Some of you have stayed for the traditional 2 years, others we have been blessed to have for 3, the odd one or two have persisted for about 7 (you know who you are!)... Regardless of time spent, we thank you all for your hard work and dedication whilst attending the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre and truly wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours. We always love to get an update on how you are doing; weeks, months or even years after you have departed, so please keep in touch. The final assembly where we gathered all of those departing us took place on 30 th June and had the rather exotic theme of “Hawaiian Heaven”. Championed by Emily Rooney of the Student Voice, students were invited to wear their most garish of floral prints to attend the leaver’s assembly and later a meal with their peers and staff. This is always a pleasant gathering and we always encourage all students and staff to attend. “I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your dedication, hard work and commitment over the last 2 years , It has truly been a privilege to have known you. Watching you grow into confident, intelligent and capable young men and women has made me so proud. I wish you well in your next venture whatever that may be! Best wishes” —Ceri Evans (Deputy Director)

On June 30th we said a fond farewell to the students of 2016. BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE SUCCESS

Throughout the Spring & Summer terms, we arranged for a BSL tutor to come and spend one lunchtime session per week with students, as requested and organised through the Student Voice. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive from all the students involved, who quoted the training course as being interesting, informative and enabling them to use basic sign language in their day to day lives. Students will all receive a basic BSL qualification certificate to take with them for the future. The course was so well received, that it is the intention of the Sixth Form to run similar sessions next academic year and for the foreseeable future. A first aid course is also in the pipeline. Should there be any other courses of interest to you, make your suggestion to the Student Voice.

Thank you to all students who exhibited their work for the Fine Art, Photography and Textiles Exhibition. We may proudly use the works in future Sixth Form marketing.

SCSC EUROPEAN

UNION MOCK BREXIT

REFERENDUM On Wednesday 25th May 2016, the Sixth Form held a mock European Union British Exit referendum (Brexit). This was mostly held in the spirit of British values, but also as a talking point to get students discussing politics, the economy, and the wider reaching consequences of such a momentous decision. For many Year 12 students, they would also not be eligible to vote on the real referendum come June 23rd, so we felt it fitting to give them a voice, just to clarify whether or not their vote would vary to that of their peers. The day itself was a great opportunity for staff and students alike to talk about politics in a way in which it never otherwise is. Students were really engaged and it was great to see almost 50% of them place a vote; an impressive number considering the number who either could not make up their mind on which way to vote and several BTEC courses out on work experience on the day of polling. Mrs Trevelyan, who helped organise the mock referendum and manned the Polling Station in the Sixth Form Silent Study/Library was delighted to see so many students interested in such an important topical issue and glad to see so many new faces coming in to place their votes. The results came in and the Students (and Staff) of the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre voted in favour of remaining in the European Union. Our results far exceeded what other national polls were suggesting, with voters strongly in favour of “remain”. Interestingly, national statistics suggested that the older generation were more inclined to vote “leave”. However, our poll suggested that Staff, were even more in favour of “remain” than that of the younger generation of voters in years 12 & 13. Thank you to all who participated in our mock referendum held on 25/5/2016.

All SCSC 108 64 44 139 247 43.7% 59% 41%

Shown above are the in depth break downs of the Student & Staff vote. Students & Staff alike were considerably shocked at the level of difference between ‘remain’ & ‘leave’ particularly by staff - contrary to the national opinion polls at the time; which suggested more or less a 50/50 split. As we know now, on the 23rd June 2016, the Referendum on Britain’s membership took place and the result was to leave the European Union, with a vote distribution of 52% Leave to 48% Remain.

This shows that the young people of the Sixth Form would have voted in opposition to that of the UK public and overall outcome of the EU referendum. After this monumental decision taken by the citizens of the United Kingdom, Mr Margiotta, teacher of Government & Politics at the Sixth Form had the following to say “The nation has spoken. Welcome to the brave new World”.

CAMBRIDGE RESIDENTIALS

Miss Ashford nominated students Casey Pham and Erin Raif for a summer residential at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. We are delighted to report that both students were accepted and offered a place. They will be attending Emmanuel College in Cambridge for two days to experience student life. Emmanuel College is one of the larger colleges of the University of Cambridge, embracing a community of around 500 undergraduate students; 150 graduate students; 90 Fellows and 150 College Staff. Casey and Erin will be able to attend lectures on their chosen degree subject to learn more about studying at university level. This will be a fantastic opportunity to develop their UCAS applications and gather further understanding of their chosen subjects. Good luck to Casey & Erin for the their residentials.

On Friday 17th June, the Health and Social Care group had a farewell tea party. It was a lovely send off and there were plenty of tears along the way! It has been an incredible 2 years and the students have progressed so much during the course both academically and personally. “I hope the HSC students enjoyed their time in the Sixth Form, and that they take full ad-vantage of all the many opportunities offered to them in future. I will miss them all and hope they stay in touch and be my future guest speak-ers for other HSC students”. Mrs E Summerhayes

SCSC STUDENT VOICE

STUDENT & STAFF FOOTBALL FESTIVITIES

On Thursday 16 June at 14:00 live from Stade Bollaert-Delelis, England were due to play Wales in the UEFA EURO Group stage. For the one off special event, afternoon sessions were brought forward to run through lunch, and the game was shown on the communal area TV screen in the Sixth Form building. The atmosphere was great as students joined members of staff, members of SLT and even a governor of the Stanford & Corringham Schools Trust for the duration of the game. Unfortunately for the only student in attendance supporting Wales; Tom Francis-Jones, England would grab the late winner. Thank you to everyone who came along for the game, we hope all students enjoyed it as much as the staff in attendance did.

Since the last edition, the Student Voice have overseen the introduction of the brand new suggestion box, dubbed the “Voice Box” (pictured right). Situated just outside 601, next to the new & improved Student Voice notice board, students have been submit-ting suggestions regularly. All suggestions are reviewed by the Student Voice and management staff of the Sixth Form. Any ideas with quick fixes are being regularly im-plemented without delay. Ideas which require financing or more planning are discussed in Student Voice meetings and taken to SLT meetings at a later date. Since the last update, several suggestions have come in requesting a pedestrian gate at the exit to the GHS car-park. This is being investigated and updates will follow. The outdoor recreation space has received new plants and flowers and brand new furniture, which was very popular during the hot weather. Table Tennis continues to remain popular so further improvements are currently being investigated to the outdoor space, which includes artificial grass plus additional plants & decorations. Thank you to the members of the Student Voice leaving us for pastures new at the end of their Year 13, your hard work and service to your fellow students has been greatly appreciated.

Wednesday 20th April was the date for the Football Academy’s first ever cup final. After several difficult knock-out rounds, the final was due to be played against Southend based St Thomas More. Taking place at our home ground of Rookery Hill under glorious conditions, staff and students turned out to support the team in large numbers. The game started evenly, but very early on, we took the lead through a well placed finish by Sonny Kirsopp off of a simple through pass from the midfield. The lead was maintained throughout the game, but frustrations began to build as we struggled to increase the lead. The game remained relatively even but difficult decisions from the refereeing team made the game even more taxing. A few bookings came our way and the game went to the interval with the lead staying 1-0 to the Football Academy. As the game proceeded, St Thomas More began to pile the pressure on, and the delicate lead began to look increasingly vulnerable. However, it wasn’t until the dying moments of the game, that another goal was scored. This time it went to the visitors, St Thomas More, who capitalised on the pressure and managed to net the equaliser from a corner kick. With just a few minutes until full-time after the goal was netted, the game inevitably finished 1-1 and headed for extra time. Early into extra time, St Thomas More continued to pile on the pressure, earning themselves another corner kick. With what was almost a clone of their first goal, they once again utilised the set piece move culminating in a headed goal and for the first time of the game, took the lead, making the score 1-2. For the remainder of extra time, the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Football Academy took the initiative as we desperately searched for the equaliser. Frustration began to set in as chance after chance waned away. After a difficult second half of extra time the score remained the same as victory was declared for the visitors. All in all we are very proud of the team and everyone involved in the Football Academy for reaching our first ever Cup Final. Finishing as finalists is nothing to be ashamed of and we thank everyone for their hard work and dedication this season.

18 Goals Darren Phillips

14 Goals Harry Hearn

8 Goals Fraser Williams

Manager John Coventry & Assistant Charlie Pardoe discuss tactics with the team before extra time begins.

As the season drew to it’s close, after a very successful league and cup campaign, the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Football Academy sat in top position of the Essex County Schools & Colleges U19 League Division 2 South. Palmer’s College postponed our final fixture against them at the last minute, so we were declared Champions! With the championship sealed came the play-off semi-final against Southend High School to decide which team is promoted to Division 1. After a gruelling contest dominated by us, the game ended 0-0. With still no goals after a full 120 minutes of play, the match headed to penalties. Just one miss by us ended the shoot-out 4-5 and sadly we were defeated. Still, a great campaign this year by all and hopefully more success will follow next season.
