    FLC In Action

Beginning March 16, and for the nextfive Wednesday nights, the 7pmLenten service will once again featurethe contemplative music and liturgy of the Holden Evening Prayer Service.Within that setting, the message eachweek will be offered in drama formaround the question of who, if anyone,is beyond forgiveness ? Using acourtroom scene where Judas is on trialfor betraying Jesus, we will explore themysterious tension between Godsjudgment and Gods mercy. Eachweek, Biblical characters will take thestand to testify about theirunderstanding of Jesus and what hislife, death and resurrection tells usabout that compelling question. As thistrial unfolds, you wont want to miss a

    single week!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? Weare in need of actors for these dramapresentations. Most of the parts will befor a single week, and parts will notneed to be memorized. However, personal preparation and a shortrehearsal for each week will benecessary. If you would like to helpout, please contact Pastor Phil (Phone:651-463-4100 Ext 203 / Email:[email protected].)

A short meeting to set the stage forall interested participants will be heldafter the second service (@ 11:45) onSunday morning, March 6, in thesanctuary.

By the time you get this issue of the newsletter, a Celebrating our

History Timeline will be front and center in the Gathering Area. For a week or two, along with a FLC History display, this time-line will take up a good share of the Gathering Area; you wontbe able to miss it! In fact, you should have already received yourinvitation from the Transition Task Force, either by hand-out orthrough the mail, to participate in making this timeline come tolife with your own history contributions.

The Transition Task Force (TTF) has developed this project asa fun, thought-provoking, visual way to begin involving membersof FLC in their work over the next months the important work of looking carefully, honestly, and strategically at who we are asa congregation and where we are heading in the near future. The

information they will gather is not primarily geared to calling anew senior pastor; rather it is one step ahead of that. It centers onFLC as a community of faith what God is doing with us, whereGod is leading us and with your input and help along the way,its intent is to better understand ourselves so we can call pastoralleadership that will share that vision and lead us into an excitingfuture.

BUT but so often when there is mention of the TTF these daysand the work they are doing, I inevitably hear this question:Didnt we already do this? Why do we have to do this again?

That is a good question, and I think to some extent I understand

the frustration behind it. FLC has gone through a lot in the lastfew years with trying to understand the future and bring in pas-toral leadership. Most of you have now lived through more thanyour fair share of interim and transitional situations (me, in-cluded!) over the past four years. Back in 2007, lots of membersinvested lots of time in all the congregational analysis that wasrequired to call a new senior pastor, and more study was donethereafter to look at the role of an associate pastor. All of thatwas good work; Ive seen the documents. So, why do we have todo this again?

Well, let me just set three things before you to think about as youask or hear that question.

Think about all that has changed over the last four years not justat FLC, but think of all that has changed in your own life, in theFarmington community, in the world! I certainly dont have totell you all the ways the national economic crisis has impactedour lives, but many other things are different, too. Four years is along time.

Think about the explosion we have seen and continue to see inyoung families and children among us. Do you know howblessed we are by that? The majority of Lutheran churches (and

many other denominations) are aging and

declining in numbers; they long for youngpeople among them to carry on the faith and we have so many we are literally run-ning out of space! Right now, we continueto grow, thanks be to God, but will thattrend continue? And how do we value and recognize all our otherage groups in the midst of that? This needs our best attention.

I personally have adopted the mantra that says, Every crisis isan opportunity for something new! Its Biblical, you know:God is in the business of new life! So how about taking all theexperiences of the past four or five years and recognizing all thatwe can learn from it, from both the joys and the challenges. Arewe not in a new place these days? I believe that. Is it perfect?Of course not. But are we better equipped today to honestly look at who we are as Gods people? Well, you can decide that.

So I hope that helps and I hope you will always feel free toshare your input and insights with the TTF (and with me) as theydo their important work. In fact, how about stopping by theTimeline and adding your own piece of history to the journey.

    Blessings, Pastor Phil

    From the Pastor

WHY DO WE HAVE TO DO THIS AGA IN?

    Pastor Phil Walen

The 2011 FLC Annual Congregational Meeting was held onSunday, January 30, 2011, with 112 voting members in atten-dance. Following the 10:30 service, a light lunch was servedaround tables in the Education Wing, and President Sara Otter-ness officially called the meeting to order after all attendeeshad been served and were seated.

Pastor Phil opened the meeting with prayer. The agenda andthe minutes of the 2010 meeting were approved. Pastor Philshared an oral report (in addition to his published report), call-ing attention to what he sees as the timeline for his interim pe-riod at FLC. Pastor Phil also shared that at the Annual Meetingin January of 2012, he expects his time to be winding down asthe exciting prospect of welcoming a new pastor draws near.

Treasurer Greg Lambert presented the 2010 Treasurers Report. He noted that although our cash balance was down from$68,000 at the beginning of 2010 to $42,000 at year end, wedid not have to hold any special appeals during the year, andthat has allowed us to gain a much better understanding of regular income and expense for future planning. He also noted, however, that in 2010 we were not yet able to bring on a sec-ond pastor.

There were two legislativewins at the end of the yearfor Americans at risk of hunger. One was the

Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act--a five year renewal of child nutri-tion programs. The second was the bill that protected the EarnedIncome Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).

The reauthorization of child nutrition programs at $4.5 billionover l0 years is the largest such increase for these programs.

Some of the improvements will be grants offered to communitiesto improve access and participation in their schoolbreakfast programs, Summer meals and after school supper pro-grams. It will automatically enroll children in Medicaid in freemeal programs at their school. Another provision will be encour-agements for schools to improve quality of meals.

The EITC and CTC will prevent 2.4 million people including1.2 million children from falling into poverty. It's a huge victory

for working families. A full-time minimum wage worker withtwo children, with an annual income of less than $16,000, wouldreceive $1500 less WITHOUT the CTC. These tax credits areensured for two years.

We here at Farmington Lutheran joined Bread for the Worldand thousands of other churches in writing our legislators urgingthe passing of these tax credit bills. Even in the age of e-mailand quick communication, handwritten letters areconsidered by Bread activists and congressional staff to be in-

credibly effective, second only to face-to-face meetings. Manythanks to all of you who participated. Is not this what Jesus asksus to do?
