Like every new version of the program, Zoner Photo Studio 13 offers many new features and more polish for the old ones. Let’s take a look at these together.

The most basic changes and improvements are discussed elsewhere, in brief. So here instead of those, we’ll instead examine several new editing tools in detail.

Basic Overview

Still, the rest of this won’t make as much sense without at least a lightning overview, so here are a few details on the changes overall. The most important one is not too visible. It’s full support for 64-bit Windows. This makes work much faster, by letting Zoner Photo Studio 13 take full advan-tage of your computer.

The most visible change is to the Navigator. That’s the pane you use to choose what’s shown in the Browser. The Navigator newly includes Favorites and Catalog tabs. The Catalog is not new, but it is much handier now and can find and filter pictures by various criteria, including text, ratings, labels, and even GPS coordinates. The last of these can be much more useful than it may seem, especially when you are looking for all pictures taken from within a certain distance of a picture. You can also combine filters.

The Browser pane now includes a toolbar for adding ratings and labels. Ratings and labels were previously only available via shortcut keys and a right-click-menu item. The Viewer now includes its own customizable toolbar. The Viewer can now be displayed on a second monitor, which makes work a lot easier when for example you are rating and sorting pictures. It is also now possible to open multiple Viewer tabs. (Until now, it was only possible to open multiple Editor tabs.)

Make Them Disappear

The Manager module’s menu bar now includes a new menu, named Create. This menu contains functions that are more for creating something than publishing it, etc. It also makes these tools— —3D, HDR, panoramas, and postcards—easy to reach. The Create menu also includes a sub-menu for a feature new to version 13, named Join Multi-exposures. Previous versions offered some limited ways to join two or three pictures. But the new Join Multi-exposures feature can join an unlimited number of pictures into one. You do not need to shoot from a tripod when plan-ning to join multi-exposures. This feature can automatically align hand-shot pictures before further work.

Three different kinds of joins are offered in this submenu. One function just aligns the pictures. Much more interesting is another one: Remove Moving Objects. This function removes from the final image every object that is not in all of the source pictures. This makes it very easy to, for example, remove the cars from a section of street, as long as that area is carless in at least one source photo.

The Catalog. In this illustration, the Catalog listing is being filtered.

Join Multi-exposures—the Remove Moving Objects function

You can also do the opposite: populate the final image with every copy of a moving object found in the source pictures. This is easy to do; just turn on the relevant option. Use this to, for ex-ample, create an image showing the whole path travelled by a ski jumper, or “clone” the subject of a picture, for effects like a boy sitting in every chair around a table. The function also lets you selectively display objects so you can manually remove or add some copies from the final pic-ture—see the illustration.

Professional Photo Retouching

Version 13 also bring the new Healing Brush tool, something normally only found in Photoshop-type editing software. This tool is quite similar to the Clone Stamp already found in Zoner Photo Studio. So you may ask, what is the difference? The clone stamp transfers part of a picture from one place to another, making no corrections to the transferred material along the way. The Healing Brush, meanwhile, transfers only the source region’s structure, while letting the target region determine the transferred material’s color. This makes for faster and better retouching. The tool is especially useful for digital facelifts or retouching the sky.

Transformable Text, Insert Symbol Window

A window for adding symbols to a picture has been added; use it to add any symbol available among Windows fonts. These symbols are really just a special kind of inserted text, and can be worked with in the same way as text. Meanwhile, all work with text is more versatile than before: it can now be visually resized, rotated, and more. This is much easier having to e.g. set type in rotation in degrees like before. Inserting symbols is like placing text, except that only one char-acter can be added at a time. No new symbol can be added until the last one has been saved.

Make It All Disappear

Zoner Photo Studio now supports transparency wherever formats themselves support it. Thus if you open a picture with a transparent background, it is not converted to e.g. white, but remains transparent for your further work. You can also add transparency where it was not before. Use the new Eraser tool to “brush” transparency onto a picture. When using this feature, do not for-get that you must store the picture in a format that supports transparency, like PNG or GIF.

Original Postcards in Minutes

The new version includes a new postcard maker wizard. This feature is quite similar to the Paper Saver publishing tool. Use Create | Postcard to reach the window for this feature. But first, select just the pictures that you want to work with. Otherwise, the program works with all the pictures in the current folder. You can deselect pictures while using the Postcards wizard, but it is more con-venient to do so before starting.

The Postcards wizard shows a column with all selected pictures on the left and postcard templates on the right. Use the settings at the bottom of the window to set how pictures are placed, set how large the postcard is, and place pre-made frames around individual pictures if desired. Once read-ied, the postcard can be saved and then either printed or immediately opened in the Editor.

The Postcard Maker wizard is simple and easy to use.

RAW Improved Once Again

The module for work with files in the RAW format has also seen improvements of several kinds. First, you can now get more space to view the preview, by hiding the side panels with thumbnails and conversion settings. F8 and F9 keyboard shortcuts have also been added for showing/hiding these.

Meanwhile, the module’s functionality has improved too, in three ways. It now includes vignetting/antivignetting functions that were previously only in the Editor. Now you can handle vignetting needs without adding JPEG compression to your pictures. The module also now offers resizing. It’s now very easy to set pictures’ final size during conversion, as a percent of the source picture’s size. The last improvement here is the choice of underexposure method. Use it to tell the program how to darken the picture in areas where color data is missing—that is, in its bright-est areas. The menu offers three options—Linear, Vivid Colors, and Contrast. Each has its uses.

Here the thumbnail panel normally shown on the left has been hidden. On the right, notice the underexposure method control.

While Zoner Photo Studio 13 has somewhat fewer new tools than version 12 did, it brings many minor improvements as well as several practical editing tools. If you are not sure whether or not to pick it up, you can try it out for free for 30 days before deciding. For the purchase itself, you can save money with the Home version or discounted upgrades from an earlier version.
