OASIS adventureBackground:This shoot was loosely inspired by a variety of adventure movies. It was shot at the beautiful Papago park in Phoenix, AZ - hence the title ‘Oasis Adventure’. The photographer, MUA and hairstylist have subsequently worked together on other projects and have a certain chem-istry when working on photo shoots. Our objective was to create a polished, but not over-produced series, highlight-ing the fashion in a glamourous way while featuring the beautiful scenery and existing natural features in a ro-mantic way.

Approach:From a technical stand point, the light-ing approach was dependent on balanc-ing speed lights with existing natural light. The Nikon Creative Lighting System proved once again to be very dependable  and a major asset in mak-ing the lighting adjustments easy dur-ing the course of the shoot.

A Union For The Modeling Industry

The truth behind the fashion industry is different than one might imagine, it is unlike what I envi-sioned when I first started. After being in the industry for a while, I really gained perspective. Little did I know when I first started that I would be modeling fur in the summer, bathing suits in the winter, working endless hours and eating very little. The business of modeling can truly be physical-ly exhausting. To top it off, usually everyone involved in the photo shoot got credit but no one ever knew the name of the model. Then there are dishonest agents and unscrupulous photographers to work with. Most young girls are not ready to be in their own business for themselves as a model, to be an entrepreneur. Modeling is not all glitter and gold and models were underrated and underpaid.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for models in 2010 was $32,920 per year. But low salaries are only the tip of the iceberg when we look at other problems in the industry. Models may face sexual harassment and be encouraged to develop unhealthy eating habits or to get plastic surgery. In an industry where you can get under the spotlight of the runway and be absorbed in the excitement of it all, it is easy to keep silent about life behind the runway—not wanting to get replaced by the next girl that’s dying to take your spot.

It’s for this reason I applaud model, Sara Ziff. She has given her career to make right what she has seen firsthand models facing on a daily basis. Therefore, Ms. Ziff has created The Model Alliance, which is a non-profit organization focusing on giving models a support system. The organization’s goal is to restore the current industry by establishing ethical prac-tices.

Most recently, The Model Alliance’s hard work has paid-off when Vogue made the choice to no longer hire models under 16 years old or who seemingly have eating disorders. In ad-dition, The Model Alliance has been working alongside the Council of Fashion Designers of America to address the rais-ing concerns in the fashion industry, especially the overlooked treatments of models backstage at New York Fashion Week.

CBCLARISSA EXPLAINS IT ALL

Page 23: Fashion-Faces Magazine Issue 11 December 2012

CThe Model Alliance has drafted The Model’s Bill of Rights they would like to see become the in-dustry standard. This would enforce rules such as the following:

1. It’s OK to Negotiate. It’s your absolute right to ask questions, reread the contract, and negotiate commissions. In addition, ask to see a break down of all costs and terms of the job. Don’t be shy to ask a question, it’s like Mom always says, “There is no such thing as a stupid question.”

2. Keeping it Professional. Models want private dressing rooms with no photographers around when they are changing—a problem that even has happened to models at New York Fashion Week.

3. Right’s of Minors. Just because you’re a young model doesn’t mean you should be treated any different. Model Alliance wants make sure that the Agency works with minor’s parents to for an education program. They wan to set a minimum age of 16 years to work the runway at New York Fashion Week and a minimum age of 17 to be asked to pose nude or semi-nude.

I’m in awe of the hard work that Sara Ziff has put forth to create this much needed support sys-tem which every model deserves. Together we can change the modeling industry so that no model, young or old, is put into an uncomfortable situation, unsanitary condition, or an unsafe environ-ment for the sake of their career. I encourage all you fashionistas to become a member, a patron, or simply donate by visiting modelalliance.org.

Josh “J. B. Bad” CareyOne of wrestling’s rising stars plays in our own backyard. Scottsdale’s very own wres-tling champ Josh Carey catches up with us to give us the scoop on how he got his start, the trying life of fighter, and why he will never go back to the “rat race.”

When I was young my mom would not allow me to watch wrestling, so I had to sneak around to watch it. She would catch me red-handed and a debate would ensue. She always won being that she was the parent and I was the child. I must have done damage to her defenses because one day I was able to convince her to watch it with me. For a while after that it became our thing. Every

Monday it was just her, myself, and the TV. Once I got to high school a lot of people who became my friend usually happened to be fans as well. We talked about Mondays on Tuesday and played the all the wrestling video games. Once high school and play-time was over, I still found myself drawn to the squared circle. A friend of mine found a promotion in Arizona in which we jumped at the opportunity to attend. IZW (Impact Zone Wrestling) was based out of “The Sets” in Mesa, AZ and we found ourselves attend-ing every Tuesday.

That’s where my passion turned to desire. Watching “Jay Garland,” “Miracle Mike James,” the team of “Mucha Lucha,” “Father Punishment,” and so many more, made me want to be where they all were... in the ring. My first taste of reality was a Ted Dibiase seminar with Navajo Warrior. I met the “Million Dollar Man,” Hawaiian Lion, Jonny “The Bull” Stamboli, and Lawrence Tyler.

What was it like meeting these legends? It was so awesome to be there learning from guys I watched growing up.

WRESTLE-MANIA

DEC 2012 | www.fashion-faces.com32

Page 33: Fashion-Faces Magazine Issue 11 December 2012

What happened next?It was 4 or so years before I stepped into a ring again. I got caught up in the rat race and it had a “meng death lock” on me. I started by setting up the ring, curtains, ban-ners, and doing security during the event. When the show was over I would tear down everything that was put up (alongside oth-ers in ring crew). My friend “clutch” who also shared the same desire, came across a man by the name of Mike Wilbanks who directed us to Dave Rose, who led us to Vince Vega. This is where I would meet The Shadow Fox, The High Alert Cody Baker, and Joe LaRudo. Many others would pass through and at the end, only three of us re-mained. They were myself, The Shadow Fox and Joe LaRudo. We trained for a year and a half under all conditions with Vince before I had my first match.

When was it?My first fight ever took place on December 5, 2010 for Rockstar Wrestling Alliance (RWA). I would wrestle under the assumed alias J. B. Bad. I continued to train for six more months before I started my career as a professional wrestler. I started with the promotion Elite Xtreme Wrestling (EXW) which all was made possible by the coattails of The Shadow Fox. In February of 2012, Shadow Fox and I competed in the very first ZERO1 tryout in Florida. I didn’t win.

How did you take the loss?I took the devastation of losing to fuel my fire to one day be a legend. I trained harder and pushed myself beyond my known limits. I am currently focusing a lot of my time to Pure Pro Wrestling (PPW/Zero1USA) and Club Departivo Colliseo (CDC) at the southwest corner of Dobson and Broadway in Mesa, AZ.

Tell us about your most recent tryout.Recently I went to The Gathering of the Juggalos hosted by the Insane Clown Posse at Cave-In-Rock, IL to complete in another tryout. I competed for 5 days all while being taught by none other than Vampiro and the Ring Rydas. Having several professionals guide me through the tough course that lay ahead of me made it easier than it otherwise would have been. So many other wrestlers helped me to stay grounded and at the same time keep my spirits up. I am very fortunate to of have the good graces of meeting the individuals that I have.

MUSIC MAYHEM

STALKING STRODE

Starting up over 10 years ago, this Arizona-born rock band is quickly-but-steadily rising to popularity with their witty lyrics and comical stage antics. Already having performed with rock icons of their day, Sponge, Alient Ant Farm, and Orgy, the members of Stalking Strode are bracing themselves for the lifestyle and opportunities other musicians are still dreaming about.

What does hilarious lyrics, funny band members, stage antics, and of course great music all have in common? Stalking Strode.

by Michelle Mousel

Arley Lairmore had started playing guitar at age 18, just for fun.  Being influenced by the likes of System of a Down, Rammstein, Coheed and Cambria, and the popular Arizona band Sectas; he began seeking fellow musicians to jam with.  He began playing separate-ly with drummer Everett Jones and guitarist Jacob Conley.  The two guitarists had fun working on an original song and talks of forming a band began.

Jacob had asked his brother, Patrick Conley, if he wanted to sing, which he gladly ac-cepted.  Jacob, being influenced by KISS, Hinder, The Ramones, The Strokes and Social Distortion; along with Patrick whose influences are also KISS, Hinder, Stephen Lynch,

Page 35: Fashion-Faces Magazine Issue 11 December 2012

and Life; brought a classic/punk rock sound to the table.  Adding to the musical cocktail are the influences of Arley and Everett, who is influenced by Orgy, Nine inch Nails, and Mastodon.

In late 2004, the band began mainly for self gratification.  Just making their own music was enough for the quartet.  In 2010 and a couple bass players later the boys welcomed A r l e y ’ s y o u n g e r b r o t h e r , Casey Lair-more, to the band.

Casey, the left handed bass player, learned to play bass for the band even though he did not own his own bass at the time.  He had to bor-row Jacob’s right handed bass, and flip it.

After upgrading to his own, he had to re-learn the songs right side up.  With hav-ing older influences such as the Beatles and AC/DC alongside newer ones like Rammstein and Coheed and Cambria, the bass player was the last ingredient to the

cocktail.  Once all the ingredients start-ed mixing, they decided to get serious.

After writing approximately four handfuls of original songs, including My Girl Roxxx, Get Right and Partner for Life, the band be-gan to discuss names.  Fueled by the love and appreciation of music, horror movies, and the belief that there is humor in everything, the band created the name STALKING StRoDe,

then began to perform at house parties.  Af-ter positive reviews from party goers and com-parisons to bands like N i r v a n a , The Pixies, The Kinks, and the Red Hot Chili P e p p e r s ,

the band created a YouTube channel and Facebook page to push their mu-sic with the help of modern technology.

The two medias started getting traffic, so much so that singer Patrick Conley, a long time Facebook holdout, even publically agreed to open his own Facebook page when STALKING StRoDe reached 100 ‘likes.’

STALKING StRoDe is open to any musical opportunities and will be seeking management and bookings.  They are also team-ing up with Brian, the drummer and backup vocalist of Sectas, to record their first Pro Demo.

Upon completion, copies of this demo can be won via contests on Facebook and YouTube.

When five guys who absolutely love, respect and appreciate mu-sic want to put out stage shows comparable to Rammstein or KISS it is something to behold.

STALKING StRoDe is truly dedicated and appreciative to the fans, and want to give them their all.  When these five guys team up with a world full of fans, the sky is the limit.

They rock hard, put on a good show, and are worth the crowd-ed venues.

So don?t forget to check them out and support the local band scene!

Misty

Misty is a stunning tortie colored cat with a gorgeous fur coat that resembled chocolate and vanilla swirl cake. Found as a stray, this blue eyed beauty Arizona Humane Society to find a new forever INDOOR home.

She has a benevolent attitude with an affectionate disposition and is fond of curling up next to you and soaking up attention. She will dazzle you with her charm and has proven herself to be a faithful friend. Toy mice and feather wands no longer interest this mellow and easygoing 5-year-old and she would rather spend her time snuggled up on a fluffy blanket catching up on her beauty sleep. She loves warm warming her fun in the sunshine and is an absolute love bug who could spend hours being petted, brushed, massaged and cuddled. Her heart has longed for a forever family for weeks now and she doesn’t ask for much… just unconditional

love and devoted friendship.

Misty is available NOW at the Sunnyslope adoption center located at 9226 N 13th Avenue in Phoenix. As part of the Arizona Humane Society’s Caturday special, now until December 31st the adoption fee for all cats

6-months and older is based on the date on the calendar.

Trans-Global Pop-culture Fashion Music, Art & Design, occupy a parallel universe and you are either inside understanding the codes ,signs and signals, or outside not invited to the party. In the acid soaked sixties, amphetamine driven seventies, cocaine psychosis eighties and ecstasy fueled nineties, fashion had a language driven by the audio-visual codes of pop-culture. Now however this language is devoid of meaning, crippled from above and rendered as a bland one dimensional global Esperanto, the language of marketing and branding.

Infused and enthused with unimaginative retro mania and bland pre-dictable pop, fashion as such no longer exists, it has been replaced by Fashion-ism, a pseudo junk culture designer tyranny of dis-informa-tion and aggressive marketing. But what new style codes are creeping around the back streets waiting to throw the bruised, yet still massive ego of the fashion industry into an even greater panic of insecurity and misunderstanding. Because in this new cultural revolution style war, ‘on trend’ is off trend! And by the time it’s ‘happening’ it’s already over!

In the global village of digital wonderland, age space and time no longer have meaning, there are no age groups, target groups, class, professional or cultural reference points. So how do you find your way through the trans-cultural minefield of this new style code war zone? And how cool is cool anymore? How do you decode the codes, signs and signals of digital wonderland, buy a ticket to ride and not get left at the station wondering where the train went?

Style is a weapon! You cannot buy it or fake it! It’s your own personal signature, a stylistic DNA code, and you either have it or you don’t. Of course like 99% of the current fashion industry, you can simply imitate someone else’s old ideas and try to pass them off as your own!

It is always the ‘outsiders’ individuals, small companies, artists, musicians, designers etc, who do NOT conform to the norm, who reject and indeed ignore the conventions and marketing smog of the fashion industry, who create the tsunami of change, and today this is a change that has been needed to shake the very foundations of the fashion industry for an awfully long time.

I have a long association with fashion, music, art, design, advertising etc , so it was perhaps a little easier for me to ‘read the signs’, and anyway, we set out from the very beginning to position ourselves as ‘outsiders’. So in this sense Pure Mind Clothing, is perhaps more ‘anti-fashion’. We are though, quite small, (I hope) modest, unassuming and certainly not marketing or brand driven. I also feel that with Pure Mind, we have a style signature, identity and philosophy of our own, and I tend to feel that we achieve this not by what we do, but rather by what we don’t do.

Infused with a sense of ‘classic’ 80s/90s Yohji Yamamoto/Commes des Garçons, together with the beautiful, soft, loose, shape and feel of classic Indian clothing, Pure Mind is simple, minimal, functional, loose, arty, stylish and cool, beautifully cut, with no decora-tion, and only available in pure black or white, it also transcends age and gender and is therefore available for everyone, in a true ‘Democratization of Style’. Pure Mind has been described as ‘Post -Minimalist’, any reference points however, are certainly not based in the uncomfortable, dysfunctional state of Western clothing design for with PM we wanted very much to deliver a more ‘Asian’ freedom and ‘lightness of being ‘ to the wearer.

Beautifully cut, and very affordable Pure Mind Clothing will we hope be a must have object of desire, for all those who have a genuine feel for a cool arty minimalist style, have good taste and, don’t have pockets bulging with cash!

Fashion and indeed the fashion industry increasingly resembles a mixture of ‘the emperor’s new clothes’ and a dog’s breakfast! A loud, flashy, shiny, over styled, over decorated retro collage of mediocrity. It is hardly sur-prising to hear both the great Japanese masters Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo say they hate fashion! Certainly in London and indeed Japan, always the ‘movers & shakers’ of what is genuinely fresh and new, more and more designers are distancing themselves from the whole idea of

‘fashion and the fashion industry’! If one reads the ‘codes, signs and signals’ of meaning and implication, it seems obvious that there is a definite move away from the traditional structures and reference points of fashion and the fashion industry! Where will it lead! Who know? But that surely is the exciting part!

I have shot designs by Kim McCormick and Belle McCluskey a few times in Seattle and one element that always comes through is fun.  Each shoot feels like a day in the park, in the same sense one gets from Seurat impressionist paintings.  Their sensibilities are equal parts whimsy and serious craft.  As we are out and about, we made use of the designers’ dogs, available vehicles, and a miniature golf course to em-phasize simple pleasures.  That late 1800s fashion vibe was the primary concept, with emphasis on pastel and primary color combinations as the secondary concept.

Each image was shot in Seattle over the course of two days, primarily at Discovery Park but other local parks near the designers’ houses.  What is always fun about shooting in Seattle is the collabora-tive nature of the shoots truly come through.  No one is competitive or shoots down the ideas of the others involved, and everyone is willing to spend all day to get the correct shots.

ARTIST AWARDMonika gregarek

Twenty-nine year old, Monika Gregarek was born in Poland but since 2012 has lived in Ham-burg, one of the more beautiful cities in Germany.

She shares her story: I am a freelance fashion designer and artist with passion. The interest in drawing I discovered very early.Since childhood I started to draw detailed human figures. When I was 11 years old, I drew my first sketches motivated by my fascination of the world of fashion. I was inspired by Karl La-gerfeld and Gianni Versace who are my idols. The classic and elegant style of Chanel and the femi-nine design of Valentino inspired me particularly.

I also have been inspired by Hannes Doellel, who already is a freelance fashion designer. His skills and perfection inspired my own ambition to do more.

My favorite styles are classic, modern and elegant. My dream is to be established as a fashion de-signer in the fashion world. Enrich the fashion world with my own designs and ideas is more than a dream.

"Teresa has worked and volunteered in the non-profit field for over 33 years.  Her degree is in Non-Profit Management from Arizona State University.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS became an important part of her life in 1991 when she was first hired on. Of the 9 years she worked for them, a majority of her time was spent at the Phoenix agency. While a Case Manager, she was elected to serve as the National Case Manager Chair for the National Professional As-sociation. While that position was the most rewarding for her, she also had the privilege to be a Case Work Director in Phoenix and an Associate Director of Training for the BBBS National Office in Philadelphia.  Teresa has traveled from Toronto to Miami, New York City to Maui and all points in between selling her jewelry.  Thanks to Face Book, she now has customers world wide!  Her jewelry can also be found at an art gallery in Three Rivers, Califor-nia and at: www.heartsdesirecreations.com

"I am grateful for the opportunity to promote the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo for it allows me to stay in touch with a cause I truly believe in", Teresa says. As an official BBBS National Partner, 10% of all Logo sales goes back to BBBSA. Please support the cause by wearing the logo. Even if you don't wear jewelry, GIFT CERTIFICATES are available and they make great gifts for Board Members, Staff and Volunteers. Let's not forget the best way to support the cause: BECOME A VOLUNTEER MENTOR. To find an agency near you, please log on to the link below."www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org
