This year, the Retail Federation estimates that spending for Father’s Day is expected to reach$12.7 billion for “golf lessons, home improvement tools, coffee mugs, and more.”

According to a survey of 6,087 by the NRF, individuals are expected to spend around $115.57, almost thesame as last years average of $113.80. Also according to the survey, 75.4 percent of Americans plannedto celebrate the holiday today.

Father’s Day is “the fourth largest card sending holiday in the United States, with 80 million cardsexchanged annually,” according to the company. Although most cards are purchased forfathers, they are also purchased for husbands.

Father’s Day became an official holiday on July 19, 1910, mandated by the Governor of WashingtonState, but did not become celebrated until 1972 when Woodrow Wilson created Mother’s Day that theholiday was actually celebrated, according to the Network.History

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church was the first to have a Father’s Day celebration with a Sundaysermon that honored 362 men who had died in a mine explosion. Following that first event, a womannamed Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for an official Father’s Day and was successful whenWashington celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day.

Now, the holiday is always celebrated on the third Sunday of June, by millions of Americans across theUnited States.
