End of year – new horizonsEvery time we approach another year’s end, I, like many others, start to look ahead and make new plans for the new year coming. This for me is a very possitive thing to do. After all, nothing bad has happened to de-rail these great new plans! – “no obstacles are in my way”, as the song goes.

This year, we worked very hard to evolve Farming Scotland Magazine, and indeed, to protect the brand (but that is another story!). Beginning to be sold in leading supermarkets has certainly helped our profile somewhat – though there is still a long way to go, we are on the right road.

We then saw the magazine take a great leap forward when we opted for the ‘perfect bound’ and laminated finish, giving the title a ‘coffee table’ quailty feel. Certainly, we are now a magazine that you will be able to buy and keep to re-visit, and that my friends is a very powerful marketing tool for this magazine.

So, with 2013 now in full view, I will promise you this. Farming Scotland Magazine will continue to grow in the coming twelve months and we will always be here to support anyone with the best interests of Scottish agriculture at their core.

I also hope to meet some of you at Agriscot very soon too. And when the year turns, may you all have a great time with your friends and families, and of course a more prosperous new year.

Suzuki KingQuad 400 ManualThe Suzuki KingQuad 400 Manual is a stand out model in the mid-size ATV class. It offers a highly comfortable and practical ride with a sporty feel and an aggressive look.

As with all Suzuki ATVs, the KingQuad 400 Manual boasts exceptional build quality, power and performance. As you’d expect, it features a high/low range gear box, multi-function digital display and twin-shock suspension, plus lots more.

The KingQuad 400 Manual features Suzuki’s efficient fuel injection system so you can count on impressive fuel

economy and great reliability. The 32mm throttle body and cylinder head work to deliver smooth power and torque for everything from creeping around the paddock to charging across fields.

The 376cc engine delivers plenty of power for most farm, forestry, estate and equestrian work.

Suzuki is committed to ensuring the safety of all its customers so offers free EASI training to customers purchasing a Suzuki ATV from any authorised Suzuki dealer. In addition to this, all Suzuki ATVs come with a full 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Suzuki is currently running some exciting offers for their customers to take advantage of, including a free branded

workwear kit for any customers that buy a new Suzuki Utility ATV between now and the end of March 2013.

In addition to this, the Courtesy ATV campaign offers customers the use of a new Suzuki ATV when any utility ATV is taken to an authorised dealer for service or repair work, regardless of the make or model.

Farr – the new boy on the blockFor what is a newer name to the UK ATV and UTV market, Farr’s fortunes have waxed, waned and seemingly regenerated within a short period of time, irrespective of the UK importer’s claim to be one of the largest independents in the business.

Where Farr does win out is in the total package. Numerous preconceived extras are part and parcel of Farr’s standard offering which, in addition to its pricing structure, make it an increasingly attractive proposition for those looking to save money and maximise their financial outlay.

Now before the comment arises, thanks to the EU, nomenclatures have changed. What was a quad is now an ATV or All Terrain Vehicle while what was an ATV now becomes a UTV or Utility Terrain Vehicle. In spite of this change imposed by officialdom however, certain manufacturers still use the term quad in their product names.

The Farr 700EFI is therefore a UTV or what was once referred to as a side-by-side

ATV. The reason the 700EFI is finding favour is that it sits neatly within the centre of Farr’s UTV range incorporating many of the out and out basic functions and the practicality of the lesser 400 model along with the comfort and ease of use associated with the recreational usage based 800EFI Sport.

Road legal. The 700EFI leaves the factory fully road legal. Its 12v 21W lighting, indicators and controls are homologated to UK road specifications, providing the dealer processes all the relevant

paperwork. All the customer has to do, apart from selecting their chosen colour of green, red or camo, is drive it home.

The Kubota RTV1140Kubota is renowned for producing highly productive RTV vehicles, and the new RTV1140 is no different. Building on the lively performance, rugged build and renowned reliability of the current two-seater RTV900, this new model offers the versatility of a fold-away second bench seat to carry two extra

passengers – a welcome feature for utility ATV users. Kubota ATV’s are the only utility vehicles that have Variable HST transmission as standard, giving outstanding climbing ability, as well as dynamic braking for safer descent.

Aimed at farms and estates, when the need arises to carry passengers, guns and dogs, it takes just a couple of minutes to convert the vehicle. Load capacity is not compromised as the unit has one of the biggest cargo boxes available of any four-seater – even larger if used

as a two-seater. The RTV1140’s independent strut front suspension and semi-independent de Dion axle design at the rear provides a comfortable ride and sure-footed performance while coping with farm and forest tracks, fields or wet and muddy winter conditions.

Over previous models, this new unit has a more powerful Kubota engine, plus an uprated version of the unique VHT hydrostatic transmission. Power is provided by a mid-mounted 25hp water cooled 3 cylinder Kubota diesel engine.

Arctic Cat Super Duty ATVAn industry leader in the Diesel market since 2008, the Arctic Cat Super Duty Diesel ATV has a 686 cc twin cylinder, SOHC diesel engine, providing a 50% greater fuel consumption over a conventional petrol engine and provides loads of low-end torque.

An all-encompassed electronic 2WD/4WD/Differential Lock switch on the right hand control makes going in/out of 4WD or Diff Lock an easier process.

Start-In-Gear ability and single lever hand operated hydraulic disc brakes.

RENEWABLEENERGY

All sectors are going to be expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from routine activities. For farmers, increasing farm efficiency can be a cost effective way to achieve these emission reductions, whilst also benefitting the farm business.

Over the past two years Dumfries and Galloway dairy farmers Ross and Lee Paton at Torr Farm have volunteered as one of four focus farms, trialling various measures that will reduce their carbon footprint, save them money and benefit the farm business.

Torr is a 389 hectare organic dairy farm located on the Solway coast about 20 miles west of Dumfries. The business has 180 dairy cows, mainly Holstein-Friesian and Montbelliarde, along with a few Ayrshire and Norwegian Red. The business retains all of the offspring from the dairy herd, either for breeding or for selling as forward stores. Of the total land area approximately 100 hectares are woodland or rough grazing, 80 hectares are used for growing cereals and the rest is sown to grass for grazing and silage.

Energy and fuel use on the farm is one of the areas that Ross and Lee have been working with SAC to reduce. A whole farm energy audit was firstly undertaken, this provided baseline information about energy use on the farm

and highlighted opportunities where reductions could be made. Measures to date that Ross and Lee have implemented include: i) recording fuel use per tractor and activity, allowing the efficiency of vehicles and operations to be assessed; ii) installed a smart meter at the main incoming supply point, allowing inefficient equipment and activities to be identified; iii) lagged hot water pipes, increasing insulation of the pipes and hot water tanks has minimised heat loss; iv) reduced hot water circulation cleaning in the dairy from twice a day to once a day and v) installed a new variable speed milk pump. The financial benefits from electricity savings in the parlour are still being assessed, but savings from the new milk pump alone are expected to be around £5,500 over 10 years.

Assessments of the benefits of all the measures implemented on Torr are on-going and will be quantified in terms of carbon and cash savings.

SAC Consulting are working with a number of farmers in Scotland to look at ways farm businesses can benefit from the climate change agenda as part of the Scottish Government funded Farming for a Better Climate initiative.

Dairy farm improves energy efficiency

It is never too early to consider how you are going to maximise the price of the electricity generated by your renewable project.

It is not widely appreciated that there are a range of possible purchasers for the power your scheme gemerates depending on the size of that scheme.

Choosing to involve an independent agent to negotiate the terms of your Power Purchase Agreement is an important step in ensuring the best value of your project. You can ensure a competetive revenue stream not only for the power generated but also in respect of the other tradable benefits.

It is too late to start considering this once your scheme is built and ready to start exporting power.Generators should start to think about their options for selling power as early as possible post-planning, and well ahead of any financial close with a lender, who will wish to influence the type and structure of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) .There are independent agents who offer PPA’s to independent renewable generators, including bespoke contracts to secure project finance.

Do you need an Exit for initial Finance?

If you are financing a project yourself or are a developer trying to finance projects there may come a time when you want to replace the original project or venture capital finance

involved in your project with longer term debt finance. That can be hard to come by.

Increasingly a number of projects are being syndicated together to make a package of a size that becomes attractive to a wider range of long term debt providers and the wider the range of providers the better exit deal can be negotiated for the initial finance locked into the project.

We are aware of moves to syndicate projects across borders so that the final, syndicated scheme might include projects from Scotland, France and Germany , for example, and would be attractive to a wide range of financial institutions.

What does all this mean? You need advice to ensure

that you get the best value from your scheme, which, as well as ensuring the maximum income over the lifetime of the scheme will also enhance its capital value if you are looking to sell the scheme on.

For more mature sizeable schemes with lockedin finance that needs to be replaced you should consider syndication to maximise the return.

Coming up in this column look out for information on the latest turbines coming to the market.

Independent, resourceful and entrepreneurially minded, Shetlanders have always had a talent for diversification and an ability to weather the storm, both in a meteorological and economic sense. And nor do they see themselves as isolated, despite the fact the islands are closer to Bergen in Norway than they are to Edinburgh. This is a lively, industrious and thriving community, one that thinks big and likes a challenge.

If you were looking for a business that epitomises the can-do ethos of the Shetland islanders, then Garriock Bros. Ltd would seem to fit the bill perfectly.

Founded in 1975 as a small family joinery firm, Garriock Bros. Ltd has steadily grown into one of the largest privately owned companies in Shetland. Arguably, it’s also one of the most diverse businesses in Scotland, providing a mind-

Headquartered in the Shetland capital of Lerwick, Garriock Bros. Ltd now has depots in Orkney, Edinburgh and Coventry, employing over 120 people across its four bases and seven different divisions.

“We’ve always looked out for potential new opportunities, but the development of the company has been a gradual and carefully considered process,” says managing director George Garriock, who started the company with his brother. “Whilst the services we now offer are indeed diverse, our business philosophy remains the same across all our divisions. Whatever we do, we try to do it to a very high standard and always strive to build and

maintain good, long lasting relationships with our customers. That’ll never change, regardless of how much we expand and diversify.”

It was a move into plant hire that really set the wheels in motion for Garriock Bros. Ltd. In 1994 the company bought over what was the Hewden Plant Hire depot in Shetland, developing the business into the biggest plant and equipment hirer in the islands. Now with depots in Lerwick - managed by regional director John Strmsek, who has an extensive knowledge of plant and equipment - and Brae, managed by depot manager, Robin Leslie, Garriock Bros. Ltd Plant Hire has a vast range of machinery available to

the commercial and domestic markets, all of it maintained to the highest standards.

The company also operates a large retail facility in Lerwick, supplying more than 10,000 product lines to compliment its hire equipment.

“Plant hire was a logical move for us,” explains George. “As craftsmen involved in the construction industry, we felt there was a need to boost the range and quality of the equipment that was available locally. Being an island community, it’s extremely important that trade and DIY customers have quick access to the equipment they need. Having to wait until items can be delivered from the mainland

costs time and money and we’ve always believed island firms shouldn’t be disadvantaged in this way. It was very much a sector we were confident we could improve and develop to the benefit of the community here.”

Whilst building up its hugely successful plant hire operation in Shetland, Garriock Bros. Ltd also began developing a sizeable plant sales business in the islands and can now supply an extensive range of plant and machinery, including excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, generators and trailers, amongst many other items.

Many companies operating in the more remote Scottish islands are content to remain within their geographical boundaries, serving easily

identifiable, self-contained markets and avoiding the logistical and economic challenges of expanding beyond home shores. But for Garriock Bros. Ltd the desire to seek out new markets further afield has always been a driving force in what is an ambitious, energetic and forward looking company.

It was in 1986 that Garriock Bros. Ltd made its first foray beyond Shetland, seizing the opportunity to buy a tool hire business in neighbouring Orkney.

Under the wing of Garriock Bros Ltd, Orkney Tool Hire - managed by highly experienced regional director David Campbell - has become the major tool and equipment hire company in the islands, with John Strmsek, Regional Director

well over 600 items of plant and 10,000 products in stock at its shop on the Hatston Industrial Estate, near Kirkwall. The business also supplies marine equipment, including Yamaha outboards, navigation devices, and a variety of boats and small craft.

“Shetland and Orkney are very similar communities,” says George. “There are several businesses that operate across both island groups, so expanding into Orkney was a relatively straightforward task for us. We were already well known to a lot of people in Orkney and our Orcadian customers were quick to recognise our commitment to the new venture. They’re every bit as discerning as folk in Shetland and appreciate good service. We’ve never looked back since.”

Expanding into a neighbouring island community is one thing. Moving into the highly competitive mainland market is a much tougher proposition, but it’s a challenge Garriock Bros. Ltd rose to in 2002 when the company took over a major contract crushing operation in Midlothian.

“It was a big step for us, but one we felt 100 per cent confident in taking,” reflects George. “We had many years of heavy plant experience under our belts, the right team of people in place and the determination to make it work.”

And make it work they did. Garriock Bros. Ltd’s Edinburgh division, based at the Newbridge Industrial Estate and managed by regional director Michael Broe - who has an extensive knowledge of the crushing industry - is absolutely

flourishing and firmly established as a key player in the Scottish aggregate and heavy plant hire industry. Three years after launching the Midlothian operation, Garriock Bros. Ltd became the official Scottish distributor of Metso Minerals quarrying and recycling equipment – a testament to the Shetland firm’s professionalism and commitment to customer service.

The company is also recognised internationally as a supplier of high quality used Metso crushing and screening equipment worldwide, with machines being sold to satisfied clients as far afield as Africa, Malaysia and Australia.

Orkney was again the focus for Garriock Bros. Ltd’s next venture - the 2004 purchase of a vehicle MOT and servicing garage in Kirkwall, now trading as Orkney Motors. Expansion of the Orkney branch has continued apace, with the firm also operating the Kirkwall based car and van hire firm, Drive Orkney.

The Shetland branch of Garriock Bros. Ltd certainly hasn’t remained static amidst all this expansion and diversification away from home. Far from it. In 2007 the company bought Shetland based Nicolson Plant Ltd from administrators. The purchase, which also included haulage and transport elements and the Sullom Mine Quarry, greatly expanded Garriock Bros. Ltd’s civil engineering and plant hire capabilities in the islands.

Two years later, Garriock Bros. Ltd acquired Hanson’s two quarries, block plant and ready mix plant in Shetland, further

boosting its position as a major player in the local construction industry.

The firm now undertakes civil engineering and contracting works up to £5M in value, tackling everything from surfacing work, road building, highways maintenance and large ground works projects, to underground service provision, building and housing maintenance, fencing, landscaping and steel cladding of buildings. Garriock Bros. Ltd’s civil engineering and contracting works are overseen by company director Arthur Robertson, whose previous experience as a site manager and planning engineer makes him well placed to manage

projects and ensure they are completed to budget and on time. Works completed under Arthur’s direction include a £5m contract to build a major waste management facility at Gremista, near Lerwick. Current projects include the construction of buildings for a salmon hatchery in Girlsta, Shetland and building works for a new hotel in Brae, Shetland.

Garriock Bros. Ltd’s extensive Shetland portfolio also includes The Glass Centre, which manufactures double and triple glazed units to order, and The Window Centre, making uPVC windows, doors, conservatories and curtain walling. In addition, the company is the sole Scottish

agent for the Norwegian Fjogstad Houses brand, homes well suited to the vagaries of the Northern Isles climate.

Agriculture, a vital local industry in Shetland, has naturally been a focus for Garriock Bros. Ltd over the years. The firm’s commitment to its agricultural customers goes further than purely selling new machines though, with the company providing unrivalled product support and servicing via a team of fully trained, locally based engineers.

An important factor in the successful development of Garriock Bros. Ltd’s agricultural division has been its drive to supply only the highest quality equipment to farmers working in Shetland’s harsh environment. Suzuki, Ifor Williams, Krone, Fleming, Teagle, Logic and Indespension Trailers are just a

few of the top brands stocked and maintained by the firm. Agricultural customers in Orkney, where farming is the most important local industry, also benefit from Garriock Bros. Ltd’s expertise and unrivalled service and enjoy access to the same extensive product range as farmers in Shetland.

As island communities, Orkney and Shetland have large and extremely busy marine sectors, which rely heavily on local suppliers. Garriock Bros. Ltd’s Shetland and Orkney branches provide a vital service to fishermen, fish farmers, mariners and boat owners in the islands, stocking and supplying essential equipment and products, such as marine trailers, outboards, boats and small craft, as well as a wide range of marine oils and bearings. fully trained and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to provide advice and support to customers, with high quality servicing also on offer. Given the nature of the seas around Orkney and Shetland this expertise is absolutely vital and Garriock Bros. Ltd is proud to have built up a strong reputation as a reliable supplier amongst its many marine customers in the Northern Isles.

You might think such an extensive portfolio of businesses in Scotland would be enough to keep even the keenest of

businessmen satisfied, but the rise of Garriock Bros. Ltd shows no sign of slowing down. In a major development last year, the company opened a depot in Coventry, becoming the official dealer for Metso Minerals in England and Wales, as well as Scotland.

That this expansion south of the border has taken place during a recession is testament to the commitment of the firm’s highly motivated workforce and the business acumen of George Garriock and his team of directors.

“You have to work very hard at it, put the time in, and be prepared to knock on doors and offer a good service,” says George, who is completely unfazed by the challenges of operating a successful business so far from home. “People will respond to that and if you give a good service they’ll be back again. We’re very proud to have done multiple deals with companies over a lot of years.”

“Granted, these are tough times for businesses, but the opportunities are still out there if you have the vision and desire to seize them,” adds George. “We’ve always tried to keep the momentum going, while never losing sight of our core values of customer care and quality. But businesses are only as good as the people working for them

and we have a fantastic team at Garriock Bros. Ltd, all of whom are fully committed to making everything we do a success.”

So, where next for Garriock Bros. Ltd? George’s energy and appetite for further strengthening

the business is seemingly boundless and he’s open about his desire to identify further

opportunities for the company, both in Scotland and England. Those opportunities might be in existing areas of expertise for the company, or in an entirely new sector. Either way, there’s little doubt the Garriock Bros. Ltd philosophy and traditional commitment to customer service and satisfaction will spell success.

“We are going to expand and might look at the Inverness or Newcastle areas, filling in the blank spots in the country we don’t cover,“ reveals George, who likens the different elements of his company to a jigsaw that all fits together perfectly. “It’s about trying to seek out markets other people are not covering very well and serving them on our own,

rather than copying what anyone else is doing.”

Talking to George Garriock, it’s very clear that his values and business philosophy have much to do with his native land, where professional reputations are built on trust, reliability and a good, old-fashioned commitment to customer service.

“We’re very proud to be a Shetland company, making its mark nationally,” he says. “It’s very important to us and we never forget where we come from.”

First Claas Barony Students GraduateThe first group of Apprentices to complete the Claas Apprentice programme at Barony College near Dumfries recently graduated at a ceremony held at the college. Their achievement was witnessed by their friends, family and Claas and dealer representatives, together with the most recently recruited apprentices who joined the Scheme in August and will continue in the footsteps of the graduates.

The Scheme at Barony College arose from the request from dealers based in Scotland and the North of England to replicate the success of the Scheme at Reaseheath College in Cheshire. In 2008 Claas UK made the decision to extend the Scheme and run a parallel course in the North.

Claas is still the only major land based manufacturer to offer a specific apprenticeship course based in Scotland. Demand for this course has been consistently evident not only from Claas

dealers in Scotland and Northern England, but now also in Ireland.

Over the four years that they have attended Barony College, this successful group, who are drawn from Claas

dealers Rickerby and Sellars, have been studying towards a National Diploma in Land Based Technology and advanced technical and industry certificates introduced by Claas.

Student Sheep Project Heads the Market – Success

for Easycares from SRUC Barony

A visit to Borderway Market in Carlisle proved lucrative for a student team from the Barony Campus of SRUC, Scotland’s Rural College. Attending the annual sale of Easycare sheep they made two top prices for their breeding females and the day’s second highest call in the males.

The Easycare flock at Barony, near Dumfries, was established in 2010 supported by and in conjunction with Asda. The original group of 60 ewes was bought from the breed’s Anglesey-based developer Iolo Owen and used to investigate the alternative management options available in the modern sheep industry.

Easy Care is a revolutionary breed requiring minimal shepherding and veterinary care and is well established in Britain. It does not need shearing and

offers excellent meat yields and lambing crops. The Easy Care Sheep Society was formed to promote the breed and to ensure its continued development.

Success for the Barony flock began early. The first lamb crop, in spring 2011, produced the top-priced ram lamb at the Carlisle sale of 500 guineas. This year the shearling ram, from the flocks Ireby Hall sire commanded 550gns, selling to Mr Brian Atkinson of Scratchmere Scar, Plumpton. Mr Atkinson’s son, Jake, who was part of the Barony student group, commented that the family’s new purchase was “a fine example of the breed, who stood well and was well presented.”

DIET FEEDERS

The latest introduction to the Strautmann range of Mixer wagons is the ‘L’ series

The machine is a one-auger mixer which is available in six different sizes from 7.5 to 12.5m!.

Its exceptional feature is its low overall height which, depending on the machine model, is up to 30cm lower than that of the conventional vertical fodder mixing wagons equipped with one

mixing auger.All Verti-Mix-L models are

equipped with a special axle which, in contrast to

conventional designs, is not mounted underneath the mixing container, but is located behind the mixing container. Thus, the machine height is reduced by up to 30cm depending on the machine model.

One consequence is a more favourable charging height, such that even smaller front-loader tractors or yard loaders can be used for the charging procedure. Another consequence is a positive influence of the low overall height on the machine height.

Equipped with the appropriate tyres, the smallest Verti-Mix-L model with a

capacity of 7.5m! is already available from a height of 1.98m, thus meeting the particular demands of growing

enterprises which despite their growth are still operating even in old buildings with low stable overhead clearance.

A look at seven makes on the market today

DIET FEEDERS

The Verti-Mix-L series is available in 6 different sizes from 7.5 to 12.5m!. In particular the two largest versions with a capacity of 11 and 12.5m!

respectively are, given a comparable height, a low-cost alternative to the similarly compact two-auger vertical mixers offering a comparable volume.

For easy hitching and unhitching, all Verti-Mix-L standard models are equipped with a hydraulic supporting leg. Depending on the customer’s needs, a discharge door is available each on the right-hand and left-hand side and in the rear centre, side discharge conveyors of different lengths being of course available for the side doors as well.

The Verti-Mix-L series will be available from RECO dealers now.

But Fiber Tech is only part of the good news story associated with the new Redrock feeding systems.

Frank Flynn again: “We are also offering our clients customised nutritional advice in terms of diet formulation, in tandem with a TMR Tracker system. This provides farmers with a total solution in terms of managing feed costs and ensuring optimal performance from the various animals within specific groups.”

He added: “The tracker system is fully compatible with all herd or farm record systems. At its most basic level it will serve to check the programmed

ration against that which is actually fed out. The system will also calculate and register daily feed costs, dry matter intakes and daily refusals. “The new system also provides an integrated tracker function for online data exchange with nutritionists and advisors.

“In essence, the TMR Tracker is an integrated management system, allowing complete on-line data exchange between the farmer and his Redrock nutritionist.

“It can also be used to monitor all aspects of the feeding operation.”

And, of course, the new feeding systems also come with

the renowned Redrock reputation for reliability and robustness. Key technical features on the new Fiber Tech feeders include: a high feed discharge rate; easy attachment to the tractor and an automatic lubrication system;

Frank Flynn continued:“Our new feeders provide

individual clients with the bespoke feeding systems they require for their businesses.

Electronic feed management system for Hi-Spec feedersThe Hi-Spec Vertical Auger Feeder comprises a total of eight models with either a single or twin auger, and with capacities ranging from 10m3 up to 24m3. The augers are centrally located in order to provide a thorough mixing and chopping action and are fitted with self-sharpening chopping knives, mounted on

steel brackets, that constantly chop the feed material during the mixing process.

A particular feature of the Hi-Spec Vertical mixer range is the wide range of discharge door location options. On single rotor machines there are a total of seven door options on the front, side or rear of the mixer, whilst there are nine door options on the twin auger version.

In addition to the standard chute, the Vertical Auger Feeder on display at the Highland will feature the new VHD (Variable Height Discharge) Conveyor that is now available as an option.

The VHD Conveyor avoids the need for an expensive elevator and features a modular belt system that can be offset to either side of the machine. Available for either single or twin tub models, the discharge height can be altered on-the-move over a range from 0.58m up to 1.40m. The conveyor itself is manufactured using heavy duty nylon links, similar to those used on potato machinery, in order to provide optimum reliability and low wear.

MUCK SPREADERS

Preparing the land for the new season ahead

K-Two Sales - Duo Mk5 SpreadersWith the increasing demand from farmers and contractors for more efficient and accurate spreading of manures and by-products, K-Two have further developed the Duo range of spreaders to meet these challenges. The new range, released in 2011, has 6 models, with capacities from 6 to 14 tonnes using the proven twin vertical beater design and single axle construction.

The new Mk5 range is based around a new monocoque body which not only gives a 12% increased volumetric capacity over the previous models, but allows larger wheels to be fitted without affecting the overall width of the machine. With a single pole drawbar, larger flared sides and a full height slurry door this not only improves manoeuvrability, but aids loading and maximises capacity. Four 14mm marine floor chains with closely spaced slats ensure a positive discharge, with infinitely variable speed control to regulate the application rate. Combine this feature with the weigh cell option and both instantaneous and average application rates can be regulated and recorded for precision spreading.

A new open flighted dynamically balanced rotor spins at a faster 417rpm, giving a wider, finer spread pattern. The high tensile open flights permit alternative spreading paddles to be fitted, and combined with a redesigned lower spinner, dramatically improves the spreading of high water content manures, with reversible beater teeth for an extended operating life.

Rolland’s new discRolland have added a new style disc to their TCE spinning deck range, this comes with four deflectors and a redesigned vane which gives a more even spread pattern and a longer life.

The TCE beater frame which is removable is available on 10t, 12t, 14t, 15t, 17t, 19t single axle Rolltwin models aswell as the Rollmax tandem axle range which goes up to 24t, very popular with compost spreading where large volume with little weight is needed. The massive increase in fertiliser prices have greatly improved demand for the TCE spinning deck where 24m tramlines can be followed to top dress growing crops with poultry manure and well rotted yard

muck. The TCE can also be used for making windrows which enables the farmer to mix different manures and acclerate the rotting process to be able to make a more timely application of spreading.

Rolland have been building manure spreader’s with spinning deck since 1972 so could be considered pioneers in their field. The company is a French family run business which first started in 1946 with wooden sided spreaders, they have now evolved into an ultra modern factory with 6 acres of buildings where all machines are electroplated and powder coated. Please ring Alex Clothier UK Sales manager 07881503731 for any further enquiries.

Thirty years from Harry WestHarry West Prees Ltd has been producing the Dual spreader for 30 years and the latest addition to our range is our 3000 gallon Harry West Dual Spreader will accommodate all types of farm yard manure.

With a feed out rotor speed of 508 rpm with 540rpm input it insures an even spread width of up to 21m. This machine is fitted with 650/65 x 30.5R tyres as standard which ensures low ground pressure large rolling radius. Coupled with the low power requirement of the drive and large capacity makes this machine very economical to use on the larger farms and for long distance work.

This model is fitted with anti splash guards as standard. The retail price is £28,550

MUCK SPREADERSso important as it is today. With this in mind GT Bunning and sons Ltd have dedicated all of their manufacturing capacity and product development to their increasingly popular Lowlander range of rear discharge spreaders. The Lowlander range was first introduced in 1991 and joined the Highlander range which was introduced in 1986. The Highlander has today been

replaced by the Lowlander Widebody range which spans from 18 to 35 tonne capacities.

Although today’s range of models are predominantly ordered with twin vertical augers Bunnings are seeing a

materials spread being cattle and pig manure or compost.

A detachable spinner deck can be specified for vertical auger machines, this option has two 1.1 metre diameter spinning discs and can be taken on or off in under 5 minutes, it is best suited to chicken manure and other products to be spread at wider and lower application rates. Another alternative for vertical auger spreaders is the new simple canopy, this hooks on to the rear of the machine and deflects material down onto the bottom blades of the augers, ideal for spreading products like broiler litter and lime. The most effective and increasingly popular variation for wider spread patterns is Bunnings new HBD design.

Samson goes bigSamson are one of the largest producers of manure and slurry handling equipment in Europe they have been producing manure spreaders for over 65 years and today have some of the most technically advanced machines available in Europe.

They introduced the first twin vertical rear discharge spreader into the UK in 1988 in the form of the Samson 9thm manure spreader Many of these early machines are still working today some 20 years later In this time the Samson concept has been replicated by many other manufactures but never bettered for quality and reliability.

Samson produce manure spreaders from 9m3 to 21 m3

Conor side spreadersThe Conor side spreader is one of the strongest and most durable on the market today. It is built to operate in the most demanding of conditions and can handle a wide range of manure from solid to slurry. Conor side spreaders come in 4 models , the 400, 750, 900 and 1000.

Heavy duty bearings are used and an 150mm balanced heavy wall rotor ensure maximum strength and balanced unloading. A protective timber rail is used to prevent loading damage and all models come with heavy duty keyed sprockets, case hardened flails and EN8 splined shafts and all models are finished with high quality 2 pack paint. All models except the 400 come with a hydraulic lid and lights as standard.

Strautmann rangeRECO offer a series of Muck Spreaders from the Strautmann range. Available in capacities between 10.5 and 20m!, with two horizontal beaters and two spreading discs, the Strautmann range is suitable for spreading a wide range of material, including lime. The spreaders feature a low empty weight for high rated loads, which simultaneously offers excellent strength and stability. The BE range features a fully galvanized body and frame which offers a high degree of protection against corrosion, and thus longer life and higher second hand value.

MUCK SPREADERSReliability, Strength and Ease of Use are all ensured through the high specification of the Titan range which has seen the machines gain popularity with farmers and contractors alike.

All models in the Titan range are well proportioned to achieve high stability, manoeuvrability, as well as good ground clearance whilst loading remains easy thanks to the low height of the sides. Most importantly all models achieve a high output through the heavy duty driveline, whilst the large diameter overlapping beaters provide a consistently fine and wide spread pattern.

The spreaders are suitable for all types of manure, sewage and compost. The general purpose vertical beaters supplied as standard have reversible hardened tips and swinging arms at the bases, providing good tolerance to foreign objects.

In 2013 Teagle will launch complimentary 6, 8 and 9 cubic metre models, featuring many of the advantages found in the larger models, but which are ideally suited to lower horsepower tractors or farms where access is tight.

Quality is inherent in the machines throughout their design and production. Seams are continuously welded or sealed to prevent corrosion and machines are shot blasted prior to painting for superior adhesion. Options include Electric Control of the

bed chain, Sprung Drawbar, Greedy Boards, Wide Angle PTO, and various Oversize Wheels.

Prices start at around £17,500 for a 10m3 Titan with a slurry gate and standard wheels.
