Congratulations to both the boys and girls, Soaring Eagles Basketball teams on their Championship!

They made history by being the first teams of Hannahville In-dian School to take both of the trophies for the Northern Lights League Tournament that was held on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th. Both championship games were extremely close all the way to the end. Each win was emotional for everyone who attended. Northern Lights League Tournament

page 2 Hannahville Happenings . March 2012 .

In honor of the championship wins over the weekend, Hannahville Indian School held a pep rally on Monday, February 27th. Each team member took turns cutting one string of the net until they were able to take the net down. Both nets will be displayed with the trophies for viewing.

During the Northern Lights League Tournament, Chris Herren, a basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts, visited Han-nahville Indian School. He shared his life story about playing for the Celtics in the NBA, only to lose it all to addiction. Drug-free since June 4, 2008, and alcohol-free since August 1, 2008, Chris has refocused his life to put sobriety and family above all else.

Off the court Chris continues to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in their life. With the release of his memoir, Basketball Junkie, in May of 2011, Chris was approached by hundreds of people and their families looking for assistance in their road to recovery. In-spired by their stories, Chris formed The Herren Project to edu-cate at-risk populations on addiction and help others in taking the first steps toward recovery and a life of sobriety. Founded in 2011, The Herren Project is a non-profit foundation established by Chris Herren, that assists individuals and families struggling with ad-diction.

Thank you to all the sponsors that helped bring him here: Han-nahville Indian Community, Hannahville Health and Human Ser-vices, Family Violence Prevention and Service, Carney Nedeau Public Schools and Project Visions.

It is never too late to follow your dreams. It takes drive and follow thru to make your dreams become a reality. For more information visit www.theherrenproject.org

Super Reading ChallengeHannahville Indian School Library held a Super Reading Challenge. In con-junction with the Super Bowl, Mrs. Fu-dala secured 12 prints/sketches for the Grand Prizes for the reading activity. The sketches are of the Green Bay Pack-er players, both present and past. They are beautifully done and were framed by Mrs. Fudala. For four weeks students and staff were encouraged to read as many books as possible, as each book read and tested on earned them a chance in the final drawings held on February 6th. It wasn’t neccessary for the participants to be Packer fans to earn a prize. Many of the readers were not Packer fans, but do have relatives and friends that are and would enjoy them as a gift. The winners of the Super Bowl Reading Challenge are as follows:• Packer Teddy Bear- Ambrosia Tau-

Bully-Free School

To: Parents/Guardians

From: School Administration

Re: Bullying

Due to overwhelming behavior issues within the school involving bullying activity we, as school ad-ministration, have met in an attempt to resolve these challenges. Specifically, we have been experienc-ing an increase in bullying within our 4th through 8th Grade students and it is in the best interest of the students that we initiate an appropriate response to the ongoing issues of bullying.

Our school policy allows for zero tolerance involving any and all behaviors of bullying. To date, we have initiated suspensions of students for the more serious incidents however, in order to keep our school safe and bully free, we will provide consequences for those involved in bullying as set forth in school policy. Behavior deemed relevant to bullying will be enforced with a zero tolerance approach and will result in a minimum of three days out of school suspension.

In order to keep our school safe and bully free, we in cooperation with the School Resource Officer, and School Staff will be directing our attention to meeting with each class K-12 and addressing the is-sue of bullying as appropriate (age appropriate measures will be taken for grades K-3). Students will gain further understanding of what bullying is, how it affects others, our schools expectations, and consequences of such behavior. In addition to our efforts in creating a Bully-Free school, we will also reinforce the School Wide Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) as we feel all programs help to promote a safer school.

Please call the school at 466-2952 if you have any questions.

Bear Clan Feast

Hannahville Happenings . March 2012 . Page 13

Ge tthe Mi Gwetth Sue Gustafson mi-ne Vicki Dowd for all of your efforts to coordinate the recent Bear Clan Feast. Ge tthe Mi Gwetth also to Gary Meshigaud, Don Jenerou, Tom & Kim Roman and a special thanks to Aiesha Meshigaud for the Water Ceremony and for singing that most beautiful water song along with all the women present. That started a healing for all waters that make up the world and the water within each individual all across turtle island. Many, many people never knew that their effort could touch the hearts and souls of everyone, everywhere whether they knew it or not and they don’t even have to accept this way of life. Prayers know no boundaries, it is for the greater good of all life and all people.

Ge tthe Mi Gwetth to Big Bear-Wally Meshigaud for continuing to do what you have always done in re-lighting that Sacred Fire for this Sacred Ritual. By what you do, you help bring people out of the darkness and into the light of the fire, the fire that represents the light of God & the heart of our Grand-mother the Earth.

Ge Tthe Mi Gwetth to those of you who brought forth your give away gift items in memory of your loved ones or to honor your clan, you have made the spirit of the bear happy and doing so he will help you in return. All you have to do is ask. Some of you wore your clan colors of black and red and still others came wearing bear claw necklaces or beaded medallions with designs of the clan on them, you have done well and your actions make me and the community something that we can be proud of be-cause you by your actions show that you have honored your clan.

The little ones are born during this month hence the name mkos gises-little bear moon. When they are born Ma Ma Bear does not wake up and take care of them they have to fend for themselves. Some of them struggle and have a hard time and some of them do not make it so it is up to us to gather the food that the bear eats and eat it for them and in this way they are fed spiritually. In that whole process we become the temporary caretakers and the only way we can do that is through spiritual means, it is our responsibility to do what we can for them so again I want to thank all those that came and for those that didn’t bother we did it for you. That’s what we do, we do what we can to try to help.

Cancer Screening Saves LivesAccording to the Indian Health Services, Cancer is the second leading cause of death among tribal populations. If you are reading this article, it’s likely that you know someone who has been affected by cancer. While there are several things we can do to help reduce our odds of getting cancer, it is very important to follow your tribal clinics screening guidelines in order to find cancer early when it’s easier to treat. The American Cancer Society and the Walmart Foundation share this information with you so that you can reduce your risk for Breast and Colon cancers.

Things to reduce your risk for cancer include:• Quit Smoking• Eating lots of fruits and vegetables• Exercise regularly• Maintaining a Healthy Weight • Follow recommended screening guidelines

For Breast Cancer, The American Cancer Society recommends:• Yearly Mammograms for Women beginning at age 40• Clinical breast exam (CBE) about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over• Self Breast Exams starting at age 20• Talk with your doctor about your family and personal health history and whether you should have additional tests at an earlier age.

For Colon Cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends:• Colonoscopy every 10 years begging at age 50• Yearly Fecal Occult Blood Tests ( FOBT) • The American Cancer Society recommends that some people be screened using a different schedule because of their personal history or family history. Talk with your doctor about your history and what colorectal cancer screening schedule is best for you

“I’ve won already as far as I am concerned” – Warren WandahsegaWarren and his wife, Vicki, have partnered up to compete in the Hannahville Health Center’s program “REACH for Health, Weight Loss Challenge”. Since theystarted about 5 weeks ago both of them have lost appro-ximately 9 pounds. But the health benefits have out we-ighed actual weight by tons. With the new and improved diet and exercise changes, Warren has seen many chan-ges to his health and medication regimen. He was taking100 units of Lantus (24 hour insulin) daily and is down totaking only 25 units. He was using fast acting insulin at meal time to cover his high blood sugar he is now not using any of this kind. His oral (pill) diabetic medicationshave been cut in half. Prior to beginning this program hisfasting blood sugars were over 200 and now he is averag-ing about 115. Also, he has seen a decrease in his blood pressure medications and currently is taking half of whathe was. Both Warren and Vicki state that they have moreenergy, Vicki stated, “more energy at work, I get the bingo packets at a fast pace now, not just walk”. The currently are coming into the Fitness Center three times a week, but have also made changes in the food choice they make. “I no longer have fried potatoes and eggs for breakfast every day, now I have cereal and milk. I am drinking milk everyday”. Vicki says she does the cooking and she has added salads, more vegetables and fruits into what they eat. “The eating habit is the most to work on, after you get that done, it becomes easier”. They have also switched to whole wheat bread and only have about 2 slices per week, and incorporated peanuts as snacks.

“I have seen amazing changes happening with people enrolled in the Community Weight Chal-lenge. Diabetics have been able to cut back on medications and insulin. Those with back pain are noticing less pain due to weight loss and exercise. Depression is lifting in people because of healthier eating habits, exercise leading to release of natural en-dorphins and weight loss, and

The Hannahville Health Clinic and the Elder’s Program have come together to try and offer the com-munity Elder’s more programs. In this effort, we are currently offering assessments to anyone who may be interested – there is a sign-up sheet in the Elder Outreach Director’s office in Complex #1 or you can call Amanda at 906-723-2546.

Now, when we use the word assessment, we simply mean that we will meet with you and go over some questions with you to see if there are any needs of yours that we can meet. This is not an assess-ment where we will be meeting with you to take you out of your home, nor will we be telling you what to do. What this process is meant to do, is try and figure out if you need help with something and if we can help you with that need – you always have the right not to answer any questions that you feel uncomfortable with.

This is a process that is new to the community, but we would like to encourage every Elder to take part so that we can do our best to help you. If you do not feel that an assessment is something that is neces-sary for you at this time, we would still encourage you to participate, so that if there ever came a time when you could use some type of assistance, you will already be in our system. In going through this process, you can also help us to identify any needs that we may not have a program for and find what types of programs we could think of providing in the future.

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with the Elder Outreach Director or you can call Amanda Gunville at 723-2546.

Tribal Gaming Commission The Tribal Gaming Commission would like to wish everyone good luck in the upcoming elections. According to the Hannahville Indian Community Tribal Gaming Ordinance, Section 4.11(C)(4), “Any tribal member who seeks office on the Tribal Gaming Commission must have a completed background check and must be approved to sit on the Commission before he or she may be placed upon the general election ballot for the Commission.” In order for the Commission to ensure your background is complete, please have all backgrounds turned by April 5th, 2012. These applications can be picked up at the Human Resources Department at the Casino or online and turned in at the same location. Just tell them you would like an application for the Gaming Commission’s upcoming elections. Make sure that you are filling out the Gaming Commission application and not the employ-ment background check. Also, when your return the background, make sure you tell Human Resources the back-ground is for the Commission elections and not employment. It will take several weeks for these backgrounds to be completed.

Please read the qualifications carefully. If you have questions you may contact our staff, Brad Madalinski 723-2046, Barb Kleikamp 723-2047 or Jennifer Keshick 723-2048. The sooner you get your backgrounds completed, the sooner we will be able to begin the investigation. Again, we wish everyone good luck.

Personal AdsHappy Birthday Gina Boy Chief. When you look in a mirror, see

what I see... my girl. When I look at you, I will always see the beautiful baby I first held, carried. The same baby that grew up to become a wonderful young and beautiful mother right before

my eyes. Although you’re grown, I will always remember the growing years and all the special memories you imprinted on

my heart. This mirror reflects what I see... A woman filled with love, hope, energy and promise. It’s the celebration of our jour-ney together through good and bad. We carried it all. We picked

up and stood tall and strong. When you fell, I was there to wipe away all the hurt tears. I tried to heal all your bumps and

bruises. I was the tooth fairy when that first tooth fell out, your little banker. Of all our hardest times, we were there for

one another. My special and wonderful daughter, we conqured it all! So we open another chapter in both our lives. This mirror will reflect on how much I love you and how extremely happy and proud I am of you. Lets celebrate another year together! xoxo
