of my heart, I believed the Lord said “yes.” So I asked, “Do I have to?” And, again I felt as though God said, “No, but I want you to.” So at that moment, I began my journey with our Lord. I started studying for priesthood in 2005 with the Diocese of Peoria at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmittsburg, Maryland. These were three fruitful years of spiritual growth in my life. While there, my heart opened more and more to God’s call, as well as the realization that I needed to return to Diocese of Joliet to finish my studies. Upon my return to Joliet, I knew I was home and exactly where I was supposed to be. I participated in my first Youth Leadership Confer- ence, lived at Visitation Parish for 4 months, and spent a summer leading a Totus Tuus team across the diocese. During my third year of seminary, I had the opportunity to serve as a Hospital Chaplain to the sick and dying at Loyola Medical Center. I also visited the Holy Land during this time. I was ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Sartain on August 28, 2010. As a deacon, I severed the community of St. Joseph in Downers Grove. On June 4, 2011, I was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Siegel, and began serving as a priest of Jesus Christ at Notre Dame Parish in Clarendon Hills. Throughout all these experiences, The Lord formed and fostered many beautiful friendships which bless my priesthood and encourage me to become a holier and more faithful priest. Just as the Lord called me to seminary, to the priesthood and to serve at Notre Dame, He now calls me to serve at the side of Fr. Milota and SS. Peter and Paul Parish. Please pray for me that I might be a good and holy priest for you, and the people God has called me to serve. Thank you for your warm and hospitable welcome, and I look forward to knowing you on a more personal level in the coming years. Fr. Raj Kocherla Fr. Steven Borello

Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Corpus Christi Next Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and is a day when we commemorate the great gift of the Most Holy Eucharist. Please join us for Mass at 12:30 followed by a Eucharistic Procession through the streets surrounding our parish church. Thank you to all those from our Perpetual Adoration Committee and Worship staff who have worked so hard to bring this to fruition each year.

Father Lovitsch Farewell! We give thanks for the priesthood of Father John Lovitsch and the care which he has shown to so many here. He has made an impact in the year that he has been with us and has touched so many hearts. Thank you, Fr. Lovitsch! If you would like to keep in touch with Fr. Lovitsch, he will be serving at St. Mary in Mokena beginning next week. St. Mary Catholic Church, 19515 South 115th Avenue, Mokena, IL 60448-0002. Welcome Fr. Jyothi Raja Kocherla and Fr. Steven Borello! Fr. Raj and Fr. Steven will take turns introducing themselves at the Masses the next two weekends. Please take a moment to stop after Mass and welcome them to our parish. We will have a brief biography of them in the bulletin this weekend.

Reminder: Repair Work on church building There will be repair work on the exterior of the church going on for several months beginning the week after next. Please note that there will be varying times when one or several of the entrances will need to be blocked off. Thank you for your understanding and patience. We are doing all this to help maintain our precious church.

Pass It On During our initial campaign for "Pass It On" one of the more popular projects put forward was some restoration work done in the sanctuary of our parish church. We will begin presenting to the community the proposals for this work, its history and why this is important. Please watch the bulletin for more details and opportunities for the community to see and discuss the plans in the coming weeks. May Almighty God bless you and keep you.

WHAT IS TOTUS TUUS? The Totus Tuus parish summer catechetical program, a week-long “parish mission” for Catholic youth in the 1st through 12th grades, is dedicated to proclamation of the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangeliza-tion, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion, and Eucharistic worship. Totus Tuus accomplishes this by taking college students and seminarians to engage the youth of the parish with skits, songs, games and inspiring, interactive teaching. Totus Tuus instructs young people in the basic tenets of the Catholic faith to cultivate both a firm intellectual grounding and a solid personal relationship with Christ. Totus Tuus demonstrates that one can be a faithful, practicing Catholic and still have fun! While classes comprise part of the day, Totus Tuus is not school and makes sure that the kids have FUN too! There-fore, there is a “pump up” to start each day, snack break in the morning, recess and “cool down” after lunch, and a skit break in the afternoon. This popular program has grown tremendously in the few years since it started here…register your child to be a part of it!

TOTALLY YOURS Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning “totally yours,” was the motto of St. John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Mont-fort’s work, True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through the hands of our Blessed Mother Mary. It also expresses our effort to give all that we have to every young person we encounter. Totus Tuus seeks to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an open-ness to their vocation by challenging them to give themselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her.

CURRICULUM

The Totus Tuus program has divided the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church into a six year cycle. Additionally, each summer is dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary. In 2014, Totus Tuus will cover: Theme: The 10 Commandments Mysteries: The Luminous Mysteries

The Saints Peter and Paul Peace and Social Justice Committee invites you to focus on Catholic Relief Services’ MICROFINANCE operations

We began our last article by pointing out the pervasiveness of agriculture and warfare in Sacred Scripture, and then discussed how Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS’) Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC) model of microfinance helps confront the challenges related to agriculture and warfare today. Since Sacred Scripture is always a good place to start, we will begin this article by pointing out another of its recurrent themes—slavery. Like agriculture and warfare, slavery pops up everywhere in Sacred Scripture. There is the obvious example of the events leading up to the Exodus, but images of slavery run all the way through the New Testament as well. Sadly, slavery continues to rear its ugly head in our world today. Modern slavery (as it’s called) includes a variety of activities and goes by several names, such as slavery, forced labor and human traffick-ing. According to the 2013 Global Slavery Index, an estimated 29.8 million people around the world are currently living as “modern” slaves.

That figure has gotten the attention of some of the world’s most influential leaders, and on March 17th, the Vatican announced the inauguration of the Global Freedom Network, a diverse association of faith leaders (including Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar) and secular leaders which has as its goal eradicating modern slavery and human trafficking around the world by 2020. This recent and groundbreaking step is part of a long fight to end slavery involving our Church and other organizations of goodwill on one side, and those seeking to profit from slavery on the other side. CRS’ SILC model of microfinance is a part of that fight, and in particular, the fight to end child trafficking. Child trafficking recently gained some prominence in the American imagination as many expressed fears that the Nigerian schoolgirls abducted in April may be sold into slavery by their kidnappers. However, many other children are vulnerable to trafficking and do not gain any media attention. As difficult as it may be for many of us to believe, there are circumstances under which even loving parents allow traffickers to take their children away, even if they know their children will be subject to forced labor. According to CRS, “Two of the primary causes for sending children away include lack of economic opportunities and limited knowledge on the negative effects of this decision. CRS believes that access to savings and credit through SILC can enable families to withstand the financial pressures that foster trafficking.” As we have seen over the past several months, SILC groups can provide economic opportunities and improve financial management for some of the world’s most vulnerable households. In such households, a financial emergency or extreme hardship can make the offers of traffickers (as little as 25 USD) too good to refuse. SILC groups, however, can make better offers. They can provide loans or even grants that can meet the urgent needs of these households. SILC funds can also provide startup capital for the type of income-generating activities that make individuals and households less vulnerable to financial emergencies in the first place. SILC groups also provide a platform for education and awareness. In areas with relatively uneducated populations, and with relatively little access to news media, ignorance and misinformation can easily blanket entire groups of people, with devastating consequences. According to CRS, “In one study of recovered exploited children, over 40% of the parents said they had allowed their children to be taken away by traffickers because they were told their children would receive a better education (UNICEF Benin 1998). In addition, research of the Education First Project in Benin indi-cates that even if parents knew that their children had been trafficked into labor, they had not been aware of the severe deprivation and abuse that their children had been suffering. Once parents, and in particular mothers, became aware of the dangers of child trafficking, they became more en-gaged in preventing it within their families.” SILC groups encourage sharing and the exchange of ideas, making them the perfect place to raise awareness and dispel lies. Agnes Houdje, a member of a SILC group in Benin, provides a perfect example of how both the financial and informational benefits of SILC can combat child trafficking. Agnes’ friends encouraged her to send one of her seven children away to work, saying it would be an “investment” for the family. Agnes, however, refused. She used loans from her SILC group to expand her cheese making business, which provided better opportunities for her and her family. Agnes’ personal insight also makes her a valuable asset to the rest of her group: “I was placed in the city with a compatriot when I was a child. The physical cruelty and humiliations that I underwent then were not so harsh in comparison with what happens these days. Whatever the difficulties, we must avoid the placement of children.” It is important to remember that human trafficking is a business, and ending it will take economic solutions that put traffickers out of business. The SILC model is one such solution. As we have seen over this series on CRS’ microfinance operations, focusing on the SILC model in Africa, SILC offers solutions that can help the world’s most vulnerable citizens overcome their most vexing challenges: water and sanitation, HIV/AIDS, orphans and vulnerable children, health, education, agriculture, and peacebuilding. SILC groups promote human dignity and development from the bottom up by empowering members with simple and easily adaptable tools and encouraging solidarity. The investment on behalf of CRS is minimal and temporary, but the self-sustaining nature of the groups means the benefits can multiply perpetually. If you would like to learn more about CRS or the SILC model, please visit crs.org. The Peace and Social Justice committee also invites you to visit our page on the Saints Peter and Paul Website, where you can find this and other bulletin articles, helpful links, ways to get involved, and dates of our upcoming meetings (if you hover or click on the “Christian service” tab at the top of the Saints Peter and Paul website, a dropdown box will appear, “Peace and Social Justice” is in that drop box, click on it and it will take you to our page, or you can type sspeterandpaul.net/christian-service/peace-and-social-justice/ into your browser). We would love to see you at one of our upcoming meetings, and look forward to providing all Saints Peter and Paul parishioners with more information on topics related to our ministry.
