This week we would like you to write your own version of the poem. To do this you will need to go on a sound hunt around your house and see what you can hear: for example at the moment I can hear my fingers typing but if I went outside I’d be able to hear the birds chirping. You will need to then structure your poem into a story describing the sounds. For example, perhaps you could have a verse describing the kitchen, one describing the garden and one describing the bathroom. You can start and finish with the same opening verse if you like – see below for the actual words of the poem – or challenge yourself and write your own. Please write your poem in your home learning book and then edit it carefully to make sure it is as good as it can be – we will be looking for correct punctuation, awesome adjectives, a narrative that makes sense and the right tone of voice. Please also use a dictionary to check your spellings.

Writing Task of the Week

Watch this video clip of Roger McGough reading his famous poem, The Sound Collector, https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zc6qxnb.

When you have polished your work, publish it on the Purple Mash 2-Do Sound Collector so we can see your super final poems.

Other English Tasks

(Including grammar and punctuation tasks)

1 Prepositions Watch this BBC clip and then take the quiz underneath it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zw38srd Then copy the three complete sentences into your home learning book. Finally, use these prepositions (up, down, along, in and under) to write some super sentences and save them on the Purple Mash Prepositions 2:Do. Challenge: find some more prepositions and write some more super sentences of your own.

2 Purple Mash 2:Dos

Bella and the Farm. First Flight – Story Gaps. Please complete these accurately and then ‘hand in’ for us to see.

3 Paddington –

sentence work

Look at the picture of Paddington at the end of this document. We would like you to use your senses to describe what's under Paddington's hat, fill in the gaps in the sentences (or write your own, but make sure you include all 5 senses) and then add to the Paddington 2:Do. As he reached under his hat he could feel................ He could smell the delicious scent of .......... Hungrily, he placed it all into his mouth, tasting the ............ As the train pulled out of the station, the bear could hear ........... He looked up at ..................... Now rewrite these sentences, making them fabulous (think awesome adjectives, similes, alliteration, fronted adverbials). A bear stood on the platform. He wore a coat and hat. He carried a suitcase. He held out a paw. Open Purple Mash 2-Do Paddington and save your work in there.

4 Comprehension Fantastic Mr Fox extract, attached at the end of this document. Read and then answer the questions, as full sentences, in your home learning book. You can save to your work file and then email us to let it know.

5 Handwriting In your handwriting book, practise your spelling words.

You might also like to:

In your home learning book, you might also like to draw a picture of what's under Paddington's hat or what's in his suitcase. Or you might like to write what you think might be happening – a conversation between Paddington and the man, for instance. You could save this in your work folder on Purple Mash and let us know.

Maths (Including online, written, practical, number facts and multiplication tables).

Play 10 games in the garage on TT Rockstars. Improve your accuracy and earn more coins!

Science – Plants Our new topic in science is plants. In your home learning book, draw a mind map and add everything you already know about plants. You could then use a different coloured pen to add what you’d like to find out. Save this on Purple Mash so we can see it. You can either take a photo and save into your work file or try and complete the Plants 2:Connect that we have set for you. Now watch these clips:

Watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks1-

Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zy66fg8/articles/zcjnp39 Scroll down the page on this second BBC site and do the quiz to make sure you can label the parts of the plant correctly. In your home learning book, draw and label a plant correctly. Take a photo and upload it to your work file in Purple Mash. For a challenge, add some extra information to your diagram based on what you have learnt in the clips. For example, Roots help the plant anchor in the ground and deliver nutrients to the plant. Finally complete the Purple Mash 2:D0, Plants Labelling.

You might also like to (ongoing):

Plant a seed and keep a plant diary. You can either do this on Purple Mash using the Plant Diary that we have set as a 2:DO or write your own. Record what you did and why (for example, date, I planted my xx seed in in soil and watered it before putting on the window ledge to get some light). You will then need to observe and tend your seedling every day and record what happens. You might like to plant a bean seed as you can effectively grow this in a glass on kitchen roll or a napkin and it's a good way to really see what’s happening.

Project (ongoing) The Great Outdoors- Art

We have attached a selection of different art projects related to The Great Outdoors. We would like you to have a go at completing at least one activity per week. Remember, all activities can be changed to suit the materials and supplies you have at home. You may also have an even better idea that links art and nature! If you can, you are able to upload photos of your work to Purple Mash in your ‘My work’ folder.

The sound collector

A stranger called this morning

Dressed all in black and grey

Put every sound into a bag

And carried them away

The whistling of the kettle

The turning of the lock

The purring of the kitten

The ticking of the clock

The popping of the toaster

The crunching of the flakes

When you spread the marmalade

The scraping noise it makes

The hissing of the frying pan

The ticking of the grill

The bubbling of the bathtub

As it starts to fill

The drumming of the raindrops

On the windowpane

When you do the washing-up

The gurgle of the drain

The crying of the baby

The squeaking of the chair

The swishing of the curtain

The creaking of the stair

A stranger called this morning

He didn't leave his name

Left us only silence

Life will never be the same

‘The Terrible Shovels’ from Fantastic Mr Fox, Roald Dahl

‘I’ve got it! Come on! There’s not a moment to lose! Why didn’t I think of it before?’

‘Think of what, Dad?’

‘A fox can dig quicker than a man!’ shouted Mr Fox, beginning to dig. ‘Nobody in the world can dig as

fast as a fox!’

The soil began to fly out furiously behind Mr Fox as he started to dig for dear life with his front feet.

Mrs Fox ran forward to help him. So did the four children.

‘Go downwards!’ ordered Mr Fox. ‘We’ve got to go deep! As deep we possibly can!’

The tunnel began to grow longer and longer. It sloped steeply downward. Deeper and deeper below the

surface of the ground it went. The mother and the father and all four of the children were digging

together. Their front legs were moving so fast you couldn’t see them. And gradually the scrunching and

scraping of the shovels became fainter and fainter.

After about an hour, Mr Fox stopped digging. ‘Hold it!’ he said. They all stopped. They turned and

looked back up the long tunnel they had just dug. All was quiet. ‘Phew!’ said Mr Fox. ‘I think we’ve done

it! They’ll never get as deep as this. Well done, everyone!’

They all sat down, panting for breath. And Mrs Fox said to her children, ‘I should like you to know that

your father is a fantastic fox.’

Mr Fox looked at his wife and she smiled. He loved her more than ever when she said things like that.

1. How do we know how fast Mr Fox was digging? Find 2 pieces of evidence from the text.

2. Copy out these statements in the order they happen in the text:

a. Mr Fox smiles at Mrs Fox.

b. The four children start digging.

c. Mr Fox has a fantastic idea.

d. Mrs Fox runs forward to help.

e. The family can no longer hear the shovels.

3. Why do you think Mr Fox told the family to dig a deep tunnel?

4. Find a simile in the paragraph beginning “The tunnel began to grow longer…”.

5. Why do you think Mr Fox loved Mrs Fox more than ever? Use evidence from the text.

6. How do the family feel by the end of the passage? Use evidence from the text.

7. Find synonyms for: furiously shouted scrunching quiet.

Art Ideas

This term our topic is ‘The Great Outdoors’, with a creative focus. So we are providing you with some

different art options to complete whilst you are at home.

Choose at least one of these options to complete each week (or as many as you like!) Remember, you can

change the activity to suit what materials you have at home.

Land Art Be like Andy Goldsworthy and produce some art in nature,

using nature. Can you…? - Make an arch or tunnel

- Make a pattern with stones -Make a shape from leaves

- Make a spiral

Land Art Can you find a piece of natural

material that looks like something else e.g. a face?

or

Can you create a face out of natural materials? Write a

description about your creation.

Hot Air Balloon Draw a hot air balloon (pen,

pencil, paint..) or craft from a paper plate/cardboard.

Write a short description of where you would travel in a hot

air balloon.

Purple Mash- 2Paint Draw/paint a natural landscape

online. Think about the features you can include.

- a field - a woodland - a river / lake - a mountain

Tree Collage Use small pieces of coloured

paper, newspapers or magazines (anything you can find) to create

a collage of a tree.

Tree or leaf rubbing Use a plain piece of paper and a

crayon to make a rubbing of some leaves in your garden or a tree.

Shadow Art (links to our science topic)

On a sunny day, place objects in front of paper and draw around

their shadows.

Landscapes Choose a window in your house.

Sit down and draw a pencil sketch of what you can see.

Are there some natural (physical) and human features in your

sketch?

Make your own Pebble In My Pocket

Find a stone and turn it into a character. You could add googly

eyes, hair and a mouth. Or transform it with paint. How do

you think it got into your garden – write a story of its

adventures.

Seed Art Collect some seeds, dried peas,

beans and lentils. Draw a picture or pattern and then glue (PVA best) the seeds on, building up

your pattern gradually.

Flowers Research different flowers and

practise sketching and colouring your favourite ones.

Purple Mash- 2paint Nature Explore the nature project on

2paint to use paint online using different textures and patterns.
