Method for Evaluating and Adding Bluetooth Connectivity to

    Embedded Designs

In Combination With CandleDragons Bluetooth Stack, Kit Enables Flexible Development With a

Wide Range o 16-/32-bit PIC MCUs and dsPIC DSCs

Microchip announced the Microchip Bluetooth Evaluation Kit, which includes third-party design partner CandleDragon,Inc.s dotstack demonstration Bluetooth Stack. The kit provides an easy, cost-eective and exible add-on or embeddedevaluation and development using many 16-/32-bit PIC microcontrollers or dsPIC digital signal controllers (DSCs). To speeddevelopment and urther reduce costs, the Microchip Bluetooth Kit works with the Companys existing tools.

While Bluetooth wireless technology is a common short-range protocol or PCs and consumer electronics, it is rapidly gainingpopularity among a broader set o embedded applications. However, the current Bluetooth wireless technology modules arecostly and inexible because they orce developers to use their predetermined baseband radio and microcontroller. Microchip andCandleDragons Bluetooth solution enables designers to pair a wide range o radio ICs or Bluetooth connectivity with many oMicrochips 16-/32-bit PIC microcontrollers or dsPIC DSCs. Additionally, CandleDragons dotstack Bluetooth stack is Bluetooth SIGcompliant and supports multiple profles in a single microcontroller including SPP, HFP and HID with more profles planned orMicrochips MCUs in the near uture.

Microchip makes it easy or our customers to cost-eectively evaluate and add Bluetooth wireless technology to their designs, with minimal development time and low risk. Our new Microchip Bluetooth Evaluation Kit, combined with CandleDragons BluetoothStack, goes one step urther in enabling embedded Bluetoothconnectivity.

Gate Drive Schemes for Motor Control ApplicationsThe type of motor, power-switching topologyand the power-switching element will generallydictate the necessary gate drive scheme. Thetwo fundamental categories for gate drive arehigh-side and low-side. High-side means that

the source (MOSFET) or emitter (IGBT) of thepower element can float between ground andthe high-voltage power rail. Low-side meansthe source or emitter is always connected toground. An example of both of these types canbe seen in a half-bridge topology, shown here.

In this configuration, Q1 and Q2 are always in opposite states. When Q1 goesfrom being off to on, the voltage at the source of the MOSFET goes from groundup to the high-voltage rail. This means that the voltage applied to the gate mustfloat up as well. This requires some form of isolated, or floating, gate drivecircuitry. Q2, however, always has its source or emitter connected to ground sothe gate drive voltage can also be referenced to ground. This makes the gatedrive much simpler.

Various schemes exist for high-side gate drive applications. These includesingle-ended or double-ended gate drive transformers, floating bias voltages andopto-isolator drive. Examples of these drive schemes are shown in Figures 1through 3.

Microchips MOSFET drivers fit a wide variety of applications using the gate driveschemes shown. Microchips single output drivers, which have ratings of 0.5Aup to 12A, work well for the single-ended gate drive needs for the circuits inFigures 1 and 3. Microchips dual output drivers provide an excellent solution forthe gate drive solution shown in Figure 2.

Join Patrick Heath, Strategic Marketing Manager, as he discusses Techniques or Improved Stepper Motor Control".Typical stepper motor control uses an open-loop, voltage-control method, where the aster the voltage ramps in the motorphase, the quicker the step is taken. While this method works well, it is not optimized or energy efciency nor speed. Usinga low-cost, motor-control digital signal controller with comparators, a closed-loop, current-control mode o operation can beimplemented. This control method provides a signifcant step speed increase o up to 25 times aster, At the same time,by controlling the currents, stepper-motor energy consumption is optimized. Another signifcant advantage o this controltechnique is a marked reduction in the motor noise level.Register online at: http://www.e-driveonline.com

For any training program to be eective it needs to provide the rightinormation at the right time in the right place to the right people. The morethese conditions arent met, the less eective the training becomes. To helpour customers get the most rom the technical training we oer, Microchip isrolling out two new training initiatives to supplement the courses given in ournetwork o Regional Training Centers (RTC) and by third-party trainers.

While classroom based training is a great opportunity to interact with aknowledgeable instructor, its eectiveness can be hampered by the needto travel to the classroom. I the knowledge you need is not available in aconvenient location when you want it, the costs and time associated withtravel may make attendance impractical. To help overcome this obstacle,Microchip is now oering several RTC courses via the internet using MicrosotLive Meeting. These are the same instructor led classes optimized or onlinedelivery. You dont need to wait or a par ticular class to come to your town ortravel to attend take the class when you need it rom the convenience o
