Standing up for WhittierTRANSCRIPT
Whittier ProposalPrepared for: Jean-Claude Brizard, CEOPrepared by: Tim Furman, Chicago Resident
June 24, 2011Proposal number: 1
Dear Mr. Brizard:
You may not be aware that Architecture for Humanity Chicago recently won second place in the Chicago
Area Clean Air Design Challenge “The Air We Breathe.” If you haven’t checked out the plan, please go online:
it’s available here: http://tinyurl.com/6a2cd8e.
I urge you to halt the CPS plan to displace the special education students at Whittier Dual Language Com-
munity School in Pilsen. You yourself have talked about the two-tiered education system that has emerged in
this city; here’s a chance to work with an active community school group that has specific goals for the chil-
dren in their care.
If cost is your only concern, then I believe that the Whittier Parent Committee can show you a persuasive
case that their plan costs less than the plan that you are currently implementing, that nobody at Whittier
wants, and that represent the kind of top-down decision-making process that has served Chicago poorly.
Please go meet with the Whittier Parent Committee-- Halt the construction, and go meet.
