Three years ago with my dear friend AngelaTeasedale, who works for Corrections Victoria.we discussed the possibility of taking a choirwe were both involved in to sing for thewomen at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre,Melbourne’s women’s prison. But I neverthought it would result in me writing thisintroduction to a CD cover for a recording of songs that I would make with the prisoners themselves.

It has been such an honour to be allowed intotheir world and into their lives to share mypassion for music and singing, and I can only hope they will be so proud of theirachievements as they listen to this CD for the first time, wherever they may be now.(Some of the women were released fromTarrengower Prison during the recordingsessions, and some have been released sincewe finished in April 2009.)

The experiences that we shared togethercollectively have left an indelible mark on myheart and on how I value my freedom today –something that I’m sure most of us never give a second thought about as we go aboutour day to day lives, perhaps makingdecisions that could in a moment land us inthe same predicament that led these women to their incarceration.

The creation of a choir and the ability to feelthat you are free to express yourself throughsinging is not something that prison life wouldnormally be a natural home to. In fact I couldhonestly say that it is the antithesis of aconducive music-making environment, giventhe rigours and ever-present scrutiny of theprison guards, and strict regimes of ‘musters’and the like. The ‘system’ was initiallycautious, but eventually opened its heart andmind to all my weird and wonderful musicaland vocal tricks and antics, that were reallydesigned to help gain the women’s trust andbuild their confidence and self esteem – nomean feat in a prison, I can assure you.

There are so many people I would like tothank for their extraordinary support of mydream to implement this project, in particularthe entire staff and team at CorrectionsVictoria and Tarrengower Prison itself (KelvinAnderson, Rod Wise, Christine Panayotou,Mandy Smith, Deb Trowell to name a few);Dasha Ross at ABC TV; the amazing teamfrom Renegade Factual (in particular AlexWest, Lucy Maclaren, Tarni James, LynneButler and ‘Cameron the Cameraman’) thathelped negotiate, support, craft and deliver atthe ‘coal face’ such a beautiful experience forthe women in particular, and navigate throughthe daily twists and turns of working within

the Corrections system; and master filmmaker and story teller Bruce Permezel,Director of the Choir of Hard Knocks series: itwas a great privilege to work with him then, and without him I would not have evenconsidered taking on such a project as this.

The other most important person whom I feelso honoured to have had by my side again, each step of the way – we worked together onall the Choir of Hard Knocks CDs andarrangements, and three years later he is stillthere with me each week, with the Choir nowknown as Hope and Inspiration – is StephenBlackburn: accompanist, songwriter andextraordinarily unassuming talent, and a manI am proud to call my friend. Stephen indulgedall my daring and wild schemes for the womento move beyond just singing as a choir in thisproject, and to allow them to really expressthemselves through the songwritingworkshops and subsequent recordings.

It was also such a treat to have the amazingsupport and talents of Australia’s first lady ofcountry music, the pint-sized, enormouslygenerous and big-hearted Kasey Chambers, whose voice, great songwriting skills andmusic touched each and every one who had thepleasure of working with her – thank you,Kasey, for being so generous with your time, and thanks also to Nash (Kasey’s brother and

manager) for assisting with Kasey’sparticipation and the recording of the fantastictheme song for Voices from Inside with lyricsfor the verses written by the women (in halfan hour over a cup of coffee, I might add).

Huge thanks also to the support of the localcommunities in Castlemaine and Maldon, in particular Mickey Levis and theInstrAmental Music Centre for their patienceand support during the 40 recording sessions, and the Theatre Royal Castlemaine forallowing us to use their fabulous facilities tobring the women in to record these tracksand have the ‘real experience’ of working in a professional environment.

And finally to the women that helped createthe Voices from Inside choir. I cannot nameyou for obvious legal reasons, but to each andevery one of you, I cannot tell you how much I miss making music with you each week, and how proud I am, not only of what youachieved, but of your support for each other, overcoming so many obstacles and emotions toproduce such beautiful music in just five short months.

Thank you for trusting me, for allowing me toshow you and the world what a wonderfullyeuphoric experience music-making can be, andthat if you open your heart and mind to other

experiences and possibilities, you will be ableto look back at your time at Tarrengower asmore than a life crisis, but see it as a turningpoint, to look forward to filling in those ‘blankpages’ that are your future, however and withwhomever you choose to write them, andalways with a song in your heart.
