FATHER GREG'S PASTORAL LETTER
MARCH 2015
So we are ankle deep in Lent 2015, and I hope you have a plan to make use of it.
Me?I haven't had to snowblow my driveway for over a
month.A MONTH!
And I think that that's awesome!
Yeah...SURE it's been cold, but we've gotten almost
NO SNOW at my house.(Granted...I only snowblow the driveway when we get
4 or more inches of snow...and if not I just drive over it until it gets packed down...but just the same...I
haven't had to use the snowblower.)
Yeah, it's been COLD...but how often do you have to
go out in it?
Really?
Given the choice of really cold days OR 220 inches of snow...I think I'll go with the former. Why? No
shoveling snow.
I don't HAVE to go outside, so I don't.
Except to snowshoe...or go on retreat with our youth
groups...or to go to church...or to meet with people.

The point is: If we don't HAVE to do something, most
of the time we won't do it.
But this being driven indoors is a real spiritual
opportunity that many of us can miss.
There are things we can do INSIDE that help us work
on OUR insides; that can lead to spiritual growth if we
pursue them. We are absolutely LUCKY that lent lands
in the middle of the winter for us, and makes following
these pursuits more favorable than many alternatives
that I can think of...like snowblowing the driveway.
Pity the poor people in the southern hemisphere that
have lent during the summer...when there are so
many other things that they could be doing! Sit inside
and read the Bible or go outside and take a walk on an
80 degree day. Choosing the former takes some serious spiritual discipline.
Winter is a time of spiritual opportunity. Take it.
Choose from the many resources that are available to make use of this time indoors...to put it to spiritual
use, so that when summer finally comes, you are a better person for having taken spiritual advantage of
winter. If you need ideas, see me. If not...then next time you see the thermometer plunge below zero,
think about what a gift that could be...if you'll only use it.
Grace and Peace,Fr. Greg

ALTAR GUILD NEWS
For those who attended Candlemas on Sunday, Feb. 8th, I hope you took notice of our new and improved pew candles.
I would like to thank Ernie Mainland, who took the wrought iron candle holders and at his own expense, reworked them so they are safer and no longer rattle when bumped. On behalf of the entire parish Ernie, we thank you.
Thank you also to Sue and Rich Causley for the extended use of the Pussy Willow arrangement for the altar, during Lent. This is to honor the memory of their daughter, Lucy.
Altar Guild members, please let me know if you will be here during Holy Week, the Easter Vigil and Easter. We will need extra help during this time. Have a blessed Lent.

Grace Church in Traverse City for a morning session with Bishop Whayne Hougland about the needs and priorities of the church in the coming years. After lunch (provided by Grace Church), there will be workshops, including: Addictions and Recovery, Vestry & Treasury 101, Deacon Formation, Young Adult and Youth Ministries, and Spiritual Discernment. This kind of day is always a day well-spent: We not only learn some things, but we learn them together, and talk about them on the ride to and from Traverse City.
Theology Pub Theology Pub meets again on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00pm in the Resort Room (next to the Noggin Room) in the Perry Hotel. The presenter this month is Ken Allen, sharing insights on violence and non-violence with reference to the work of Thich Nhat Hanh. In a violent world, religious traditions advocate non-violence. Extremists (like the KKK in America, to name only one) use religious language to justify violence. Thoughtful religious leaders (notably St Augustine in the Western Christian tradition) acknowledge the need for violent resistance to violence to restore social order. All of which makes for a complicated moral situation. Join us for an engaging, respectful, and challenging conversation.

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Concert featuring the new conductor Libor Ondras on February 15, here at Emmanuel was a smashing success, with the church filled to capacity!
Special thanks to all who took part in the Ash Wednesday combined service, held here at Emmanuel this year. Special thanks to Jessica Tippett and Taylor Brown for providing oboe and flute music. Also, special thanks to Amy Cross who acted as cantor and soloist for the evening. The music for the evening was glorious!
On Friday, February 20 sixty advanced physics students from Petoskey High School visited Emmanuel for the annual demonstration of the pipe organ. The students learn the actual construction of the pipe organ, lesson on overtones, resonance, intervals, and timbre and frequency relationship to pitch. The lesson includes a tour of the inside of the organ chamber and finally, hearing music played on the organ. Joe Fortin provides this opportunity to the high school students each year, upon completion of their unit on "sound".
Most of us are aware of Carnegie Libraries which were made possible by gifts from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie between 1883 and 1929. Carnegie provided 2,509 libraries throughout the English speaking world, with 1,689 libraries in the United States. The reason I bring up the subject, Carnegie was also a great music lover, especially pipe organ music.

If a church wanted a pipe organ, but could not afford the total cost of an organ, they could apply to the Carnegie Foundation for a grant that would pay half the cost of a new pipe organ for the church. Andrew Carnegie was responsible for 7,689 pipe organs in the English speaking world, with 4,092 organs in the United States. The state of Michigan was the recipient of 47 Carnegie pipe organs. Andrew Carnegie believed a church with a pipe organ not only glorified God, but was also a gift and asset to be shared with the entire community through concerts and education!
MARCH BOOK CLUB NEWS
Julia Stuart is a British author and journalist. Her novel, published in 2010 "The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise" is our book club pick for March. (Those of you who might have the spread sheet of our full year of picks, will notice that this was originally our book for April, but we've done a switch)
Set in the popular tourist attraction in present-day London, The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise is an exquisite story of love, loss, and a one-hundred-eighty-one-year-old pet. Balthazar Jones has lived and worked in the Tower of London for the past eight years. Being a Beefeater is no easy job, and when Balthazar is tasked with setting up an elaborate menagerie of the many exotic animals gifted to the Queen, life at the Tower gets all the more interesting. Penguins escape, giraffes go missing, and the Komodo dragon sends innocent tourists running for their lives. Still, that chaos is nothing compared to what happens when his wife, Hebe, makes a surprise announcement. What's a Beefeater to do?

People Magazine said "this is a hilarious love story that will steal your heart."
Entertainment Weekly says "History buffs, animal lovers and simply the tenderhearted will swoon over this captivating story."
And The Denver Post says "A feather-light without being feather-brained. Julia Stuart has penned a work that is original and every-page amusing."
Join us Monday March 9. We'll be meeting at church in the Lottie Peterson Room from 7 - 9. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Turner at [email protected]

Our Diocese of Western Michigan has just finalized the
formation program for deacons, and I want to share with my
Emmanuel family that, after much prayerful consideration, I have
sent a letter to Bishop Whayne Hougland, requesting that I be
removed from the diaconal process - I am afraid the program and I
were not a good match.
My discernment experience of the past year has been an amazing
one, helped along by your prayers. While I am disappointed that this
did not work out, my listening and discernment journey continues
and I look forward to whatever God has in store for me and for
Emmanuel.
Again, much love and many thanks.

Pre-TLC March 13 - 15
"TLC" stands for "Training Leaders in Christ"; it is our summer week-long program for developing Christian leadership among high school youth. Pre-TLC is a weekend for middle-school and high-school youth to experience a short form of TLC. It is an exciting and engaging program of Christian life together - and a lot of fun spending two overnights at the church. Interested? Contact Claire Audia ([email protected]).

Tidbits are brought to you by a small group of your
parishioners that enjoy the traditions of the Book of Common
Prayer, 1928 Edition.
ACTION SYMBOLS IN WEEKLY USE
Any discussion of the symbols of the church must include the colors we see. And at Emmanuel we are surrounded by the seasonal colors of the church year. From the altar frontal to the great hangings on the north wall we proclaim the season in color.
Page 10 of 16Emmanuel Episcopal Church's March 2015 Harbinger Newsletter
2/24/2015file:///C:/Users/Leah/AppData/Local/Temp/Low/R1LY9SH8.htm
The colors of white-red-violet-green were "borrowed" from the contemporary Roman Catholicism. Many folks have a problem with two different seasons of the church year sharing the same color. But they don't seem to have a problem with white being shared between Christmas and Easter. And those are certainly two very different times in the church year!
As are Lent and Advent, but that sharing of seasonal colors is diverging. Deep purple or violet for lent symbolizing penance and mourning, with a light blue or even navy blue used during Advent, giving us a calmness of reflection in anticipation of a most joyous events.
With the current emphasis on Holy Communion as the norm for the worship experience, we rarely see the Celebrant robed in "choir dress" (black cassock and long white surplice) with just a stole or maybe even a plain black tippet. That however is the vesting for the Thursday Eucharist celebrated from the Book of Common Prayer, 1928 by Father Greg.

East and West with the wisdom of contemporary spiritual writers, poets and novelists in a practical format.
