    03 NEWS & EVENTS

ST. JOHN’S NEWS DIGNITY OF LIFE Physician assisted suicide (PAS) is a hot topic across the USA, and there will be a bill proposed in the Minnesota legislature this 2020 to legalize it. We know that we are called to defend the dignity of life from conception to natural death. But we may not know that our faith is a treasure of the art of dying well. We ask you to resist the fear tactics and embrace the call to genuine compassion and friendship. Catholic Church statements and video witnesses are available at www.usccb.org/toliveeachday . PAS myth: People don’t want to be burdens. We should let them go before that point. Truth: Human beings are not burdens. They can only be

considered as burdens if we define the human being by his or her abilities, or lack thereof. Circumstances may be burdensome, but people are not. Often, when people say they don’t want to be a burden, they are scared, depressed, and want to hear back “You are not a burden.” Offering them PAS just affirms a lie spoken in a challenged mental state. Catholic compassion: Human beings are never burdens, yet we are called to “bear one another’s burdens.” (Galatians 6:2) We will all face dying someday, and as part of the human family, we should help one another face and live through this process. Dying can come with heavy realities, and perhaps we can call those challenges burdens. But when we bear them together,

love wins. The person is bigger than the disease, and never a burden. Let’s remind each other of that in word and deed, and teach our children how to love.

PASTA WITH THE PADRES! The 13th Annual “Pasta with the Padres” fundraiser for ECHO Food Shelf, sponsored by the four Mankato area Catholic churches, will be held at St. John’s on Sunday, March 8th from 4-7 p.m. We will need a lot of helpers again this year. Sign up sheets for volunteers will be in the narthex. Please sign up to help and then plan to attend this event. It’s lots of fun!

SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY Equipping the Family: Having Critical Conversations The constant flood of influence that comes through the internet and social media in all of its various forms, along with social pressures from peers make it difficult for children to live virtuous and holy lives. In the digital age, it’s not a matter of if your child will see something inappropriate online. It’s only a matter of when. And regrettably, internet pornography is teaching our children how and what to think about sex and marriage. Next

weekend, February 23/23, St. John the Baptist will be celebrating our second annual Safe Haven Sunday. This weekend of awareness will provide free resources to you to give you confidence for how to talk to your children about internet dangers, as well as their personal online and offline choices. Please join us with your prayers and presence as we prepare for this unique event.
