N o, your eyes are not deceiving you - that really is sunshine out there. And with spring's longer, brighter days comes a sudden desire to shed

those black tights, sling on some Lycra, and get a little sweat going on.

But if your exercise routine is feeling a little rusty, and your

gym kit's looking a bit, well, dusty, here are some easy ways

to spring clean your fitness, plus some new pieces to help

you feel workout-ready and HOT (because new kit is always a

great motivator, right?).

1 . S T A R T T H E D A Y W I T H B E D Y O G A

Yes, you read that right, bed yoga is a thing. "It's the best

way to wake up," says yoga teacher Annie Rice. "Before you

can muster the strength to get out of bed, try a few simple

stretches to warm up your body and set you up for the day.

Try bringing one knee at a time in towards your chest and

holding for five breaths. Then roll over into child's pose to

stretch your spine, and finally take yourself to the top of the

bed and lean your legs against the wall, flexing your feet and

holding for ten breaths."

Better weather = fewer excuses to blame the rain for an

extended stay on sofa (damn it). "Now that the mornings are

less chilly and the evenings are brighter, why not give walking

to work a try?" says personal trainer Dan Price from

SIX3NINE. "Whether it's part, or all, of your commute,

walking/cycling to or from work can make a big difference to

your daily energy expenditure. A 30-minute walk will burn

between 150 to 200 calories, while a 30 min cycle will burn up

to 350 calories."

3 . T A K E T H I N G S O U T S I D E

Want to shake up your gym sesh and amp up your strength

and stamina? Time to hit the great outdoors.

"A good way of combining a full-body workout with cardio and

resistance training is to do a running fartlek (Swedish for

speed play) with bodyweight exercises thrown in," says Robb

Birchley, a personal trainer at Frame. Robb suggests this

routine:

To warm up, jog for ten mins, gradually increasing your

speed, and including four short, fast bursts in the last 2

minutes.

Then, sprint from one lamppost to the next; jog from that

lamppost to the next; perform bodyweight exercise; jog from

that lamppost to the next; and repeat ten times.

Bodyweight exercises include: Press-ups; plank; shoulder

press (a press-up from a Downward Dog stance); side plank

(L); side plank (R). Do in order - then repeat.

4 . I M P R O V I S E W I T H Y O U R S U R R O U N D I N G S

To add variety to your outdoor workout, utilise what's right

there around you (though obviously don't play fast and loose

with health and safety, guys - be sensible!). "Stairs, steps and

benches provide a great opportunity to make exercises

harder and increase the difficulty and intensity of workouts,"

says Paul Lyons from Speedflex Leeds. "These also serve as

great fitness tools that can be used without the need to

transport equipment.

5 . F I N D S O M E T H I N G Y O U E N J O Y

Oh, yes, we've heard this one before - but it's always worth

saying. "Everywhere you look there's the new 'best way to

train' to either lose weight, build muscle or get stronger. The

truth is, there is no optimal method," adds Dan from

SIX3NINE. "With my clients, the best results are always

achieved through the style of training they enjoy the most.

This is because enjoying your training will keep you coming

back, keep you pushing harder, and ultimately keep you

progressing. So whether it's lifting heavy weights, circuit

training or rock climbing, find something you enjoy and your
