Eighty-nine year old Mr Frank Stuban, granfather to senior Paul and freshman Bridget Monks, shared his experiences of World War II, specifically as a kidnapped young man detained in a forced labor camp, from 1941-1945. At just eighteen years of age, Mr Stuban was but one abductee of over twelve million across Eastern Europe. These individuals were taken and forced into heavy labor: mixing cement, building barracks, digging ditches, breaking stones and more, for twelve to fourteen hours every day, with little more than a bit of potato soup to sustain them. Mr Stuban spent four years in two such camps: Regensburg and Essen. Blessed with liberation by the American Forces, Mr Stuban spent a further two years in a displaced persons camp, before his eventual journey to the United States. His stories and remembrances of the War and of the Holocaust were shared with Ms Lowell’s classes on Friday, where he freely and candidly answered all questions from students, as well as offering insight and hope into such a dark time in our collective history. Thank you, Mr Stuban. MARDI GRAS... ...came a week early this year, with costumes, beads and an after school celebration that included foods from around the world as well as a piper for the crowds. The day was completed with the well attended Talent Show in the evening. Thanks to all the faculty, staff and Clubs who made the day a success! (left: Patrick Hopkins ‘12 bounced his way through the halls as Tigger during SJ’s Mardi Gras celebrations) Suessical soon. Oh the places you’ll go! This year’s musical at SJ, Seussical, will open at the end of March. As songs are rehearsed and sets are built, the ensemble is now offering ads for sale to appear in the program. It’s a great way for businesses and individuals to get exposure and support the arts at SJ. Ads start at just $5 for a single line, to $60 for a full page—great value for any event. For more information, email Ms Loso at [email protected]. Deadline for all ads is Friday, March 2nd.

Juniors begin College Program. Following the successful College Planning evening last month, Guidance began last week in earnest preparing our Juniors for what lays beyond their four years at SJ. College Workshops for the Class of 2013 include: SATs/ACTs, Building your Transcript and Resume, Getting Involved; Naviance, Building your college list; The Common Application and Writing College Essays; The College Visit and Interview; You make the decision – looking at real college applications and comparing application candidates, Financial Aid, and Scholarships.

Tutoring for Student Success. Free tutoring sessions are available daily with former staff member and department head Mrs Doyle. She will be available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7-10.45am, and Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9am to help with homework, preparing for tests or with ACT or SAT math problems, in addition to science. Students should bring their textbook, notebook, calculator, pencils and questions to all tutoring sessions.

Sports Corner. Congratulations to Junior Steve D’Ascanio who reached new heights—literally—this past week as he took the Class M State Championship in High Jump with a leap of Six Feet Two Inches.

The St Joseph High School Womens Basketball has been busy as well. Senior night featured Nancy Stablein scoring her 1,000th point of her SJ career, including 22 points in Wednesday’s game alone. The women spent the past weekend off the

court ‘Freezin’ for a Reason’, too. Coach Lindwall and the team braved the cold February waters of the Long Island Sound and successfully raised over $2,000 for the kids at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. Next up for the Women is the state tournament:

watch this space.

Finally this week, congratulations to JV Cheer. The team took first place in the junior varsity division of the Naugatuck Greyhound Showdown, in addition to placing an impressive second overall at the competition. Go Cadets!

FINAL REMINDER: Financial aid applications for returning students, 2012-13 sophomore, junior and senior students, are available in the main and finance offices of the school or via download from the school’s website www.sjcadets.org. Applications can also be

submitted online at www.psas.org, using our school code: 3005. The application deadline is March 1, 2012. Please call Mrs Joanne Rodgerson 203.378.9378 x310 with any questions you may have.

cement, building barracks, digging ditches, breaking stones and more, for twelve to fourteen hours every day, with little more than a bit of potato soup to sustain them. Mr Stuban spent four years in two such

camps: Regensburg and Essen. Blessed with liberation by the American Forces, Mr Stuban spent a further two years in a displaced persons camp, before his eventual journey to the United States.
