OBITUARY

Fires are raging in Arizona and the western states. The human drama of the fire around Mayer and other small Yavapai County towns is a close reminder of

the destructive fires we in the Copper Basin suffered not once, but twice. This is an especially hot summer. The afternoon breezes have accelerated moisture loss, making fire conditions worse. We don’t live in a forest in our part of Arizona, but we still could learn a few things from those who do. People in Pine, Strawberry, and Payson clear the area around their

Summer Heat in the Copper Corridorhouses from all flammable materials. Yes, they deal with pine needles, but also with lumber piles and wood piles and weeds and grass. Except for pine needles, we have everything to cause a house fire to spread to other homes. Break out those work gloves, and remember that Kearny’s transfer station is open early Saturday morning, July 8. The Family Night at the Kearny pool last week was so successful that another has been set for this Saturday, July 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is only $5 per family, and swim passes are honored. The lifeguards have started a small concession stand, and there will be music. It is encouraging that so many people are working to support the pool. Supporters include the Copper Basin Health Volunteers at $2,000, local businesses providing snacks and towels, and several individuals and families who are “adopting” children by providing pool passes. One family even has a rivalry going their son and daughter come with their parents in generosity. On top of all that,

the Kearny Elks Lodge 2478 acquired a grant of $1,250 for passes, equipment, and lifeguard shirts. Way to go,

Use summer to prepare your child for kindergarten successSAN MANUEL (June 27, 2017) – All parents want their young child to be ready when they start kindergarten. Families can use the summer time leading to the big first day to help kids develop basic skills to build on and prepare them for the transition to kindergarten. Families can use fun, everyday activities to help kids be ready for success in kindergarten. Below are some tips from First Things First to help your family have a fun, easy transition to kindergarten:• Read with your child at least 20 minutes per day. Try books that repeat words; involve activities like counting, identifying colors, objects or letters; or, are about things your child likes. Ask questions like, “What do you think happens next?” • Talk with your child everywhere – at home, in the car, at the store. Make up stories or songs about your outings.• Writing begins with scribbling. Give your child safe writing tools to play with, like crayons, chalk or markers and blank paper. Ask your child to tell you about their drawings.• Teach your child how to use the bathroom by themselves, to wash their hands after going to the bathroom and before eating, to blow their nose and sneeze into their elbow. Before the first day, talk with your child about what to expect during the school day and types of after-school activities they may be involved in. The more details kids know, the less anxious they will feel. Rehearse for the big day with test-runs of the new routine, which will include:• Choosing what to wear the night before. • Waking up with early to have plenty of time to get ready. • Eating a healthy breakfast. • Walking to the bus stop and talking about boarding and where to sit. • Practicing how to open parts of lunch, whether it’s a carton of milk or a small bag of carrots. Remind them that teachers or lunch staff can help if needed. Even if you don’t have kindergartners this year, it’s never too early to start helping kids prepare. Children who have positive early childhood experiences tend to score higher on school readiness assessments and are more likely to do well in school and graduate. By turning everyday moments into learning moments, we can send our young kids to school with the skills – and the love of learning – that will help them succeed in kindergarten and beyond! About First Things First – First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit firstthingsfirst.org.

Summertime is a great time to get your child ready for kindergarten.

Located at 160 Main St. is the Rolling Rock Gallery and Copper Triangle Mining Services. The store features a gift shop along with a mining supply and

employment services center. The business and building is owned by Debra and David Knight who purchased the building in 2005. The Knights decided to purchase the building to expand their mining employment and supply business to Superior. The Knights, expanded their business to Superior from Nevada. The day to day operations of the store are managed by Kathy Long with the assistance of Toni Lopez. Originally the store was located on Magma Ave. The Knights have sold their building on Magma but still own the building on Main St. Longtime locals will remember the building as the home of the Wings Market and Cafe or Ron’s Market. The Rolling Rock gift shop is very unique to the area. “There is a little bit of everything,” said store manager Kathy Long. The store has a wide variety of merchandise from fun and playful hats for adults and kids to educational toys and puppets. There is also lots of local art work, housewares, wind chimes and even some clothing. It is a also a great place to find local souvenirs of Superior as they cary an assortment of post cards, mugs and t-shirts. During the holidays, their inventory changes to include many types of Christmas ornaments and Halloween decor. There is something for everyone at the Rolling Rock Gallery; stop in and just the friendly greetings from Kathy and Toni will brighten up your day. The mining supply store has everything someone might need for mining, from core sample boxes and maps to safety equipment. They can also order supplies that someone may need. The Copper Triangle also offers temporary job services, those looking for a job can go in and leave an application for an employers. Many of the local mines and other employers use the hiring service to hire temporary employees. That is the busiest aspect of their business. Local businesses owners may also want to consider contracting their employment through Copper Triangle. They do job placement for all kinds of jobs and they are not limited to only mining employment. Be responsible when helping wildlife cope with high temps, AZGFD says TUCSON, Ariz. – Weeks of sustained temperatures nearing or over 100 degrees Fahrenheit has led some area residents to take pity on local wildlife by providing them with food and water. However, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is cautioning residents that such resources will attract wildlife that may then come into conflict with people. In addition, feeding prey species will eventually attract predatory wildlife, which may also take advantage of unsecured pets and poultry in yards. Feeding wildlife, other than birds and tree squirrels, is unlawful in Pima, Pinal, and Maricopa counties. The maximum penalty for the offense is a $300 fine. “If people are intent on helping wildlife through this hot, dry period, we recommend providing only water in shallow bowls or saucers, and cleaning the dishes out every two days, until the monsoon rains ease the extreme weather conditions,” said Urban Wildlife Specialist Locana de Souza of Game and Fish in Tucson. AZGFD Regional Supervisor Raul Vega noted that most desert wildlife is adapted to extreme heat. “The heat impacts birds and rabbits the most,” Vega said. “Don’t place water for them too close to homes, and keep birdbaths and hummingbird feeders full if you have them.” The Arizona Game and Fish Department has trust responsibility for managing more than 800 native wildlife species – the most of any inland state – for current and future generations of Arizona citizens. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/northamericanmodel.shtml

Public NoticeOpportunity to Comment on Apache

Leap Special Management Area The Tonto National Forest, Supervisor’s Office, is preparing a management plan for the congressionally designated Apache Leap Special Management Area (SMA), located in Pinal County, 65 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona. The purpose of the proposed action is to develop and adopt long-range direction for managing the natural resources and human uses of the Apache Leap SMA consistent with Section 3003 of the Carl Levin and Howard P. ‘Buck’ McKeon National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015 (NDAA) (Public Law [PL] 113–291). Approval of the Apache Leap management plan requires a concurrent forest plan amendment to add or modify one or more plan components, or to change where one or more plan components apply (36 CFR § 219.13(a)).The 1985 Tonto Land and Resource Management Plan would be amended to: 1) include the Apache Leap SMA as a new management area (MA 2G Globe Ranger District - Apache Leap SMA); 2) modify the description and acreage of the former management area (MA 2F Globe Ranger District – General Management Area); and 3) incorporate new plan components that were developed to meet the primary purpose of the special management area. These plan components comprise chapter three of the proposed Apache Leap SMA management plan. The latest version of the proposed Apache Leap SMA management plan is available to review online at: [http://www.apacheleapsma.us/public-involvement] The new plan components that comprise the proposed forest plan amendment address various substantive requirements found at 36 CFR 219.8 thru 219.11 for managing the multiple uses and resources of a designated area. How to Comment and TimeframeWe would like to hear your comments about amending the forest plan using the plan components identified for the management of the Apache Leap Special Management Area, a congressionally designated area as identified at 36 CFR 219.10 (b). The 30-day comment period for this proposed amendment begins on the day after publication of this notice in the Arizona Capitol Times, the official newspaper of record, on June 30, 2017. This comment period is provided pursuant to 36 CFR 219.16(a)(2). Comments received in response to this notice, including names and addresses of those who comment, will be considered part of the public record on this project and will be available for public inspection. Electronic comments must show name and address of submitter. Comments submitted anonymously will be accepted and considered. Additionally, any persons may request the agency to withhold a submission from the public record by showing how the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) permits such confidentiality (7 CFR 1.27(d)).Written comments may be submitted in one of three ways – via US mail: Apache Leap SMA, PO Box 34468, Phoenix, AZ 85067-4468; using electronic inbox: [email protected]; or in person: (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays) at 2324 E. McDowell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85006.Decisions Will Be Subject To ObjectionThe decision to approve the management plan for the Apache Leap SMA and concurrently amend the 1985 Tonto Land and Resource Management Plan is subject to the objection procedures identified in 36 CFR part 219 subpart B. According to 36 CFR 219.53(a), those who may file an objection are individuals and entities who have submitted substantive formal comments during opportunities provided for public comment during the planning and environmental review process for the decision. Only those who provide a substantive formal comment, as defined in 36 CFR 219.62, will be eligible to object to the proposed decision. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is an equal opportunity provider and employer.MINER, CBN, SUN Legal 7/5/17

people! The local Mayors’ Meeting has proven itself by growing to include the towns of Globe and Miami. Its next meeting is Tuesday, July 11, in Globe. The mayors of the towns and occasionally town staff take part. San Manuel has a full day, Saturday, July 8, devoted to showing personal and financial support for the

San Manuel Summer Softball program. A double elimination horseshoe tournament begins at noon (sign ups close a half hour earlier) at $20 per team. The softball tournament goes through the day, and a steak dinner will take place at the field from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. or plates can be picked up. The cost is $10 a plate, and $6 a plate for children under 12. Need more information? Call 520-345-7660. Area residents Kira Granillo, Leysa Rought, and Veronica Bracamonte took part in a gathering sponsored by Local First Arizona, the Copper Corridor Economic Development Corporation, and the South Gila County Economic Development Corporation. The meeting was about people coming together in cooperative ways to develop the local and regional economy. The three women are working to gather interested people to explore and develop economic opportunities for all kinds of products and services. Contact one of the three for more information. Finally, congratulation to the Board of the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) for electing and swearing in Anna Flores, Kearny’s Town Manager, to serve with them. And for all of us, use sun screen and stay hydrated!

dust can drop visibility to zero, as if every motorist is driving blind. Just as dangerous are the small dust channels that can whip across roadways in an instant, affording drivers little or no opportunity to avoid them. In such events, ADOT has developed the following “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” dust storm safety driving tips, which can help travelers survive a storm.· Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.· If you encounter a dust storm, immediately check traffic around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.· Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway – do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.· Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane. Look for a safe place to pull completely off the paved portion of the

roadway.· Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers. You do not want other vehicles approaching from behind to use your lights as a guide, possibly crashing into your parked vehicle.· Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.· Stay in the vehicle with your seat belt buckled and wait for the storm to pass.· Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds. ADOT uses an array of tools to alert motorists to severe weather events that can impact travel, including posting messages on overhead signs, the 511 travel information line and social media. During dust storms, ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center staff is in constant communication with crews and law enforcement officers in the

field, as well as partnering agencies, to keep current information flowing to travelers. That information will improve soon. Later this year construction is scheduled to begin on a first-of-its-kind dust detection zone on Interstate 10 between Eloy and Picacho. The $12.8 million project, funded in part by a FASTLANE grant from the Federal Highway Administration, includes placement of multiple short-range dust-detection units between mileposts 209-219, plus one long-range unit. More information on dust storm safety can be found at PullAsideStayAlive.com and safety tips for driving in rainstorms can be found at azdot.gov/monsoon. Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Travel Information Center at az511.gov, by calling 511 and through ADOT’s Twitter feed @ArizonaDOT.

Eight local students from Superior High School left on Saturday for a seven-day trip to the Family Career Community Leaders of America National Competition. These SHS students each earned their trip to Nashville by competing in the State FCCLA Competition. The club members will compete against FCCLA chapters from all over America. Included in the conference is leadership development for the students and the

opportunity to participate in organized tours of Nashville. Funds for the trip were provided by the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology and the parents of the student. FCCLA is one the Career Technical Edu-cation student groups that is supported by CVIT and the Superior Unified School District. Students in the club host various community and school events each year. Their main event is the Cancer Fight by Candlelight event held each Spring.
