ELEMENTARY LITERACY
DIBELS MOY window closes February 1, 2013. This is an important time to review our data and make instructional adjustments. Please let me know if you need any support accessing the reports on mclasshome.com that facilitate this process. Upcoming Meeting for Instructional Leaders: February 7, 2013: Our focus will be on the resources shared from Dr. Bear’s presentation on Words Their Way. Upcoming Professional Development for teachers: Treasures 201 for Second and Third Grade Teachers. This three-day opportunity will dig in to the components, Universal Access Time, writing instruction, connections to the CCSS, planning and ELD. Schools must provide their own sub coverage. Second grade sessions: January 30-February 1, 2013 & February 13-15, 2013 Third grade sessions: February 20-22, 2013 & February 27-March 1, 2013 Registration is on the Learning Zone. CCSS Follow-Up: Session for K, 1, and 6: Implementation of the CCSS This is two-day follow-up to the three-day introduction to the CCSS last summer. The focus of the ELA day will provide teachers with lessons and planning resources for teaching students to closely read a text using text-dependent questions. At the end of the day, teachers will be able to teach a lesson where students closely read a text. Ideally, the same teachers who attended the K, 1, 6 training last June 2012 would attend this training. However, if those teachers are not available, please choose someone who can attend and bring this great information back to your school. The expectation is that the person who attends the training will be able to facilitate grade-level meetings and share what is learned with his/her peers. The dates of the training are February 9 and March 9, 2013 or February 10 and March 10, 2013. Registration is on the Learning Zone.

Q/A: How might we better support students to pass the CAHSEE mathematics exam?
CAHSEE Diagnostic Tool
LAUSD no longer offers a CAHSEE diagnostic exam as part of its bank of periodic assessment tools. For those sites interested in a free, high-quality alternative to assess student intervention needs, consider the use of the newly developed ―Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Program‖ (MDTP) CAHSEE Diagnostic (“CP”) examination. This is a newly released exam, and for more information, see the MDTP brochure at: http://mdtp.ucsd.edu/MDTPBrochure.pdf
Paper-pencil versions are free, as is the scoring by MDTP; online versions of the exams are available at a small fee. ISIC secondary mathematics recommends that sites consider administering the exam before students leave for Winter break, for the most timely and impactful results. For more information, contact:
UCLA MDTP Office: (310) 825-9477 Fax: (310) 825-8914 Email: [email protected] or [email protected]
To arrange free, on-site training as to how to best analyze and make instructional use of the date from this diagnostic tool, contact at the information above:
Mary Sirody, MDTP Site Director University of California, Los Angeles Mathematics Department 2353 MS 520 Portola Plaza Los Angeles, CA 90095-1555.

secondary mathematics, the four awareness modules and Math Module 1 (Focus) and Math
Module 2 (Math Practice #3) are to supplemented for grade 6 mathematics teacher and grade
9 teachers of Algebra I with an additional eight (8) sessions during grade level or department
meeting time, led by teachers who received training from Central LAUSD or an LESC in
Common Core math 6 or Algebra I.
As many of the months indicated in MEM-5897.0’s Attachment B are already past, school sites
are encouraged to view these ―soft dates.‖ For those sites with full professional development
calendars, ISIC secondary mathematics recommends that at a minimum, grade level teams
select the following modules for collaborative learning in a PLC forum.
While the overall goal for LAUSD is CCSS awareness, grades 6 and 9 are to consider and plan
for ways in which to launch students’ development of math practice 3 in units of study with
increased academic focus this school year.

2012-2013
LAUSD Common Core Math:
All grade levels incorporate Math Practice 3 and shift to increased focus, depth.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Mathematically proficient students understand and use stated assumptions, definitions, and previously established results in constructing arguments. They make conjectures and build a logical progression of statements to explore the truth of their conjectures. They are able to analyze situations by breaking them into cases, and can recognize and use counterexamples. They justify their conclusions, communicate them to others, and respond to the arguments of others. They reason inductively about data, making plausible arguments that take into account the context from which the data arose. Mathematically proficient students are also able to compare the effectiveness of two plausible arguments, distinguish correct logic or reasoning from that which is flawed, and—if there is a flaw in an argument—explain what it is. Elementary students can construct arguments using concrete referents such as objects, drawings, diagrams, and actions. Such arguments can make sense and be correct, even though they are not generalized or made formal until later grades. Later, students learn to determine domains to which an argument applies. Students at all grades can listen or read the arguments of others, decide whether they make sense, and ask useful questions to clarify or improve the arguments.
