We call Chaparral Trail Another Farmersville’s Treasure….
It all begins at the Audie L. Murphy Trail Head at the historic Onion Shed in Farmersville. The trail was developed for the purpose of hiking, biking, walking, jogging, geocaching, sight seeing and horseback riding. Enjoy a 10 mile round trip on this multi-use paved trail or travel as far as 132 miles to New Boston on this secured and primitive trail which was previously used as a railroad right-of way. There is ample parking, a covered pavilion with picnic tables and restroom facilities all within walking distance of downtown Farmersville. See full trail map online.
The Chaparral Trail is part of the Northeast Texas Trail Coalition (NETT) and when completed it will be the longest Hike/Bike and Equestrian Trail in Texas and the 4th longest in the USA. The NETT is the product of the commitment and partnership among local and statewide trail advocates, and county, state and federal government agencies. The NETT Coalition mission has been “re-cycling” an invaluable rail banked corridor into pedestrian, bicycle, and equestrian trails for moving people through the picturesque countryside of Northeast Texas. This trail traverses from Farmersville through 19 rural towns and 7 counties to New Boston linking population centers, community facilities, work places, neighborhoods, schools, recreation areas, open space and cultural/historical areas.
The City of Farmersville proudly owns and maintains 5.2 miles along the trail to the Hunt County Line. For More Info about amenities, campsites and articles visit these websites: www.farmersvilletx.com

We Are A Texas Treasure—
Our treasurers include many historical markers, unique shops and diverse and delicious restaurants, and outdoor activities including hiking and bike trails, parks and beautiful lakes just a short drive away. If Farmersville is, as the cities motto so aptly states, “…a Texas Treasure”, then Downtown is most certainly a jewel in its crown. Even more treasurers are found on the square with a quaint café, antique stores, gift, clothing, jewelry stores, and yarn shops—you will be amazed to find these treasures.

There is every good reason to live, work, play and enjoy life in Farmersville.
Located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and State Highway 78, Farmersville rests in eastern Collin County. As homesteaders began to settle in this area in the 1800’s, they quickly discovered the rich, fertile, black land. The first cotton seed was planted in a nine acre plot in 1870 by Howard Crawford. That crop was so successful that Mr. Crawford shared his cottonseed with neighbors. As a result of his sharing, Farmersville had become the center of the cotton producing area in 1900. In that year, 12,000 bales of cotton were sold from the wagons on the square. By 1910 there were six cotton gins operating in Farmersville.
Around 1857, citizens began the process of naming their settlement, and chose the name Farmersville as suggested by Johnny Hendrex, since that was the occupation of
most people in the area. After many years, even though cotton was king, Mr. A.A. Reagan planted 13 acres of onions in 1925. He harvested a good crop, and “East Collin Sweets” soon took over the economy of the town. One thousand carloads of onions were
shipped annually. The railroad built eight onion sheds in Farmersville, for storing and distribution of onion crops. In 1935, the first “Onion Festival” was held and the Governor of Texas, James W. Allred, was the speaker on the downtown square. Thirty thousand people attended the two-day event.
The weekly local newspaper, The Farmersville Times, was founded in 1885 and is the oldest newspaper in Collin County. Today it continues to provide news. First National Bank, operating today as Independent Bank, was established in 1885.
Growing steadily as a part of a rapidly expanding Collin County, Farmersville is a charter member city of the North Texas Municipal Water District and owner of its own electrical system. As of 2010, the population was numbered at 3301. The school district educates over 1500 students on four campuses.
During the month of June, near his birthday, Farmersville honors Audie Murphy, as well as area veterans on “Audie Murphy Day.” When he enlisted in the U.S. Army, Audie used his sister’s Farmersville address as his own. He later became the most
decorated soldier of World War II. Upon returning from military service in 1945, Audie Murphy walked the streets of Farmersville with Life magazine reporters, unveiling this Texas Treasure; Farmersville.
—Debra Helmberger
Debra wrote this story and photographed many of the pictures used in our Chamber publications.
As with any hidden treasure, we are big enough to provide the perfect lifestyle by being small
enough to meet your needs.
Audie Leon Murphy
the most decorated WWII hero
Audie was born into a family of twelve children in Kingston, Texas. He grew up in Texas around Farmersville with a father who came in and out of his life until he eventually deserted the family. Audie dropped out of school working odd jobs to help the family. His mother, whom he loved, died in 1941 one year after his father left, when he was only sixteen . Soon after that with falsified documents he entered the military. That unlikely warrior didn’t take long to become the most decorated WWII hero. In June 1945 Murphy returned a national hero to Farmersville. That summer Life Magazine met him here to record the story of his life. Later his story caught the attention of actor James Cagney who beckoned him to Hollywood. Stardom finaly came when Murphy and his Texas friend McClure and wrote a gripping but classic wartime memoir. Originally published in 1949, To Hell and Back was a bestseller for fourteen weeks and later became a major motion picture starring Audie Murphy as himself.
Murphy struggled with families problems, his mother’s death, and post traumatic stress. He died in an airplane crash in Virginia in 1971 when he was only 46 years old.
Audie Murphy, the most decorated war hero won 33 international awards for service in WWII, all before his 21st birthday. And in Farmersville, October 29, 2013, Texas Governor Rick Perry posthumously presented the Legislative Medal of Honor which is the highest military decoration that can be awarded to a
member of the Texas Military Forces. He has also been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.

THE BAIN-HONAKER HOUSE—This historic home at 108 College Street is an important part of Farmersville’s history. Built in 1865 by Anna Melissa Bain, the house is a lovely wooden structure of Victorian design, almost in near-original condition. The Bain-Honaker House serves as a facility for cultural and social events, and educational programs. A collection of vintage documents, newspapers,
and photographs are displayed at the House. RECORDED TEXAS HISTORIC LANDMARK, 1996 -
