    WOMAN'SD

During a recent game between twoof Brazil's biggest football teams, the country's top striker head-butted an opponent and was sentoff. 'ldiot,' he shouted at thereferee. 'Just what you wouldexpect from a woman.' lt was thiscomment rather than hisaggression to his opponent thatreally landed him in trouble. Hewas punished for this by beingbanned from the next fourmatches. The target of his venom,Gisele Fabio, has become the mosthigh-profile woman in Brazilianfootball.Times are changing in Britishfootball, too. Not long ago themanager of a Scottish team wasforced to resign after criticising thecountry's first woman referee bysaying: 'l knew it wasnt going tobe our day when I found out wehad a woman running the line. Sheshould be at home making the teaor the dinner for her man after hehas been to the football. This is aprofessional man's game.' Anattitude like this may have beenrelatively common a fewgenerations ago, but over the lastdecade or two the vast majority of

men have changed theirview of the place awoman should have insociety.Annie Macntosh hasbeen a referee for sixyears and is currentlythe highest level female official inBitain. During her rise to thisposition, she has learnt to betolerant of criticism, and not tobecome excited or get offended byhurtful verbal attacks. She takesthe comments with a pinch of salt.'He is entitled to say what he likes. There is no point getting yourselfall upset. From the experiencesthat I have had he is in theminority.'

You have to develop a thick skin asa female referee in the men'ss4 game. ln spite of all this, Macintoshsays that being a woman on thefield can have its advantages too. Many men consider it wrong to usebad language in front of women.'Sometimes you get the odd idiotwho shouts something, but usuallythey use less colourful language. They behave better. One team

coach told me he wanted me toreferee another game at that clubto improve the players' behaviour.'The confusion, she adds, also hasits comic moments. Fans have notupdated their vocabulary to takeaccount of female officials.Macintosh says she finds t

funniest when spectators suddenlybecome aware that she is a womanand become tongue-tied. 'A voicein the crowd will shout, "Oi,linesmanl I mean lineswomanErm, I mean assistant referee "'While it is unlikely that a womanfootballer will have the physicalstrength to compete at the top levelin a men's team, there is no similarobstacle to women refereeingmen's football. ln fact, theauthorities running Europeanfootball are actively encouragingwomen referees, believing it helpsincrease women's interest infootball generally.ln Brazil, Gisele Fabio says the pathto becoming a referee has beenabout breaking down culturalrather than legal barriers. 'For aslong as l'm aware there have beenno rules against women refereeingthe men's game. lt was just thatnone did.' Fabio agrees thatfootballers treat female refereesdifferently. 'ln principle they treatyou with more respect. They arescared that you will give them acard more readily. This is anadvantage for us.' Mostimpressively, Fabio has been top ofthe referee rankings published bydaily sports papers. 'l think I wasfirst because I am a novelty. ButI don't think I am better than theothers. My refereeing is the same.'

A A central console between the windows is where you actually do yourshopping.B The first thing you notice are the two large display windows which areabsolutely packed with goods.C Older customers in particular may find the experience cold and impersonal, but a younger generation may respond more positively.D The real question is whether, over the three-month testing period, enoughpeople will overcome their doubts and start shopping here in significantnumbers.E For security reasons, you have to do this before the robot arm startsgathering your goods.F Many shops like these only survive because they stay open late, or even

round the clock in some cases.G Experience with similar mechanised service equipment, such as cashdispensers, suggest that there are considerable advantages for bothcustomers and shop owners.H The challenge is to create a piece of machinery which will be delicate enoughto pick up eggs but at the same time strong enough to pick up bottles ofmineral water and baked bean cans.

Running for fUnA Peter GhamberlainI was always keen on sports. Running a long distance is abit like life too.You start with a sense of anticipation, yougo through some great highs and terrible lows, but in theend it seems to be worth it.There s nothing that I enloymore than a good workout at the gym or a good one-hourrun across the local wildlife reserve. Fortunately, where Ilive, I can reach the open countryside in just a couple ofminutes on foot from my front door step. ln my case, participation in the London Marathon was not aboutwinning, it was about doing the best you possibly can. Myfirst marathon was a disaster. Everything was going fineuntil the twelfth mile when I started to feel a bit of fatiguekicking in and hit the wall between the fourteenth andfifteenth miles.B Rosalind MastersonI surprised myself by doing so well,to tell you the truth. ltall started when a friend of mine was training for themarathon and asked me to join her a few mornings aweek. I didnt think I was very fit when I started, althoughyears ago ld go cycling three times a week and jogging atweekends. I found the experience enjoyable but realised Ipreferred logging on my own. Success depends a lot onyour mood. Last year, for example, I was feeling verystressed for one reason or another, and I got tired muchmore quickly; I didnt even get to the end of the courseThis year's been completely different. London was such asuccess that I've entered for the Berlin Marathon nextmonth, along with three friends. My husband thinks I'mmad, though when we watched the news that night and hecould see my face among the crowds, he was fairlyimpressed.

C Ruth WatsonLong distance running is not about how fast you can run,it's about how much pain you can take. Long distancerunning is a good discipline for life itself. I run with my headand my heart, because physically I dont think I've got agreat deal of talent or ability. I was always a very energetcsports person and I have entered the marathon five timesso far. Last year I managed to complete a half marathon in90 minutes, which was quite an accomplishment forsomeone who did not train systematically. One thing thatannoyed me in my last marathon was the attitude ofpeople watching. They took more interest in the fun-runners and celebrities than in the battle of the eliterunners chasing qualification times for the OlympicGames.D John SaddlerAn old friend of mine has been a member of a jogging clubfor years, and he finally persuaded me to go along with himone Saturday to see if I would enjoy it. Well, I felt fairlygood afterwards, so I joined the club and started thinkingseriously about running. I thought that entering for themarathon would give me a unique opportunity to raisesome caslr for the Red Cross. ln fact, four of us from theoffice decided to do the same thing, and between us weraised over f25,000, which was great Running wasnt ashard as I expected.Training can be difficult, especially whenit means I have to drag myself out of bed on cold wintermornings and go jogging in the pouring rain. I never trainwith friends because I find it impossible to concentrate onwhat I'm doing.
