What is autism?Autism is a neurobiologicaldisorder that affects aperson’s ability tocommunicate, formrelationships with others,and respond appropriatelyto their environment. Somepeople with autism arerelatively high-functioning.Others appear mentallychallenged and havealmost no language skills.Most individuals withautism continue to growand change over time.The majority of adultchildren with autism needlifelong teaching andreinforcement of skills.

Friends of Autistic People (FAP)is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Since its founding over 10years ago, FAP has advocated for the needs of the entirespectrum of grown children with autism who have aged out ofthe school system and have since become invisible to thecommunity. FAP is a pioneer in raising awareness about theservices needed for adults with autism and advocating socialand legislative changes on local, state, and federal levels.

Why a farm?Once children with autism turn 21 virtually all services that wereprovided to them as children are cut off. Most grown childrenwith autism thrive on outdoor activities, hiking, horticulture,riding therapy and working with animals. The Farm Living andLearning Academy Village will provide continued education andcombine boarding and day programs that include academic,vocational and life skills education.

What will the farm look like?The Farm Living and Learning Academy Village will be an organic farm. It willsupport 20 resident student farmers and 20-30 day program participants. Thefarm will have residential homes, instructional and administrative buildings, agreenhouse complex, a barn and farm stands. Farming of herbs, vegetables andflowers will be taught. Students will learn crafts and plant-to-table foodpreparation. Condemned horses and other animals that are offered a sanctuarywill allow the residents to groom and bond with them.

An ideal place for grown children with autism!The village life will offer a place for living and learning in anextended family. The Farm Living and Learning AcademyVillage will offer proven autism therapies. Each person withautism will have an individually designed residential, workand leisure plan that will teach essential life and work skillsand enhance the resident’s self esteem.
