This year our parish will be supporting Missio…. ‘build-your-own’ boxes will be available to take home

before Ash Wednesday…Please give generously!

Say what you mean and mean what you say…..

Last week we reflected on the Angelic Creatures – the Hosts and Powers of Heaven.

To the modern mind angels may seem a bit strange and yet our faith is adorned with them – They are part of Our Lord’s earthly life – we mention them at every Mass – they’re in the Bible…. We say we believe in them…..

In the Creed each Sunday we say we believe in the Resurrection of the Dead, but do you? What does it mean? When will it happen? How will it happen?

Sometimes, especially at Mass, we say things but do we mean them?

Truly believing something influences our behaviour…. For example the fact that we believe in the resurrection of the dead means that we bury they body, we have a grave, the grave faces the East because we believe that when Jesus returns (The Parousia) He will come from the East.

We consecrate the ground that the body is buried in and each year we bless the graves….all because of our belief in the resurrection of the dead.

It is for this reason that it is strictly forbidden for us to scatter the ashes of a person. Even when someone is cremated the ashes must be buried. To scatter the ashes of a person is to deny the need to bury them and in doing so, we deny our belief in the Resurrection of the Dead.

Year C

Confiteor I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Gloria in excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father, AMEN. Amen.

The First Reading Jeremiah 17:5-8 The Lord says this: ‘A curse on the man who puts his trust in man, who relies on things of flesh, whose heart turns from the Lord. He is like dry scrub in the wastelands: if good comes, he has no eyes for it, he settles in the parched places of the wilderness, a salt land, uninhabited. ‘A blessing on the man who puts his trust in the Lord, with the Lord for his hope. He is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foliage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit. Psalm: Happy the man who has placed his trust in the Lord! Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:12,16-20 If Christ raised from the dead is what has been preached, how can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead? For if the dead are not raised, Christ has not been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, you are still in your sins. And what is more serious, all who have died in Christ have perished. If our hope in Christ has been for this life only, we are the most unfortunate of all people. But Christ has in fact been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. Alleluia!

Entrance antiphon: (Psalm 30) Be my protector O God, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold, lead me, guide me, for the sake of your Name.

The Gospel Luke 6:17,20-26 Jesus came down with the Twelve and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: ‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied. Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh. Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets. ‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now. Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep. ‘Alas for you when the world speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets’.

Credo I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Act of Faith before Holy Communion:

O my God, I firmly believe that by the words of consecration spoken during Mass, bread truly becomes the Body of Christ and wine His most Precious Blood, and that Your Divine Son is

offered to You upon the altar under appearances representing that

separation of His Body and Blood which took place on

Calvary. Therefore, I believe with my whole heart, that this holy Victim is the same as that of the cross, whom I am about to receive, in order to unite my sacrifices to His own, by immolating myself with Him for Thy glory. Amen.

Prayer after receiving Holy Communion:

O my God, as you have given yourself to me, now let me give myself to You.

I give you my body that I may be chaste and pure;

I give you my soul that I may be free from sin;

I give you my heart that I may always love you;

I give you every breath that I shall breathe, and especially my last;

I give you myself in life and in death That I may be Yours forever and ever

Amen.

Communion antiphon: (Psalm 77) They ate and had their fill, and what they craved the Lord gave them; they were not disappointed in what they craved.

With only 2 weeks to go before the beginning of Lent, we need to begin to think now about the ways we will keep the Sacred Season of Lent Holy this year. Here is a way of structuring the 6 weeks…

Next bible study: will be on Wednesday 27th February after the 0930 Mass at Sacred Heart. ALL WELCOME!

VIGIL MASS DURING LENT: The Confessional at St Joseph’s is not suitable for celebrating the Sacrament of Confession with true dignity. A suitable replacement is being looked into. As Lent is a time of penance and a time for Confessing (and Sacred Heart has a newly restored Confessional) all VIGIL MASSES during Lent (that is Sat evening Masses) will take place at Sacred Heart. Mass will also be preceded by a Holy Hour of Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, ending with Benediction.

Holy Mass during the sacred

Season of Lent

Lenten Activities in the Parish….

This year the parish will be supporting the work of ‘Missio’ which is the

Church’s official over-seas charity supporting health and education.

Make-your-own collection boxes will soon be available…

Tuesdays: Adoration 6pm Confessions 6pm Holy Mass 7pm Formation session after Mass Fridays: The Stations of the Cross

after both Masses Saturdays: Holy Hour 4:30pm Confessions 4:30pm

Benediction 5:15pm Vigil Mass at SH 5:30pm

Mass is very different during Lent. Lent is a Penitential time for Catholics. We deny the self for the Lord. This is reflected in the Liturgy at Mass. Here are the main differences:

• There is no entrance Hymn: Instead of the hymn we will say (or sing) the entrance antiphon, followed by the ‘Glory Be’ and then we repeat the antiphon.

• The Penitential Rite: takes place at the foot of the altar. We all kneel down for the Penitential Rite and Fr John will lead us in singing the Kyrie.

• There is no Gloria in excelsis Deo • There is no ‘Alleluia’: The alleluia is replaced

by the ‘Praise to you O Christ’. • There is an offertory hymn, but no hymn

during Holy Communion • There will be no flowers in the church.

In an act of penance, we ‘fast’ from these things at Mass so that when they return at Easter we will value them more and even take notice of them!

During our Kid’s Club session on Saturday we began to look at the Creation Account Revealed to us in the Book of Genesis.

We learnt that the word ‘Genesis’ means ‘beginning’.

We watched a short YouTube film about Genesis and we also looked at what the Church and all the saints have believed about Creation for more than 2,000 years.

We also looked at what Science has to say about the way life began….The Big Bang Theory and Evolution.

Then we spent time thinking about the ways God communicates to us. We said the main ways are:

• Prayer • The Sacraments • The world • Other people • The Holy Bible

Then we thought about communication and how we communicate to others. Then we each built our own crystal radio sets looking at how radios communicate news, information, music and other things of interest, helping us to communicate with each other.

We ended our time together with 15mins of prayer and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church reminding ourselves that going to Adoration and being in the Real Presence of Jesus (under the appearance of ‘Bread’) is the best way for Him to communicate with us and us with Him.

The next Kid’s Club will take place at 10am on Saturday 9th March
