Community defined is: unified body of individuals. To be a community is to put effort into being united. Suggestions on becoming a united community are welcoming new members and offering help, protecting the welfare and property of your neighbors and showing an interest in your neighbors lives and well being.

1. Put out the welcome mat.

Forest Chase is an ever changing environment with the sale of houses and new residents moving into our community. This fluctuation in residents leaves us not knowing who is living among us. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to a new neighbor. Watch the moving trucks and for sale signs and drop by for a “welcome to the neighborhood” greeting opportunity. Tell the new resident about our website. www.ForestChase.org There is a welcome page for download that will help them find the government sites, utilities and so much more that will make the move easier.

2. Keep a watchful eye.

When someone works outside the home and you see a strange car in the driveway, text your neighbor and ask if they are expecting someone different. If you observe strange or suspisious behavior why not take a picture with your cell and save it, should some crime arise. Never involve yourself in a dangerous situation, if the need arises call 911. Forest Chase is a posted neighborhood watch area. Keep up the great work!

3. Ask and offer help.

Is a neighbor sick? Do they need help? Our neighbor always loans us tools and we keep in touch. When she went in for major surgery it was easy for us to assist with the dog walking. What a gift it was for her.

Is the grass getting long and the mower is broken? Why not ask if they need help, and offer to mow it one time, you never know if they are just having a hard time keeping up with the Jones.

Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, Secretary, FCHOA & Atlanta Audubon Master Birder

Insects in Forest ChaseSummer is the time for insects in Forest Chase, and there’s more to it than slapping mosquitos. Here are some of the insects I enjoy most in Forest Chase.

Fireflies What a summertime joy! This has been a great year for fireflies. Fireflies are a type

of beetle, and there are many different kinds of them; over 170 in North America. The most common

in Forest Chase are Common Eastern Fireflies. You can spot these because they light up as they fly a J-shaped pattern. There are other kinds as well. This year, I have many fireflies in my trees with a strobe-like flash that make the trees twinkle beautifully.

Butterflies

Over 160 different kinds of butterflies have been recorded in Georgia. “Butterflies of Georgia” by Jaret Daniels is a great field guide. I see lots of Gulf Fritillaries, Eastern Swallowtails, and Silver-Spotted Skippers in my yard. Use lots of flowers in your landscape to attract these summer beauties. Keep in mind that some insecticides kill butterflies, and that by killing that caterpillar munching your

garden you are killing the butterfly it will become.

Dragonflies

This summer, we have more dragonflies at the pool than I have ever seen. They are primarily Blue Dashers, which are common in Georgia. Look

closely to see their clear-and-amber wings and turquoise eyes. These bold little critters make a lot of folks laugh as they

perch on swimmer’s heads and sunbather’s toes. Dragonflies are predators of small insects and are harmless to people.

Cicadas Cicadas will be cranking up soon in Forest Chase. Cicadas spend most of their lives underground (1-17 years, depending on species) and then molt into the noisy tree dwellers we hear in late summer. My favorite cicada name is “Scissor-Grinder Cicada”, because of their loud, grating, buzzy calls. My ever-accommodating family is used to me listening to cd’s of twittering birds and ribbitting frogs, but understandably drew the line when I tried to learn cicada calls!

Have a great summer.

Annual dues can be paid on January 1 of any year, online or by mail. However, time seems to slip away from busy families and we forget to pay and register for pool priviledges. The FCHOA hosted a Cinco de Mayo party in an effort to get families out to register and socialize. What a success!

Forest Chase Spring ImprovementsSewer retrofit work done by Cobb County turned out to be a plus for Forest Chase common property. Trees that were dead and in the way of the flow of water were cut down and removed. New grass seed and granite on the edges of the creek were put in place to help with erosion. Thanks to Cobb County for all of their hardwork!

The trees lining the Jims Rd. entrance island were getting too large and the weight on the limbs posed a dangerous risk to passing cars. Since storm season was upon us the FCHOA Board of Directors voted to have them

trimmed back and a raised plant bed installed to help with seasonal flower planting. The result is a clean, safe and more inviting entrance. We look forward to this area being better maintained with the help of civic dues from our supporting members. Thank you for helping make Forest Chase a great place to call home!

The pool gate has to close after every opening for liability coverage and ours wasn’t. We were fortunate enough to have handyman Sean Backus figure out that the gate support bars need to be reset in concrete to properly support the weight and usage. He also cleaned out the french drain system to help water flow from the deck out to the grass area.

Open 10:30-5:30 weekdays. Fri and Sat 10-6. Closed Sundays.

Forest Chase is fortunate to have a community pool and common area that the members of FCHOA own and maintain. All monies collected are used to maintain the entrances and this common area for the benefit of the community of members.

Upkeep and repair

Our annual cleanup day was a success due to the help of committed members of FCHOA. We washed loungers, chairs, tables and bathrooms.

The grounds were hired out to the Camacho Brothers who continue to amaze and impress us with their fair prices and hardwork!

New additions at the common area

Last season the Ralston family donated a new tetherball for our pole. The children continue to join in a game when they get together!

The Taibi family renovated the coolest basketball hoop in all the land for our community. The Forest Chase basketball hoop was installed at the beginning of the pool season and is a HUGE hit

among all ages. We’ve seen games of “H-O-R-S-E” and small teams sprouting up to burn some calories this summer season. Thanks Taibi family for seeing a need and filling it. Be sure to look for the Teen Pool Party Invite in this Summer Issue.

Member Owned Land

The common area which extends from the parking lot to the opposite side of the creek and out to the street of Forest Way is all FCHOA owned land. What does this mean? It means it is

private property belonging to it’s membership. It is the FCHOA’s responsibility to upkeep and maintain this land and it’s contents. NOT the Board of Director’s responsibility but the

COMMUNITY as a whole, this includes YOU.

If you are a pool member then the pool belongs to YOU and the other members. Please remember this when you observe a pool rule being misused. Check the bathrooms, help to keep them clean, this is YOUR pool. Put umbrellas down and replace chairs after use, this is YOUR pool. Clean up food and trash when you get ready to leave, this is YOUR pool.

New Furniture

We purchased four new marine grade tables, chairs, umbrella stands and umbrellas! Wow, what a beautiful difference these make on the pool deck. The pool deck is a non-smoking area so the older tables and chairs were moved to have seating near the pool on the outside of the gate. We hope to treat this furniture well so it can last for many years to come. We are still hunting for a large wooded shed to install on the common area property to store furniture and property.

Please contact [email protected] with any ideas, leads or discounts on this BIG purchase. We’d like to have it installed and ready to go by September 1, 2014!

Spring storms lifted this open umbrella and damaged it. Please close them.

There are many signs posted in Forest Chase subdivision stating that there is NO PARKING on the street between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm. PLEASE pay attention to these areas as they are blind spots or dangerous hills and curves that could lead to a collision or injury if not observed. This includes vendors that are doing work on or at your home. Ask them to park on another street or in your driveway. Help make Forest Chase a safe place to call home.
