CMN, the prestigious luxury yacht builder located in Cherbourg, France, has a heritage that dates back to 1912 when Felix Amiot Aircraft construction put

the French region of Normandy on the aeronautical stage. Aircraft design and production gave way to shipbuilding, both commercial and military. It was in the sixties that CMN started to bring its attention to the then emerging yachting market with the construction of a series of sailing boats such as the ‘Maïca’, an 11-metre sailing boat designed by Illingworth and Primrose. In the 1970s and 1980s, among other racing projects for famous yacht skippers, CMN launched ‘Paul Ricard’ for Eric Tabarly and ‘Kriter IV’ for Olivier de Kersauzon. With the luxury yacht market expanding into larger and larger yachts in the nineties, CMN Yacht Division undertook projects over 140’ such as the schooner ‘Friday Star’ and the expedition yacht ‘French Look II’. The new millennium saw CMN Yachts launching larger motor yachts like 49m ‘Bermie II’ and 43m ‘Héloval’, and sailing yachts such as 32m ‘Attimo’ and 32m ‘Lady Barbaretta’. Now part of ABU DHABI MAR, CMN is a major player in the superyacht industry. The company’s CMN Line 60 has been highly successful with three recent launches to its name – ‘Netanya 8’, ‘Slipstream’ and ‘Cloud 9’ and several revolutionary designs available for owners who want a fully customised and individual design with a proven, reliable track record.

‘NETANYA 8’

‘Netanya8’wasthefirstyachtoftheCMNLine60to be launched and is the result of a fruitful cooperation between CMN and Andrew Winch Designs. An exceptionally stylish 190’ displacement vessel that is packed full of innovative and exhilarating features, she has been built with sleeping accommodation for up to 14 guests, while her wide beam allows for some great internal spaces, including a vast open plan lounge. The CMN Line 60’s design is highly adaptable and incorporates many impressive features - a full beam panoramic sky lounge and a private balcony to the VIP suite, both come as standard. The versatility of the design maximises the room choices CMN is able to offer its clients, such as the inclusion of a main deck gymnasium and a bridge deck lounge with an air-conditioned al-frescoglazed dining area. “The best ever view of the sea is a key feature of our design work,” explained interior designer Andrew Winch, who has taken this statement and optimised it in the design of this spectacular yacht series. Onboard, ‘Netanya 8’ can accommodate up to 14 guests in private use, while the design of the series offers a yacht with large volumes of accommodation with a fullbeamowner’scabin, abridgedeckVIPcabinanduptofiveguest cabins. A stunning stair hall and generous open plan saloons on both the main and bridge decks are impressive features of the yacht. The sheer volume of the yacht and the exceptional 2.25m - 2.3m headroom (7’6’’) on the main and bridge deck exceeds that of most yachts of her size. One of the clever design features incorporated into this yacht is that the accommodation has been designed so that the crew are able to serve all the main guest areas of the yacht without disturbing guests, by means of separate staircases linking all the main sections of the yacht. The first yacht of the CMN Line 60, ‘Netanya 8’raised the bar for yachts approaching the 200’ size and has become a real benchmark for the yachts in the series that have already followed her on the water, namely ‘Slipstream’ and ‘Cloud 9’.

‘SLIPSTREAM’

“More than a yacht – a piece of Art,” is how the owner described ‘Slipstream’ on her launch in 2009. “This yacht has exceeded my expectations,” he further declared. And it is not surprising. ‘Slipstream’s design offers a huge level of accommodation and incorporates many impressive features, such as the full beam panoramic sky lounge and the full beam owner’s suite, while the bridge deck VIP suite boasts a private foredeck with sweeping ocean views. ‘Slipstream’ is the second yacht of the CMN Line 60 series to be launched and is a result of the collaboration between CMN Yachts and Andrew Winch Designs. At 197’ in length the sheer volume on ‘Slipstream’, such as her 2.25m – 2.3m headroom on the main deck and bridge decks, exceeds that of most other yachts, while her exterior deck spaces include a huge open plan sun-deck equipped with a large Jacuzzi, gym equipment and sun-pads. Indeed, thefirstimpressiononboarding‘Slipstream’is one of space and volume. A hallmark of the CMN Line60seriesistheflexibilityofcreatinguniquecustominteriors within a tried and tested seaworthy hull design. With ‘Slipstream’, Andrew Winch Designs not only used this flexibility to create the optimum use of the spaceavailable, but by the clever use of colour and textures, painted an illusion of a yacht that is even larger than her impressive stature actually is. ‘Slipstream’s dramatic exterior architecture, accentuated by the yacht’s dark, metallic colour scheme, commands attention whether she is docked, at anchor or underway. Whichever way this remarkable yacht’s exterior isviewed, thefirmyetflowinglinescreateaverysleekandpowerful appearance. A yacht built for cruising, ‘Slipstream’ is powered by twin Caterpillar 3516B engines, each producing 2,230hp at 1600 rpm. These deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots and an ocean crossing range in excess of 6,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots. A truly inspiring yacht, ‘Slipstream’ is one of the mostpopularyachtsafloat.

‘CLOUD 9’

The third in the highly successful CMN Line 60 series, ‘Cloud 9’ is a paradise of escapism. Her nautically inspired and contemporary interior was designed to encompass the client’s request for both quality yet gentle surroundings. The vision was to create a platform to complement the ever changing seascapes whilst cruising in an environment that not only wholly caters to each client’s personal requirements, but also a place that a charter guest can feel is their own. ‘Cloud 9’ is fully MCA compliant, and able to accommodate a total of twelve guests, split between the owner’s cabin, VIP cabin and four guest cabins. Her versatility and functional design make her an excellent charter yacht with a relaxed family feel. The latest yacht to be delivered from the CMN Line 60, ‘Cloud 9’ shares the same engineering as her sister ship ‘Slipstream’, yet she is entirely different in spirit. The warm cherry and plane woods were chosen to match the indigenous woods in the client’s Sydney home and combined with nautical blue and brown tones, Andrew Winch Designs created a warm yacht club atmosphere. One of the most striking features on this yacht, the upper deck hosts a huge panoramic sky lounge which doubles as a hi-tech cinema with a 3m pop-up screen carefully concealed in the custom designed chaise-longue, while a drop down projector is disguised in the ceiling above the sofa. A combination of limed oak joinery, with pale cream satin lacquer and satin finished limed oakdetails provide a warm and inviting atmosphere to this lounge. This huge space also opens into a conservatory dining room, with sliding doors on to the aft terrace. Outside as well, ‘Cloud 9’ is truly inspiring. The enormous sun deck provides a great stage for sunbathing, swimming in the Jacuzzi, as well as the space for informal dining for all guests in either the shade or relaxed at the bar. ‘Cloud 9’ is another very individual yacht built to extremely high standards by CMN.

CMN – EIDSGAARD DESIGN 65m ‘PANACHE’

Following on from the success of its highly acclaimed 60m platform, and the successful launchings of ‘Netanya 8’, ‘Slipstream’ and ‘Cloud 9’, CMN’s sales and marketing manager Cyril Le Sourd approached Eidsgaard Designwithabrief to realiseanew65mflagshipyacht.This stunning new project , with the build name ‘Panache’, is designed to be the biggest yacht in CMN’s portfolio, and will take all the technical and engineering lessons learned from the 60m, develop and enhance them to ensure CMN’s continuedascentamongsttheranksoffirstclassEuropeanshipbuilders. Technical improvements to the 60m platform have stemmed from a number of sources, but none perhaps as informed and useful as those provided by the crew and Captains of the yachts already launched. This point is made by Le Sourd who says, “who better to deliver an informed response to the overall workings, functionality and layout of a yacht than the crew who are onboard in all working conditions, be it service or on deck week in week out 24/7”. Cyril has worked tirelessly to build on these relationships and ensure that his team of builders and technicians do everything to modify and adapt existing engineering ensuring each yacht delivered is better than the last. Having worked extensively with both creative directors Peder Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison prior to the formation of their company, CMN was in no doubt as to the choice of Eidsgaard Design for the Interior and Exterior of Panache. Following a ‘meeting of minds’ the outline of the brief was laid out. CMN wished to create a fully engineered, build able, elegant yacht, which was to be cutting edge in every technical respect, and yet without shouting “radical” or “revolutionary”. Eidsgaard Design immediately looked to the golden era of the liner, and the enormous contribution made to it by French ship builders. As Peder Eidsgaard explains: “We really wanted to capture the romance and purity of line so well demonstrated in yachts built around the 1930’s, and yet maintain the crisp, contemporary exterior forms that have become the trademark of EDL exteriors”. Peder was also keen to point out that the use of alternative paint coloursforthehullandsuperstructurehelpstodefinethe

exterior, and give focus and dynamics to those elements he wished to highlight, another EDL trademark. Upon closer inspection an increasing number of Eidsgaard Design’s beautifully refined details becomeapparent, giving the yacht an originality that will set it apart from its more conventional rivals. One such detail that demonstrates EDL’s originality is the way in which the bulwark “wings” wrap under the extending deck plates creating a unique architectural feature, which is then carried through to the interior. It is evident throughout the yacht that the distinctions between interior and exterior spaces have been intentionally blurred. On the main deck the option is being offered to owners to have fold down balconies port and starboard that sit facing full height sliding glass doors to the interior. Ben Harrison comments that this is intended to increase the guests’ connection with the exterior, and give the viewer an uninterrupted view to the horizon, especially when seated in the starboard lounge area. The owner’s cabin offers the same option with fold down balconies perfect for that private breakfast, or sharing a sunset cocktail while at anchor. Sitting above this on the upper deck, Eidsgaard Design has crafted an exceptional series of spaces including a cinema lounge with an outboard facing bar, an interior/exterior dining area for 12 guests and an exquisite aft facing panoramic seating area. It was vitally important to the designers to ensure that no heavy rails or frames were used in making up the glass screens that enclose the dining area. It was therefore decided to enclose the space but not to make it weather tight, saving on weight and avoiding a threshold or track in the deck. This allows conditioned air to be pumped into the space bringing down the temperature, and acts like an air curtain to the upper salon so that the doors here can remain open while the dining area is enclosed. When dining, these frameless glass panels can be slid into position to prevent unwanted breezes, or fully opened to create an enormous aft deck area. Throughout the yacht, whether on the crew’s side or within the owner’s areas, Eidsgaard Design has striven to improve on CMN’s existing 60m platform, to produce a wonderfully elegant yacht with exciting contemporaryspaces, mostbefittinga futureflagship fortheever-expandingCMNfleet.
