Principal’s Message

The end of February is here. Where has the time gone? Once again Alexander School has been working hard and creating amazing projects. The Science Fair was a good example of this. It was great to see the gym full of fantastic projects. The experiments that were designed displayed some creative think-ing skills from our students. I would like to thank the judges for volunteering their time to come to our school and discuss the projects with our children. Your help was greatly appreciated. Parent/teacher/student conferences are scheduled for March 19th and 20th. I am looking forward to

seeing everyone again. The Art Gallery will be set up in the gym, so make sure you allow yourself some extra time to view the student’s art work. The book fair will also be set up in the gym at this time. If you would like to volunteer to work at the book fair, please call us at the school. Your help is greatly appreciated. Spirit Week and I Love to Read Week will take place from March 2nd to March 6th. This will be a fun time for all the students. During this week we have Prairie Theatre Exchange coming to the school to present stories from Robert Munsch as well as the grades 5 to 8 students hosting a Festival Du Voyageur for our students in K to 4. It is going to be a fun and exciting week. We are sad to see Mr. Hickman leave, but we wish him well as he takes some time to be with his family. I am

pleased to announce and welcome Mr. Wyatt Urbanski to the gym. Mr. Urbanski will be teaching in the gym from April 1st to June 30th, 2015. He comes to us with a major in physical education from Minot State University. We are looking forward to Mr. Urbanski joining the Alexander team. It is great to work with students, staff, parents, and community members as we continue to provide high quality educational experi-ences for all of our students. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns at any time throughout the school year, please con-tact us at the school. It is essential that we work as a team to support your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Your Partner in Education Shelley Cords

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Student Led Conferences will be held on March 19 & 20. Conference times went home with the

youngest student in your family on Friday, February 20. If you did not receive a letter, or if you

need to change your time, please contact your child’s teacher.

Multiage Grade 5/6 – Mr. Carr

February was a very active month for the 5/6 class with many outdoor activities. In Math the students started their unit on Measurement. In Social Studies, students are still working on a Unit on New France and the early settle-ments of what would become Canada. In French we learned French songs and vocabulary about Les Voyageurs. We also learned how to weave in Social Studies and made small tapestries. This month has been very busy with Festi-val du Voyageur, Skating and skiing. Making the most of Manitoba winters!

Multiage Grade K/1 – Mrs. Clayton/Mrs. McKay

Wow what a busy month! We celebrated the 100th Day of School. We had so much fun with 100 foot-steps, spending $100.00, creating a 100 animal zoo and going on a 1-100 Scavenger Hunt. In Math we started Sort-ing and Patterns. The students are enjoying bringing collections from home for our Share and Sort time. We also celebrated Valentine’s Day and had a blast with our Valentine Crafternoon! In Science we have wrapped up our Color Unit and are starting to learn about Paper. Thanks so much to all parents who sent treats for our parties this month.

Multiage Grade 2-4– Mrs. Wood O’Grady, Mrs. McKay, Mrs. Kohut

The grade 2-3-4 classes have had a fun and busy February. We celebrated Valentine's Day with art activities, theme centers, and a Valentine's Day party. In social studies we finished up our study on our basic responsibility and rights. The classes each created books rep-resenting our rights and responsibilities through art. In science students are learning four basic bridge designs and how each bridge is specially engineered to withstand tension and compression. Students have been busy learning all about polygons, 3D shapes, perimeter, and area during our math time.

Physical Education – Mr. Hickman

The Grade 7-8 Basketball Co-Ed team has had a great basketball season up to date. The team took part in the mid-season jamboree that was held at Waverly Park School on February 6 & 7. The players played very well and repre-sented Alexander school and community. The Year End Jamboree will be taking place on March 7-8 at a B.S.D. School, the location is T.B.A. Thanks again to Mr. Onischuk for volunteering his time to coach. The Grade 4-5-6 gymnastic jamboree took place February 13th at Eagles Gymnastics, the team consisted of Jaeda, Ashlyn, Ally, Kendal, Trinity, Annie, Emily, Danielle, Brigitte, Colsie, Xaviare, Sienna, Mason and Braxton. Thanks again to Mrs. Clay-ton for volunteering her time to coach this year’s team.

Multiage Grade 7/8 – Mr. Onischuk

In E.L.A we are reading, writing and creating art based on biographies the students are studying. In science, we are answering essential question in regards to optics like “Why is the sky blue?” and “How do contact lenses work?” In social studies, we are setting up our Ancient Egypt Museum, where we will showcase our knowledge about this ancient society. In math, we are diving into the wonderful world of algebra. What do you call your friends who love math?… Algebros!! In Shop class, students were racing their CO2 cars while the Home-Ec stu-

dents are cooking up dinner time dishes.

NEW PHONE NUMBERS

Alexander School has recently had the phones updated. The new number for the main office is 729-2790 although the old num-

ber will continue to work as well. Mrs. Ballingall has a direct line now and her number is 729-2792. The fax number will re-

main the same (752-2509).

SAFETY CONCERN There has been an increase with safety concerns when students are dropped off in the morning and picked up

after school. In consultation with the RM Office and the RCMP we have placed pylons across the road from

8:30-9:00 am and from 3:15-3:30 pm. We must remember that vehicles traveling in either direction MUST

STOP when a school bus is stopped with its alternating red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

If found guilty of violating this section of The Highway Traffic Act, you are subject to a penalty of

up to $655.65, and two demerits will be applied against your driver’s licence. Please note that one

of our buses is equipped with cameras that record the interior and exterior of the bus.

If you are parking along the road, please slow down, wait and watch for students crossing at all

times. We are asking for your cooperation to ensure the safety of all students.

Thank you for your support!
