Joe, an ASIJ fifth grader,
wakes up, to get ready to go
to school. He goes to the
kitchen and eats breakfast.
Once he finishes breakfast
he takes a shower and
changes in to his clothes for
school. He brushes his teeth
and leaves to catch the bus.
Do you know a schedule
like this?
It might be yours. Even if you say “school” there are many kinds. Some schools have a long time for school day. The longest school time is 8 hours. Some schools are just a few hours. 4 hours is the shortest school time.
People usually are ready to
learn at school, but when they
get there they do not want to
learn in various reasons. Noah a
fifth grader says “I’m exited to
learn in the morning, but when I
get to school I don’t want to
learn because I wonder about a
game I am in to” About this, Joe
says “Those people don’t have
enough time to learn because
they just fuss around about how
it’s boring and they just wait until
the time passes. If they work
hard they will start to like
learning.”

Schools have been shortening
times from the past. Some
schools have gone from the 5-
day Monday to Friday schedule
changed to a 4-day school week.
Joe says, “I don’t think they have
much time. Even 5 days at school
is short, but 4 days is shorter. If
you want a good job you have to
learn a lot, but 4days is too short
to learn enough. Who knows
what will happen on one of the
days on the school week? If
there was a storm on one of the
days, you will only have three
days to learn, and thats not
enough to learn more. ”
A french poet Victor Hugo
says
“He who opens a door, closes
a prison.” This meant that if
you study hard you will get a
good job which will get you far
from prison. Victor Hugo
wanted everyone to like
studying so they can have a
good life and job.

Is it okay for the kids?
Out of 24 5th graders that
were asked,33% said they think
we need more time at school,
13% thought we have the
perfect amount of time and
54% thought we have too
much.
Joe says, “Even just a little bit
more time and effort in school
will help us learn more things that
help’s us in our adulthood and
career.”
