Visual Journal

The sketchbook is the tool to facilitate understanding and memory.

Designers (both professionals and students) have always carried

sketchbooks on their travels to analyze and document designs and places

whichmakeanimpressiononthemand,inturn,influencetheirdesign

objects from the study tours, showrooms, museums etc. Entries are to be

entered in the Visual Journal and evaluated as part of the course.

Study Tour Assignment

The study tours of the Architecture and Design Program at DIS form

an integral part of the learning process. We visit sites to experience

and analyze design, and to ultimately become better architects and

designers. Assignment 1 is an integral part of this endeavor. The

assignmentiscarriedoutingroupsof4-5students.Theassignment

consistsofanin-depthresearchandanalysisofaselectpieceoffurniture

and a digital presentation of the analysis to fellow students in the

respective study tour group prior to travelling.

The framework for the research and analysis is a model developed by

Danish architect, Erik Nygaard, in his book, Architecture Understood. The

model and the specifics of the assignment are presented seperately.
