01 - GENERAL
A ILS CAT II . CAT III DEFINMONS
The following definitions are taken from the French regulations, which are in compliancewith the recommendation ol ICAO Annex 10 for Category ll and lll operations.
a. Category ll Precision Approach
An electronically guided final approach conducted to a decision height of 100 to 200 ftwith a runway visual range (RVR) providing an acceptable probability of obtainingadequate visual reference to conlrol lhe aircraft lor continuing the approach, roll-outand clearing.
b. Decision Height (OH) - CAT ll
The lowesl height measured by a radio altimeter at which a go-around procedure mustbe initiated if :
- visual relerences are not obtained or are inadequate to ensure a successful approachand landing ;
- or taking into account the available environmental visual references, the position orthe track of the aircraft are such that they jeopardize the success ol the end of theapproach and ubsequent landing.
(The Cat ll DH shouH be not less than 125 % of the Minimum Use Height certificatedlor the AFS).
c. Runway Visual Range (RVR) - CAT ll/lll
The maximum visibility in the direction of takeoff or landing lrom a specific point onthe axis of the runway at a height is corresponding to the average eye level of the pilotat touch down.
In practice, the minimum R\4l value for each landing category is determined in srcha way thal the probability of obtaining adequate visual references lor the end of theapproach is high.

d. Category lll Precision Approach With Decision Height
An electronically guided final approach conducted to a decision height of 0 to 100 ftwith a RVR providing an acceptable probability of visual contact at the DH and thepossibility of controlling the aircraft manually during roll-out and clearing.
e. Minimum Approach Break-off Height (MABH)
The lowest height of the wheels above the ground such that il a go-around is initiatedwithout external visual references :
- in normal operation, the aircraft does not touch the ground during the procedure
- with critical engine failure during go-around, it can be demonsirated that takingaccount of this failure probability, an accident is extremely improbable.
(For 1r,310 and 4300-600, MABH has been determined to be 15 ft).
l. Decision Height CAT llt
The height of the wheels above the ground read on a radio ahimeter, at which ago-around must be initiated if :
- there are no external references :
- or the external references have not enabled confirmation that the aircraft is correctlypositioned and tracking in relation to the runway.
g. Fail-passive Automatic landing System
An auto landing system is fail-passive if in the event ol failure it disengages without anysignificant deviation of trim, flight path or attitude. After a lailure either the landing iscompleted manually, or a manual go-around is executed il visr.ral references are notsufficient.
h. Fail-operational Automatic l-anding System
An auto landing system is fail-operational if in the event of failure the operation can becontinued by the remaining part ol the system.

i. Alert Height (of failoperational syslems)
The height of the wheels above the ground above which a go-around would be initiatedif a failure occured in one part of the syslem.
Below this height the probability of a failure is such that if part of the system fails theoperation can be continued by the remaining part while complying with the safetycriteria (i.e. the height below which the risk of a double lailure can be considered asextremely improbable).
(For A310 and A300-600, alerl height is 't00 ft).
l. Relationship Between DH And Minimum RVR
1. GENEML
The visual reference required by a pilot at and below DH depends on the task thathe has to carry out.Research using simulators and flight irials has shown that in general :
- visual contact needs to be eslablished about 3 sec. above DH to enableassessment of the exlernal references and evaluation ol the flight path in relationto those references ; the duration of this decision process reduces to about 1 sec.when a fail-operational automatic landing system is used.
- to eslablish lateral position and cross-track velocity, not less than 3 axial lightsegments ot the approach lights, runway centreline or edge lights shouH bevisible.
- lo maintain a lateral level, a cross-bar of the approach lights, threshoH or TDZlights should be visible.
- to control the flight path in the vertical plane, including the flare, using purelyexternal cues, a point on the ground which has a low or zero rate of apparentmovement relative to the aircrafl (i.e. the aiming point) shouH be visible.

2. CATEGORY II
For CAT ll operations, Ref. 6 specifies the following minimum visual segments :
auiomalic to touch down or manual .. . . . . . . . . . . 90 mautomatic to DH ... . . . . . . 120 m
The geometry of the 1300-600 in the average approach attitude is such thatat 100 ft a visual segment of 120 m is obtained when the fonvard visibility fromcockpit to ground is 278 m (See Fig. 1).

2. CATEGORY il (END)
Since it is unusual for a fog to be perfectly homogoneous there is normally adiflererence between the RVR and the "slant visual range" SVR from cockpit toground. ln stable fog conditions with surface visibilities greater than 600 m. The fogdensity normally increases with height above ground, in which case the SVR at DHis less lhan the RVR. However in the range below RVR 600 m. not only is therelation RVR and SVR variable and difficult to predict, but also there may be rapidand localised reductions in visibility.Since there is as yet not practicable way of measuring the SVR at DH, for regulatorypurposes il is necessary to determine a value of RVR which will provide anadequate visual segment at DH with an acceptably high probability.
For this purpose it has been established that the use of the lollowing values ofminimum RVR in actual CAT 1l operations has resulted in an observed approachsuccess rate bdter than 95 % :

3. CATEGORY III WT}.I DECISION HEIGHT
With a failoperational landing system, CAT lll operations can be conducted with aDH below 50 tt (ICAO Cat lll B). The DH is required to be not less lhan ihe MABHwhich for the 4300-600, using auto go-around mode, has been certificated as 6 ft.When the DH is in the landing flare, it shouH be below the height at which the pitchchanges mainly |ake place (Ref. 5).

3. CATEGORY lil WTH DECTSTON HETGHT (END)
For this category of operations, the visual segment at DH should be sufficient to :
- enable confirmation that the aircraft is correctly positioned relative to the TDZ ;- if fail-operation auto roll-out function not available', provide assurance that
references will be adequate for manually controlling the ground roll.
The minimum visual segment to lulfill these criteria has been established as60 m. (Ref. 1). At 15 ft. wheel height the SVR required to provide this visualsegment is 115 m (see Fig.2 below). lt isthereforeconsidered that for DH 15 ftan RVR of this order will provide srfficient visual references with an acceptablyhigh probability.

c. Airport Requirements CAT ll/lll
In order to be able to operate to Category ll or lll minima, the runway environment andthe ground equipment must be meet the applicable criteria, summarised below.
1. OBSTRUCT]ON CLEARANCE LrMrT (OCL)
- for any precision approach runway, the obstacle clearance must be consideredin the determination of DH and the related RVR.
- no obstacle should protrude through reference surfaces in the transition of missedapproach areas, nor should there be any obstacle within the Obstacle Free Zone.Exceptions are made for essential visual and electronic equipment.
- the detailed obstacle clearance criteria covering approach and go-around phasesare published in ICAO PAI.IS-OPS.
2. TERRAIN PROFILE
Under lhe approach path shouH be free of excessive uplor down-slopes anddiscontinuities, since the radio ahime, ter provides an input signal to the auto-pilot forgain programming during a coupled approach lrom 1000 ft and for pitch controlduring llare from about 50 ft. Before a runway is approved for Cat ll or llloperations, the terrain profile as well as the runway is investigated for its slitabilityin accordance with established criteria.Similarly lhe runway profile itsell musl be within specified limits.
Note that the radio altitude at DH published on the Cat llllll approach charts takesaccount of any difference between touch-down elevation and the level of terrainbelow the approach of the extendd centr+line.
3. ILS INSTALLATION PERFORMAAICE AA,ID RELIABILITY
Must conform to the appropriate specifications contained in ICAO Annex 10.

Localizer and glidepath antennae must be isolated within a defined area in orderto prevenl electromagnetic interterence of ILS signal transmissions. The associated"sensitive areas" musl be protected from incursions by taxying aircraft and vehicleswhen any automatic landing operation is in progress.
5. HIGH INTENSITY APPROACH LIGHT]NG
Should be provided ol which the lasl 300 metres musl conform to the specificationsot ICAO Annex 14 shown in Fig. 1. This is a recommendation for Cat lll, andmandatory for Cat ll.
6. RUNWAY LIGHNNG AND MARKINGS
Should conform to the specifications of Annex 14 and should include :
- white painted centre-line
- touchdown zone markings
- distance marks including a distance code
- runway threshold lights
- high intensity runway edge lights
- centr+line lights exlending over the full length of the runway with distance coding
- touchdown zone lights required for Cat lll but not mandatory for Cat ll"

These calls would normally be made by the pilot monitoring and acknowledged by thepilol al the controls. Howa/er any CM who sees a derriation outside the above limits shouldmake the appropriate call.lf any of these limits are exceeded approaching DH a go-around may be necessary.
ATC CALLS
Clearance to carry out a Cat ll or lll approach must be requested to Approach Control, who will check the status ol the ILS and lighting and protect the sensitive areas lromincursion by vehicles. Such an approach may not be undertaken until the clearance hasbeen received. Before the outer maker RVR values for touch-down, mid-runway and end-runway whereavailable, will be transrnitted. The approach chart will confirm the minimum values required.
sE/-T rcsff/oN
The correct seat adjustement is essential in order to take full advantage of the visibilityover the nose. The seat is correctly adjusted when the pilot's eyes are in line with thered and white balls.
USE OF LAI{DING LIGHTS
Al night in low visibility conditions can be detrimental to the acquisition of vislal references.Reflected light from water droplets or snow may actually reduce visibility.Landing lights wouH therefore not normally be used in Gat ll or lll weather conditions.

G. FAILURES AI.ID ASSOCIATED ACT]ONS
A summary of failure cases and associated actions is given in this section, based on thedetailed inlormation provided in the FCOM.
It shouH be noted that for some cases the actions presented in the chart have beensimplified for the sake of standardization.
ln general lhere are three possible responses to the lailure o{ any system, instrument orelement of the AFS duing the approach :
- CONTINUE the approach to the planned minima ;
- REVERT to higher minima and proceed to a new DH ;
- GO-AROUND and reassess the capability.
The nature ol the failure and the point of its occurence will determine which response isappropriate.
As a general rule, if a failure occurs above 1000 ft a.g.l the approach may be continuedrarerting to a higher DH, at the Captain's discretion and provided the appropriate conditionsare met (see nexl page, conditions lor Downgrading). In specific cases Cat ll status canbe restored by transler switching provided the failure occurs above 1000 ft.
Below 1000 ft (and down to 100 ft when configuration in fail-operational) the occurenceof any failure necessitates a go-around, if sufficient visual references not yet acquired, and a reassesment ol capability.
Another approach may then be undertaken to the appropriale minima lor the failure case.
When failoperational, in general a single failure below 100 ft does not necessitate ago-around, the lew exceptions to these rules are indicated in the chart.

H. DOWIGRADING CONDITIONS
Downgrading lrom Category lll to Category ll permitted only if :
- Decision to downgrade before 1000 ft AGL ;- At least SINGLE MODE available ;- RVR at leasl equal to Category ll minima ;- Procedure and Category ll minima have been included in approach briefing.
Downgrading from Category ll to Category I permitted only if :
- Decision to downgrade before 1000 ft AGL ;- At least F.D Mode available :- RVR at least equal to Category I minima ;- Procedure and Category I minima have been included in approach briefing.
NOTE : Switching from one AP to another permitted before 1000 ft AGL.
a. Slats/flaps not at 30"/40'
- Automatic landing has not been certificated for this configuration, but has beendemonstrated in 20"/20o configuration. The minima shouH therefore be raised to CAT l.However, in case ol operational necessity, the approach may be coupled down to100 ft, or for 20o120" to touchdown. The speed should be Vls for the actualconfiguralion.
b. Engine Failure
- The corresponding yaw damper may disconnect ;lf N'2 engine fails, AP2 may disconnect due to loss of yellow pressure (with mod.4941 only, if both AP remain engaged, disconnect 1 AP) ;
- ATS remains armed and engaged, (if batch C mods. are not incorporated, +eedholding may de degraded and manual throttle is recommended) ;
- Automatic yaw compensation for engine failure is provided by the rudder channeland yaw damper during approach and auto go-around until retraction of slats.

b. Engine Faibre (end)
lf the faifure occurs above 1000 ft :
- Normally time should be allowed to complete appropriate single-engine operationprocedure after ECAM ac{ions ;
- Approach may be continued automatically to Cat | " minima ; slowly increase thruston live engine by approx. 20% Nr or 0.1 EPR lo maintain Vls + 5 ;
- Rudder trim has no effect on rudder position when AP engaged with slats out, butthe selected trim input becomes effective as soon as AP is engaged.
lf the failure occurs between 1000 ft and 100 ft :
- lf insuflicient external references, make an automatic ao-around, perform ECAt\tactions and appropriate single-engine operation procedure. Another automaticapproach to Cat | ' minima may be made with the aircraft manually trimmed (UnlessBatch C mods are incorporated, manual throttle control is recommended).
lf the failure occurs at or below 100 ft :
- The automatic approach should be continued with ATS engaged.
At landing :
Batch C mods incorporated : may continue automatically, monitor auto roll-out.W'lthout batch C mods : disengage AP at touchdown.
Note that compliance with Cat ll or Cat lll performance criteria has not beendemonstrated with one engine inoperative.Autoland with one engine inoperative has been demonstrated but it is not certificated.ln case of operational necessity, the automatic approach may be continued to Cat tlminima rather than divert.

In the extremely remote case of a failure of the flare function which has not beendetected during the continuous internal test process, the action would be either toimmediately initiate a go-around or to flare manually using the available externalreferences. Since there is no supervisory override facility available in the LAND TRACKphase, the lorce required to override the autopilot in pitch (the break-out threshold) isapproximately 46 kg ; in order to flare manually, the AP must there{ore be disengaged.

especially the ILS of the R\lf/ in use (YAW-BAR lor T/O guidance).- An appropriate take-off alternate should be inserted in the SEC F/PLAN.
- Brief the crew that visibility will be reduced to zero on the take-off run toillustrate the effectiveness of the YAW-BAR.(NOTE : YAW-BAR will appear only if the ILS is availitble for the same R\Aff
direction)- Ask the PF to continue T/O for training pruposes, usirrg the YAW-BAR only.- Frwze SIM just prior to V1, increase visibility to shour aircraft on centerline,
then continue the take-off.
- Ensure that the crew can give a concise CAT 2 approach briefing..- Stress task sharing, weather minima, crew qualification, alternate planning,
fuel requirements, aircraft and airfield servicibility, SOP, flight decklightning, etc...
- Check crew seating position- LO or MED autobrake is recommended- Check autoland limitations and OEB's.

- Ensure that crew continues the approach- Insert "ZERO RVR" and check that GA with manual thrust is initiated at DH.- Restore A/THR for next approach
- Insert eng. failure at or below 100 ft (when viusal), and illustrate single eng.capability of the autopilot (CAT 3A).
- Autoland is allowed.
- lf ATT warning is inserted :- Check that PF is ONLY using STDBY HORIZON during GA.- Attitude warning must be analysed after GA.
- Captain's (CM1) failure to respond to standard call-out is to be consideredas his incapacitation.
- Once the incapacitation has been established the CM2 must make a goaround.
- Insert engine failure at 500 ft RA.- Check that the eng failure is noticed without delay- ln this case go around must be initiated.
NOTE : Sometimes failure is noticed too late (below 100 ft) and thereforeautoland is performed.
Insert Ay'P failure at 80 ft RA, Manual landing is allowed if visual references aresufficient.

- Ensure that the trainee does not waste time in setting-up prior to start- Enter STBY HORIZON flag (no warning on ECAM or FMA, CAT 2 not
allowed). Restore.- Stress the necessity to tune and identify the appropriate NAV AIDS,
especially the ILS of the R\AA/ in use (YAW-BAR for T/O guidance).- An appropriate take-off alternate should be inserted in the SEC F/PLAN.
- Brief the crew that visibility will be reduced to zero on the take-off run toillustrate the effectiveness of the YAW-BAR.(NOTE : YAW-BAR will appear only if the ILS is available for the same R\Aff
direction)- Ask the PF to continue T/O for training pruposes, using the YAW-BAR only.- Freeze SIM just prior to V1, increase visibility to show aircraft on centerline,
then continue the take-off.
- Ensure that the crew can give a concise CAT 3 approach briefing..- Stress task sharing, weather minima, crew qualification, alternate planning,
fuel requirements, aircraft and airfield servicibility, SOP, flight deckl ight ing, etc. . .
- Check crew seating position- LO or MED autobrake is recommended- Check autoland limitations and OEB's.
- Reduce visibility to zero and insert eng failure at 100 KT (before V1).- Ensure that PF is using YAW-BAR guidance during rejected take-off.
- With an ILS CAT 2, CAT 2 minimums only are available. In France, some airports are allowed to use CAT 3 minimums withDH 50 FT.
