SAFETY SLOGAN CONTEST

Left to right: David Larson, Michelle Keenan, Donette Simonson & John Krizan

We recently held a contest at the Alliant Energy AQCS project in Pardeeville, Wisconsin. We asked all Jamar employees to submit their ideas for a slogan to be used on a jobsite banner. The intent of this contest was to engage our workers in safety awareness and to produce something that would be a visual reminder to everybody onsite that we are all responsible for working safely. Our laborers put their heads together and collaboratively submitted the eventual winning slogan. For winning the contest each was presented with a gift card.

Executive Message

We are in the home stretch of our Centennial celebration with just a few events remaining. Our recent reunion picnic was a great success and provided all who attended a chance to hear some new takes on the great stories that helped forge the culture of our company. I hope you have had an opportunity to connect with our past and get reenergized for the future through participation in the events this year. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to get involved in some of the remaining events, which are the in-progress United Way Campaign, the Christmas City of the North Float & Parade in November, the end-of-year celebration December 14, and the 100 Thanks Tribute, in play until the end of 2013. I’ve had an opportunity to hear some of the 100 Thanks Tribute responses. The words of appreciation and “thank you’s” received from the employees chosen (and their families), as well as the charity receiving the funds, is touching. Through each of you, we are having a positive impact in our community during our Centennial year. This is great to see. Expect to hear more detail on the Tribute near the end of the year. Thank you for all you do!

Safety Policy RemindersMessage from Greg Olek, Craig Fellman, and Mike McParlan

The choices we make have consequences, sometimes good and sometimes bad. As an organization, we are compelled by our own good conscience to communicate our expectations and enforce the most stringent safety rules. The choices we make can be the difference between somebody going home injury free or not, and in the worst of cases the difference between life and death. At Jamar, following safe work practices is not optional, it’s a condition of employment. Why do we enforce our rules and why in some cases are the penalties for an infraction so high? In trying to answer this question the most obvious comes to mind: the consequences are high because the risks are high. We enforce our rules because we care. We’ve identified 3 safety rules that we consider to be lifesaving or “Cardinal” Rules. An employee who violates one of these rules is taking a risk that could potentially result in serious injury or death to themselves or somebody else. We consider these type of risks to be intolerable and they’ll be enforced as such. These “Cardinal Rules” are:

Lockout / TagoutConfined Space EntryFall Protection

While our progressive disciplinary action policy will otherwise remain unchanged, violating one of Jamar’s “Cardinal Rules” will result in immediate discipline, up to and including termination. Why? Because we are not willing to allow an employee to put themselves or co-workers at risk for serious injury. You can expect to see the addition of our “Cardinal Rules” into the newest revision of our employee safety handbook which we expect to be completed in the near future. We want everyone to go home safe each day – zero injuries. Together we can create a safe working environment. Thank you in advance for your support.

If you have any questions on our policies please contact Greg Olek.

Departments Industrial Commercial HVAC Service

Location Portage, WI

Dates Industrial: January 2013 – April 2014 Commercial HVAC: March 2013 – November 2013 Service: Ongoing

DescriptionThis project is a large industrial piping contract, bringing our HVAC division and fabrication divisions into play. There was extensive pre-fabrication of piping systems involved and we also used a new integrated project scheduling and controls system. Working collaboratively with APi Construction onsite to share equipment, scaffolding, etc., has been a success as well.

For this project, a high quality commercial HVAC system incorporated into a specialized industrial application was utilized. We also incorporated iPads into the field to assist with conflict resolution, quantity tracking, material acquisitions, and document controls.

As an Automation/Controls group, we customized a panel fabrication shop in our back warehouse to help improve the quality and productivity of the control panel fabrication process. This experience has given our Automation/Controls team an opportunity to continue our knowledge growth, as well as giving us a stronger lead in the controls industry.

2013 Jamar Boy Scout Golf Classic

This year's scholarship recipient, Matthew Thom, as he accepts his check.

On August 5, 2013 the 19th annual Jamar Boy Scout Golf Classic was held. Thinking back on the the many years Jamar has been involved raised questions about how the event became what it is today.

Jamar's long history with the Boy Scouts started back in 1933 when Walker Jamar Jr joined Troop 43 out of Congdon Park. He was an active member who became an Eagle Scout in September of 1937 at age 16. At one point there was a long-term Boy Scout Camp, Camp Jamar, located East of Hinckley, MN.

Walker's involvement in scouting eventually lead The Jamar Company to partner with the Boy Scouts in their fundraising efforts.

The idea to start a golfing fundraiser was brought to the committee by Roger Braff in 1985. His brother Bob had held a similar event in Georgia and recommended that Roger use the same concept for the Boy Scouts. The idea has worked out well as the Jamar Boy Scout Golf Classic has been going strong ever since.

In 1997, twelve years after the original fundraiser started, the first Jamar Eagle Scout scholarship was presented as part of the event. This year's recipient was Matthew Thom from Troop 212 out of Poplar, WI (see photo above).

Information about the event

The golf classic is an 18 Hole Scramble with a shotgun start. This year was another action-packed day that included:

This year Jamar raised an impressive $29,652 for the Boy Scouts! This is quite a difference from our first year's total of approximately $4,000 in 1985. We hope to raise even more next year.

The Jamar Ball Drop

A long time Jamar employee, Rollie Sward, had seen an interesting game played at other fundraisers called the "Ball Drop." This involved either a crane or helicopter dropping golf balls from the air in hopes of one numbered ball going into a hole.

Rollie thought this would be a fun game to incorporate into the Boy Scout event. To make it special he had the Jamar shop fabricate a device for the concept (see it in action below).

Rollie releasing the Ball Drop lever, making the golf balls spread across the putting green.

Summer Internships Come to a Close

Summer 2013 Interns (left to right): Micah Erickson, Andrew Nelson, Jared VanValkenburg, Pete Suska and Cody Ekstrom

Our intern program saw yet another successful season. At the end of their time with us each intern gave a report of their Jamar experience - here are some highlights:

For most this was their first official hands on work experience. They learned how important communication is in the office and field. It wasn't something

they thought about until after being put in their internship role. They noticed how much their communication skills improved during their short time here.

It was the first time most had been exposed to construction estimating and the proposal process. This was helpful in gaining real life experience.

Safety is something they had not focused on previously. When they left Jamar they had learned another important aspect of the industry..

They all said they loved working with the people of Jamar and the culture we have within the company

Most hoped this wouldn’t be the last time they worked for Jamar. Cody and Micah have continued on and remain with us. A couple current examples of employees we've hired as a result of their internships include Jake Tornquist and Pat DeGrood. “Craig and Mike came to the UMD career fair and sold me on the fact that Jamar did design build construction. Which means you can do the engineering/drafting, estimating, and project manage all at once. Basically, it sounded fun to be able to engineer and draft the project and then be able to go onsite and see how it’s actually being installed. While an intern at Jamar I was shown all the different divisions and exposed to how large API group was and the opportunities once you join full time. This led me to make the decision to join the Jamar Team,” said Tornquist. “Jamar Company was a turning point for me. I was getting a degree in Construction Management and Business from South Dakota State University at the time and I had worked for small to mid-level construction contractors. But with Jamar I realized the potential a company and its people could reach, and their desire to continually push further is want keeps me striving for improvement,” said DeGrood. “I began my internship with Jamar in 2009, worked for them through the school year and was offered a position after graduation. What I like most about Jamar is that with the right attitude and work ethic, your possibilities are limitless.”

Radisson Mechanical Systems Replacement

Department Jamar Service

Location Duluth, MN

Dates May 13, 2013 – June 7, 2013

For this project we replaced existing mechanical equipment and controls for the Radisson Hotel. It included all major air handling, domestic water system, heating system and chilled water systems.

Safety was the #1 issue faced on this project because of the short timeline for demo and installation. A solid safety pre-plan and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for all tasks kept the group focused.

Collaboration between Hunt Electric, Viking Construction and Jamar made for a very smooth project.

“Jamar is a one-stop partner with all of the different types of work they can perform."

- David Roth, President of Viking Construction

Key processes included: Jamar pre-plan, JHA on all tasks, daily huddle, and safety audits along with all of the Jamar team’s willingness to make this project a success was key. Every department in The Jamar Company contributed to the success of this project. The determination and willingness of the people of the Jamar Company to safely accomplish the task set before them…WOW!!!

St. Louis County CourthouseLocation Duluth, MN

Dates May 13, 2013 – July 13, 2013

Department Roofing

This summer our Roofing department gave the St. Louis County Courthouse a facelift. The project included re-roofing large internal gutters with EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) and replaced the roofing system on the sloped area with Met-Tile metal panels.

EPDM in the gutter re-roof is 90 mil EPDM, which is a lot thicker than standard EPDM. This requires extra detail work for warranty compliance. The metal panels are from Met-Tile, which are stamped to look like Spanish tile. We also installed a new ventilation system under the metal panels.

A local architect said, “this panel looks great, it will most likely last longer then I do!”

The gutter work was installed with the best quality EPDM system there is. The metal panels were a new product for Jamar. We have installed similar products but not this type of stamped panel. Wayne Fjeld and Dave Wells worked closely with the manufacturer to implement the best details we could in the roof system to increase value to the customer.

“It looks like it was supposed to, keeping with the historic nature of the building.” - A St. Louis County official said.

The project was very successful with professional quality installation and no injuries or safety violations!

Courage Center's "Shoot For Fun"

Courage Center, now known as the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, hosted the 15th annual Shoot For Fun on September 7, 2013. The shoot was held at the Old Vermillion Trail Hunting Preserve & Sporting Clay. It drew 400+ people that took part in a round of 50 target sporting clays and shooting games like Flurries, 5-stand, Trap, and Wobble Trap.

“The Shoot For Fun event raises funds to facilitate programs at Courage Center Duluth for the entire year,” said Eric Larson, Duluth Program Manager. “Money raised that day funds a wide variety of programs developed by Courage Center for people with disabilities.” The Institute provides rehabilitation services for people with short- and long-term conditions, injuries and disabilities in communities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Jamar has been shooting in the Shoot For Fun since the beginning, and for the past 13 years Brad Hansen has been helping out. “I got involved with Courage in 2000 when they moved up to Old Vermillion Trail from the Superior Gun Club,” Hansen said.

“The first year I was asked to shoot the Shoot For Fun because of my involvement with shooting sports and I shot on the Jamar team. Eric Larson approached me to help out on the planning committee about 2002 and I’ve been on the committee ever since,” stated Hansen.

He continues, “The big thing is the people the program helps. One of the guys I shoot with is in a wheelchair. He was in a motorcycle accident; I actually shoot with him quite a bit. It’s a nice way to help those people out. They benefit from the program for all of the events Courage puts on for them. It’s a really great cause.”
