Welcome to the AFLC Schools Christmas ConcertWhether you’re a first-time visitor, family or friend of a student, or a graduate of our schools, we are glad you have joined us.

ABOUT THE AFLC SCHOOLSFounded in 1964 by the Association Free Lutheran Congregations (aflc.org), the Free Lutheran Schools include a two year post-secondary program (Association Free Lutheran Bible School, aflbs.org) and a four year pastoral training program at the Masters of Divinity level (Association Free Lutheran Theological Seminary, aflts.org). The Free Lutheran Schools are fully accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS, tracs.org).

MUSIC AT THE AFLC SCHOOLSFor over fifty years, AFLBS has had a high standard of excellence and involvement in praising our God through music ensembles. AFLBS features two choirs (Concert and Proclaim) and a Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Smaller ensembles include a men’s quartet, mixed quartet, women’s trio, mixed ensemble, and two worship leading teams. AFLTS also places a great importance on musical training for seminarians, requiring them to be a part of the Seminary Chorus for at least two of their three years of study. Private music lessons, including voice, piano, guitar, organ, and violin, are available to students in both schools.

SING A NEW SONGThe AFLC Schools are excited to be a part of commissioning Minneapolis-based composer Lloyd Larson to write a new set of songs based on The Hallel (Psalms 113–118). These psalms are deeply rooted in our Judeo-Christian heritage and are largely psalms of praise. Today’s concert features three of these six songs. They call us to praise the Lord for His steadfast love and faithfulness, to give thanks to God, and to trust in the salvation we have in Him.

Thank you for joining us today as we behold God’s ultimate sign of love and source of salvation, Jesus Christ.

The YearningCraig Courtney | Text: Susan Bentall Boersma

There is a yearning in hearts weighed down byAncient grief and centuries of sorrow. There is a yearning in hearts that in the darkness hideAnd in the shades of death abide, a yearning for tomorrow.

There is a yearning, a yearning for the promised One,The firstborn of creation. There is a yearning for the Lord who visited His own,And by His death for sin atoned,To bring to us salvation.

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning.Emmanuel, Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning.

There is a yearning that fills the hearts of those who waitThe day of His appearing. There is a yearning when all our sorrows are erased andWe shall see the One who placed Within our hearts the yearning.

hymn: Angels from the Realms of GloryText: James Montgomery | Tune: Henry Smart, REGENT SQUARE, arr. Camp Kirlkand

1. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.” Joyful all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th’ angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem.” Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King.”

2. Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord; Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail th’ Incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with man to dwell; Jesus, our Immanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King.”

3. Hail, the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King.”

A cross within the wooden manger, A thorn within each piece of straw,A traitor in each kneeling stranger, A tomb within the cattle stall.

Swaddling clothes, a linen shroud, Angel choirs, an angry crowd,Each gloria a requiem, Golgotha in Bethlehem.

The joy and Passion intertwining, At the moment of the Savior’s birth; And as the star was brightly shining, The shadow of the cross fell on the earth.

1. Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o’er all the earth; Ye who sang creation’s story, Now proclaim Messiah’s birth, Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King.

2. Shepherds in the field abiding, Watching o’er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing; Yonder shines the Infant Light; Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King.

3. Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord descending, In His temple shall appear; Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King.

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemenarr. Philip Kern | Traditional English Carol

God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay.Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day;To save us all from Satan’s pow’r when we were gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,O tidings of comfort and joy.

From God, our heav’nly Father, A blessed angel came; And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same; How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name.

Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place,And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas all others doth deface:

Offering Rachel Papillon, piano soloThe offering from the AFLC Schools Christmas Concert will go toward purchasing additional choir robes.

Rise Up, Shepherdarr. Jack Schrader | Source: African-American Spiritual

There’s a star in the east on Christmas morn.Rise up, shepherd, and follow. It will lead to the place where the Savior’s born.Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Follow, follow; rise up, shepherd, and follow;Follow the star of Bethlehem, rise up, shepherd, and follow.

If you take good heed to the angel’s word,Rise up, shepherd, and follow. You’ll forget your flock, you’ll forget your herd.Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Before the marvel of this nightAdoring, fold your wings and bow, Then tear the sky apart with lightAnd with your news the world endow.Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace, That fear and death and sorrow cease: Sing peace, sing peace, sing gift of peace, Sing peace, sing gift of peace!

Awake the sleeping world with song, This is the day the Lord has made.Assemble here, celestial throng, In royal splendor come arrayed. Give earth a glimpse of heav’nly bliss, A teasing taste of what they miss:Sing bliss, sing bliss, sing endless bliss, Sing bliss, sing endless bliss!

The love that we have always known, Our constant joy and endless light,Now to the loveless world be shown,Now break upon its deathly night. Into one song compress the love, That rules our universe above:Sing love, sing love, sing God is love, Sing love, sing God is love!

hymn: O Little Town of BethlehemText: Phillips Brooks | Tune: Lewis Redner, ST. LOUIS

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O servants of the Lord!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O servants of the Lord!Sing your praise with voices raised to God who reigns on high.Praise the Lord, lift your voice, and praise the Lord!

Blessed be the name of the Lord forevermore; From the breaking of the dawn to the setting sun.For His glory shines above the highest heavens!Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Who is like the Lord, our God, who sits enthroned on high,The Lord, our God, the holy One we glorify? He gives a home to the homeless, a child to the childless; From the dust the poor are raised to reign on high!

1. Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon Virgin Mother and Child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

2. Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born!

3. Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

1. O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

2. For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth; And praises sing to God our King, and peace to all the earth.

3. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel.

Please extinguish candles at this time, or earlier if needed

Born to Die to Set Us FreeDavid C. Dickau | Text: Anonymous

Jesu, Jesu, born to die,Jesu, Jesu was born to die upon a tree.Jesu, Jesu was born to die to set us free.

Blessed be that maid Marie, Born was He of her body; Very God ere time began, Born in time the Son of Man.

He at Bethlehem was born, Salem gave Him crown of thorn, Life of want and death of scorn, All for love of man forlorn.

hymn: Joy to the WorldText: Isaac Watts | Tune: George F. Handel, ANTIOCH

1. Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing.

2. Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: Let all their songs employ, While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sin and sorrow grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found.

4. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.

Give thanks to God for He is good; His love endures forevermore.Rejoice, give thanks, and bless His name,The God whom we adore.

In my distress I cried to the Lord,He heard my humble plea.I shall not fear; I will trust in Him,For He shall set me free.

The Lord is my strength, everlasting song,My light and my salvation. With shouts of joy and victory,Praise the King of all creation!

Open the gates of righteousness That I may enter in.Give thanks to the Lord, our God and King,Who delivers us from sin.For the stone that the builders rejected Has become the cornerstone!Blessed is He who comesIn the name of the Lord!

Trust in the Lord. Trust in the Lord.He shall be your help and your shield,Trust in the Lord.Fear the Lord, O Israel, trust in the Lord.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,O servants of the Lord!Sing your praise with voices raised to GodWho reigns on high.Praise the Lord, lift your voice,And praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Once in Royal David’s CityHenry Gauntlett, arr. Joel Raney | Text: Cecil F. Alexander

Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed,Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for His bed:Mary was that mother mild; Jesus Christ, her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all,And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor and meek and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

Jesus is our childhood’s pattern; Day by day like us He grew;He was little, weak, and helpless; Tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feels for all our sadness, And He shares in all our gladness.

Congregation – please stand and sing:And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heav’n above; And He leads His children on To the place where He has gone.

Merry Christmas! May God bless you this Christmas season! Please leave your candle in the boxes provided at the back of the chapel.
