The 2017 Annual Conference will be held on WaikikiBeach,Honolulu,HI,October 20-24, 2017. RonRainey,VP LogisIcs, and I had the chance to tour the hotel,Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel, in January. The hotel is awonderful facility and just one block from the Waikikipublic beach and adjacent to the main shopping andrestaurantdistrictsinHonolulu.AddiIonally,theZooandAquarium are just a short walking distance from thehotel.Iamsureyouwillfinditanexcellentvenueforanytype of entertainment you seek. The North Shore ofOahu and the Polynesian Cultural Center are just 35-45minutesawaybycar.
The 2017 program will feature an organized tourhighlighIng food products specific to Hawaii, such ascoffee, fruits, nuts, and food/agritourism, on SundayaZernoon.TherewillalsobeanindustrytouronTuesdayaZernoon looking at major processing and exportindustries in Hawaii. The program will be structuredaround topicsof current interest to themembership,aswell as those specific to Hawaii. Hawaii has some verydisIncIveproductsanddistribuIonissues,sopleasejoinusforthisuniqueopportunity!

I have brought student teams for several yearsandIcana_estthatit isagreatexperienceforstudentsand coaches. Lurleen is currently conducIng a surveywithpastcoachestogatherinputonhowtoenhancetheprograminthefuture.
Theproceedingsissueofourjournal,theJournalofFoodDistribu1on Research, was published online earlier thismonth.Thiswas thefirst issueof the journalunder thedirecIonofournewtechnicaleditor,AmyBekkermanofPrecisionEdits.IwouldliketothankMarcoPalmaforhis
serviceastheproceedingsissueeditorforthelastseveralyears.Also,thankstoallofyouwhocontributedapaperor abstract of your research or program. One of thebenefits of FDRS membership, at least for me, is theopportunity to learn about important current andemergingresearchpresentedattheannualconference.
Oneofour foundingmembers,Mr.DouglasRichardson,passed away this last November. A tribute to Doug’smany contribuIons to the Society is provided in thenewsle_er. We will also hold a tribute to him at theannual meeIng during the Richardson-Applebaumawardsluncheon.

It is with great sadness thatwe pass along the news of Douglas Richardson’spassing.DougwasoneofthefoundingmembersofFDRS,servingaspresidentin1985andVPofMembershipfrom1980to1983.DoughadbeenservingintheroleofVPApplebaumsince1985,managingFDRSinvestmentsformorethan30years.DuringDoug’swatchfuleye,hegrewtheorganizaIon’sinvestmentsfrom$9,000 to its current value of over $300,000. Doug’s investment decisions forFDRS far surpassed the S&P500andDJIA returns; heproudly reporteda17%annualreturnfor2016duringourNewOrleansmeeIng.
Dougwasakindandgenerousman,andalwayshadImetosharehiswealthofknowledge.DoughasbeenahugeassettoFDRS,afriend,andacolleague.Hewill bemissed, but certainly not forgo_en. Remembering Douglas Richardson 1933 - 2016
Douglas Josiah Richardson, Jr. Douglas Josiah Richardson, Jr. (Doug), 83, ofBluoon,SC,wenttobewiththeLordpeacefullyathomeandsurroundedbyloved ones on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Doug was born in Fall River,Massachuse_s on January 6, 1933, to Douglas Josiah Richardson, Sr. andMary(Wheelock)Richardson.HewastheyoungerbrotherofHelenCardandMary Heflin. Doug was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrna (Evans)Richardson,andhisson,DouglasJosiahRichardson, III.Heissurvivedbyhiswife,AnnMarie(Owens)Richardson,aswellasthreedaughters;BethValorz(husband Steven) of Earlysville, VA; StephanieMcCole (husbandWayne) ofRichmond, VA; and Mary Stri_ma_er (husband Michael) of Potomac, MD.Nine grandchildren will also miss Pop-pops; Aubrey and Nathanial Valorz;Mary Beth, Steven and Megan Verba; Carter and Katherine McCole; andVincent and Chad Stri_ma_er; and one great grandchild, Abraham Estes.Doug graduated fromMosesBrownPreparatory School, Providence, RI andalso from the University of Rhode Island. He later received his MBA fromSuffolk University in Boston, MA. Doug worked in the grocery and fooddistribuIonindustry.OverthecourseofhiscareerhewasinmanagementforNewEnglandGrocersSupplyCompany,ownedasupermarketinBillerica,MA,wasanexecuIvewithAmericanHomeFoodProductsandaVPofEducaIonand Research for CooperaIve Food Distributors of America. Doug was afoundingmember and president of the Food DistribuIon Research Society(FDRS)andascholarshipexists inhisnamethroughthatorganizaIon.DougalsoreceivedthePanykoAwardin1997bytheFDRSonlythe2ndsuchawardgiven in30years.Dougwasanavidgolferandwasawarded forhis serviceand devoIon as the President of Sun City'sMen'sGolf Club in 1997.Douggrew up by the ocean and so in his younger days, he loved boaIng andswimming. Many of his fondest memories were created with his family inWestport, MA where he vacaIoned his whole life. His church and churchfamilyatMayeRiverBapIstChurchwereabigpartofhislifeinBluoon.Hewassoproudtohavebeenadeaconathischurch,ofwhichhewaschairmanfor 2 terms. Amystery company issues a challenge on the firstdayofthecompeIIon,aZerwhichstudentteamscompetetogiveabidpresentaIontothecompany’sexecuIveteaminthefinalround.DetailsaboutthecompanyarewithheldfromallteamsunIlthemorningofthecontest, however registered teams will receive some guidance onpreparaIontwoweeksprior.
