In today’s society being well put together and

emulating an image of perfection is typically

considered beautiful. However, there is

something to be said for going against the grain,

and mixing in a touch of grunge into one’s look.

A girl can still play with feminine elements, mix

in some grunge-inspired features, and still feel

fashionable. The contrast of the soft feminine

silhouettes and fabrics with a grittier plaid or

denim fabric can make a unique look that is still

pretty.

inspiration

After flipping through the pages of magazines

there was a general trend towards creating a

beautiful image through the journey towards

perfection. This meant being neatly put together

with not a single hair out of place. BUT… this is

NOT what inspired me. In contrast to

“perfection” you see people looking a little

grungier and disheveled… not exactly prim and

proper looking, if you will. If you look closer

at these “messy” individuals they are actually

emitting a beautiful image, look truly happy, and

are at peace in a sense. By looking at these

people who aren’t all put together, and have some

grit to their look, I can see that one does not

have to try and look neat and tidy or perfect to

be pretty or beautiful and actually happy.

beauty treatment

The key to this concept is contrast, thus the

hair and make-up will keep to this theme and an

asymmetrical look will be created. There will be

a mix of well put together vs. messy and

disheveled, as well as feminine vs. masculine.

hair

The hair will mix clean short masculine look, but

will also incorporate feminine elements, such as

a braid and long flowing tousled hair. On one

side the hair will be closely pinned back and

neatly contained with a braid, whereas the other

side will be more free and flowing. Most of the

hair will be parted to one side of the head with

added waves and texture to create a slightly

messier look.

make-up

The focus for contrast in the make-up will be in

the eyes. One eye will be very played down and

natural, while the other will have exaggerated

lower lashes and eyeliner. A dark red vampy lip

will be added to create a grittier, darker look,

and the whole face will be a matte fair skin tone

in order to appear less put together. A heavy

dark brow will also be used to create the

grungier masculine image.

modern day warrior

An everyday woman may just go about her life

every day, and appear just about as strong

as the next woman. However, what you don’t

see is the strength that she has and the

battles that she goes into every day. By

taking traditional elements used by people

going into war, such as war paint and

armour, this woman is transformed into

someone else: a modern day warrior. With

the hair making her tower over the rest,

fierce make-up that could create shock and

awe in people’s minds, and the armour

helping her defend herself from anything

that comes in her direction, she is ready to

intimidate and go into battle.

inspiration

Every day people dress up or use some sort

of technique to send a message about

themselves to others around them. One

particular instance where this happens is

when one is going into battle or preparing

to fight. From historic periods when people

put on suits of armour, to war paint used in

tribes, and the gear that men and women in

the armed forces adorn, each one puts on

something to aid in their defense and create

the intimidation. When these people suit up

or paint their face they project power and

strength, and become someone different from

who they are in everyday life.

For this particular editorial the model

should appear as if she is going to war.

This means taking traditional hair and

facial intimidation techniques used by

people that would be heading into to battle.

hair

For the hair, it was important to have it

oversized and messy in order to create a

look that would strike fear into someone

when going into a fight. However, it was

also important to have it clean and out of

the way so it would not obstruct vision or

other elements created to intimidate a

person. Thus, a sort of faux-hawk look was

styled and exaggerated to a point where it

made the model appear taller and stronger

than she was.

make-up

War paint is one common element used to

create a more threatening perception of the

person. To create a more modern twist, a

shock of color will be used across the eyes,

cheekbones and on the lip to produce a look

that would intimidate others.
