It is relevant to be akin to new technologies and materials, to develop a great intuition in the application of the newest and more avant-garde trends, and besides have the ability of mediating among other areas within a company: from marketing to production sector, from pattern making to tailoring; and also be able to communicate with professional sectors external to the company: photographers, journalists, experts in communication and fashion show organizers. The target of the Fashion Design course involves the preparation and training of professionals qualified to use their own creative skill, through an intercommunication between the different production phases and the product’s commercialization. It is a figure of a professional that, not only acquires a solid preparation in culture, an in-depth technical knowledge on different types of fibres: natural, synthetic and technological, and on different types of textile production processes; but also develops the ability of working in group using the theme “flexibility”. Being a fashion designer means revealing a professional image, highly skilled, in order to merge technique, and creativity, inspiration and achievements in fashion collections. HISTORY OF ARTHistorical and critical analysis. The aim of the course is to outline the basic development of art from the classical art of the Greeks and Romans to the present day. At the same time students will learn the essential critical tools which can be used to analyze and appreciate all works of art in the future.

HISTORY OF FASHIONFunctions of fashion throughout the history of the 20th Century until actual new technologies. Evolution of clothing: from physical to emotional needs. Garments: Elements of social structure, elements of status and power. An insight to fashion’s approach and revolutionary concepts throughout different decades; keeping in mind icons, important facts and the relationship between fashion and the social language it reflects.

SOCIOLOGYTheories and paradigms: historical evolution; the Schools of sociological thought. Social models: from the traditional society to the industrial society, to the information and communication society. Social structure. Mass Communication Research. Consumer society and Sustainability.

INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING Analysis, main concepts and tools used by marketers in the industry to determine the product design, packaging, branding, pricing, communication and distribution channel.

FASHION SYSTEMS AND TRENDSDecipher the key factors of communication of fashion in the media, the general public and in publicity. Try to encounter the secrets founds in publicity: what story is being told and how it trespasses in a global language. Study different brands, their personal communication in the media and market, take a look at the fashion fairs, their aim together with the most influencing magazines found world wide.

MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY IIntroduction, typology and methods of production of different kinds of fibres, fabrics and textile materials. Research and development of new synthetic fibres such as technical fabrics and intelligent fabrics.

PRODUCTION PROCESSFrom the idea to the outline: analysis of the product and its market. The sector product/style within the companies’ system. Organisation and production process. The product manager’s role between designer and industry.

COLOUR FORECASTThe aim of the process of colour forecasting is basically one of collecting, evaluating, analysing and interpreting the data anticipating a range of colours desirable by the consumer, using a strong element of intuition, inspiration andcreativity. Chromatic systems, chromatic harmony, perception and social use of the colour. Colour knowledge: experiment with colour mixing and colour schemes in order to understand colour and its application in the forecasting process.

NATURAL DRAWINGRepresentation and comprehension of the human figure through the anatomy and structure of the body. Visual perception: knowing how to observe. Introduction to fashion illustration. Acquisition and development of graphic resources for the representation of figures and clothing. Seeking and find relations between plastic languages applied to different applications of illustration.

TECHNICAL DRAWING IThe technical drawing course is based first, on learning how to draw the human figure in different positions front, back and sidewise. It focuses on drawing different kinds of garments like jackets, blouses, skirts, knitwear and so on, in plane and technical drawing. On the same day we will draw the same garment in both ways, flat and on the figure, as important exercise to compare the two visions of a garment.

COMPUTER TOOLS I Learning how to use the different tools that today’s software offers in order to work faster and more easily. The class involves recreating situations where the computer is the tool used to create different projects. Photoshop 7.0: photographic composition and image manipulation; digital imaging and its various techniques. Study resources and graphic layouts in fashion communication. Acquire communication knowledge to direct graphic layout to a specific target. Experiment with software possibilities and its multiple applications.

FASHION LAB: INTRODUCTION TO DIFFERENT TECHNIQUESDressmaking I: Introduction to sewing techniques by hand and with industrial machines. Prototype constructions and technical vocabulary. Pattern Cutting I: A thorough study of basic pattern cutting. Construction, volumes, details and finishing. MOULANGEMoulange is an intuitive art which involves cutting techniques on dummy, investiga-ting shapes and volumes, allowing personal interpretation and high creativity.

FASHION DESIGNDevelop a methodology plan for an accurate achievement in a fashion design project. Works include a visual sketchbook which reflexes the research undergone from a personal point of view observing our surrounding. It also includes illustrations and technical drawings of the garments as well as examples of different fabrics and colours.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT The keywords of the subject could be defined as: the importance of having a global and creative vision, offering the students, the knowledge and tools for a strategic research, designing and planning. This allows students to develop the creative direction of their own projects, to identify market opportunities, trends, gaps and niches; and change them into a competitive advantage for a positive result.

WORKSHOPS Complementary issues for projects with a transversal character towards different professional areas.

2nd YEAR

SEMIOTICS AND COMMUNICATION FOR DESIGN AND MARKETINGAcquisition of the fundamental tools to approach the matters involving shapes and languages of communication throughout the study of the different types of signs, as well as the rules that define their production, transmission and exchange. Through a semiotic analysis, foundations will be laid for the description of formal mechanisms through which identities and significances in relation to a brand are constructed, as well as products and corporate identity.

BUSINESS PLANPreparing a Business Plan is the first step to launch a new brand into a saturated market and one of the keys to succeed, especially in the today’s fast changing envi-ronment. The course will enable students to become entrepreneurs, going from the idea to the reality.

MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY IIExpose the students to an international textile market vision, learning the main differences of fabrics and their own personal characteristics in order to apply them correctly. Provide students a broad vision of the international textile market, knowledge about the different types of fabric and their characteristics in order to carry out a correct application.

COMPUTER TOOLS IIA deeper insight to computer programmes such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Create animated presentations on the visual concept of fashion design. Learning the tools and primary elements to develop animated objects and interactive menus that can be used for web format. Methodology for the completion of production planning, presentations and notes or press releases at an advanced level.

ILLUSTRATIONDevelop and investigate fashion illustration techniques. Experiment different ways to encounter a personal style.

TECHNICAL DRAWING IITechnical drawings plane and figurative. Work on volume and precise interpretation for future fashion template drawings.

FASHION LAB: PATTERN CUTTING AND TAILORING II Advanced application of pattern cutting and tailoring techniques in order to support the projects developed during the second course.

DRESSMAKING II Advanced application of dressmaking with specific industrial machines in order to support the projects developed during the second course. Prototype construction with definitive fabrics.

PROJECT 1KNITWEAR: TECHNIQUES AND PROJECT Study of the techniques in the elaboration and production of knitting. Research of trends and colours. Visits to workshops. Methodology for the good accomplishment of a project involving collections made of knit. Creation of a sample.

PROJECT 2 PRINTING PROCESSMake students aware of textile work, its manipulation, its transformation, the diverse printing processes, such as serigraphy and its application within the art of fashion designing. Furthermore, students are meant to reach a creative development, both manual and intellectual, in a personal way, always getting at the issue and the matters that need to be taken into account, through playing, exploring, experimenting and enjoying, after all.

PROJECT 3 MENSWEAR COLLECTIONIntroduction to men’s fashion design and menswear collection with a special interest in the past century. Approach, coordinate and development of a menswear collection. The project’s aim is for students to have a closer insight towards commercial reality and creativity in men’s fashion. PROJECT 4WOMAN COLLECTIONStudents have to create a reduced woman collection from the first step to the end of the collection. They must develop a garment in collaboration with the departments of pattern making and tailoring. The student must observe the environment and its interpretation in fashion Elaborate a trend, colour and fabric chart.

PROJECT 5ACCESSORIES DESIGN Accessories, from a professional point of view, as an element that personalises fashion, strengthens the image and transforms volumes. History of footwear, bags, belts, leather goods, jewellery, hats and hairdressing. Materials and design.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT (Optional)This project focuses on broadening our students’ minds and approaching new formulas were students from different areas works together under professional tutoring. The Interdisciplinary Project is a parallel activity strongly linked to major brands in the market.

CRASH COURSESDevelop different stimulating intensive projects in various areas such as cutting-edge technologies in textile market, craftsmanship fabrics, eco-denim and circular knitting.

SEMINARThe Interdisciplinary seminar gets deep in contemporary issues, offering broader vision for the different projects.

3rd YEAR

THESIS CONCEPTThe beginning and the key core for the bases of a fashion collection is the concept. Baring this in mind the student develops their personal idea of the fashion collection relying of thorough investigation, field work, theorical – visual and cultural studies, reflecting their own creativity.

PRESENTATION SKILLSLearn the keys to improve the effectiveness of public presentations. Develop communication skills for oral presentations.

PATTERN CUTTING IIIAn insight of tailoring techniques giving support and knowledge to the students for their final project. Acquiring basic man tailoring techniques and child tailoring.

DRESSMAKING IIIInvestigating and experimenting with fabric pre-assigned, taking extra care inobserving the flow of each fabric. Through moulange techniques develop details such as different variations of necks or sleeves.

PORTFOLIODevelop a portfolio based on the Thesis’s Final Project. Includes illustrations inspired from the thesis original concept with a special emphasis through the investigations of fabrics, colours, shapes and volumes.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGEThe students have to answer with their digital cameras to a series of proposals linked to the theoretical, technical and conceptual learning being the basis of fashion photography.Realization of a photos catalogue which reflects the personality and style of the Thesis Project.

FASHION PRODUCT AND FABRICDefine target and the market surrounding it. Selecting the correct fabrics, materials and colour analysis to enhance the collection theme. Develop tendency chart, fabric and colour panel.

TECHNICAL DRAWING IIIDevelop the fashion templates for the thesis collection. Precise, exact and well worked out plane drawings with description, measurements, accessories, fabrics, and colour description. Teamed work with Pattern Making III.

CORPORATE IDENTITYIt is the creation of a fashion brand and its corporative image and logo with the marketing and graphic design strategy. Book project showing the evolution of the corporative identity linked with the thesis personal project.

FASHION STYLISTThe Stylist’s role in a fashion collection. Theory and practical classes looking for accessories, analyzing shapes, colour harmony, reinforcing concept and enhancing the final looks for the catwalk.

THESIS PROJECTDuring the Thesis Project, the students elaborate their own fashion collection. The main aim is to work, understand and adapt professional reality and acquire competency and autonomy in project.The students are advised by a professional internal team that supports their creative and productive processes. External Chief Fashion Designers will take part of the thesis project, verifying the coherence within the project: starting from the target and the concept design heading towards the final product and the corporative identity.

The headship of the Istituto Europeo di Design reserves the right to modify the study plan depending of the demands that may appear in relation to the didactic objectives.
