DON'T BE ANXIOUS

People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they're having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refo-cus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What's for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or un-employment. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn't say, "Don't eat. Don't cook. Don't buy clothes." He says, "Don't worry." Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that "Your heavenly Father knows" all that you need (Matthew 6:32).

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner

Matthew 6:24-34: “And All These Things Will Be Given To You…”

This Sunday we come to that part in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount where we hear a very profound statement from the mouth of the Savior: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides,” (Mt 6:33). This saying very much sums up the whole of the famous Sermon. As we say again and again, the imperative to strive for God’s Kingdom must take precedence over everything in the life of a disciple. Any follower of Jesus must have a single-minded devotion in pur-suit of the Kingdom. Understood in this context, the above mentioned state-ment makes sense and would not lead to misconceptions. However, there is another side to this Gospel passage that can lend itself to undesirable interpretations. Jesus tells his disciples: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear… Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all… and they will be given you.” Taken out of context, these sayings may seem to imply that the disciples (and ultimately, we ourselves) do not have to do anything be-cause our Father in heaven will provide. Here I would like to recall the dis-tinction between text and context. In itself, a text is only a multitude of words: what is written on paper. The context is the world behind the text, or that which gives meaning to the text. Obviously the context is very important. We know that any book in the Bible did not just fall from the sky, but was written from a particular context. The Gospel of Matthew was written within the context of a small early Christian community that included members who were both of Jewish and Gentile origin. Just like any com-munity, there were differences. For example, as we know well from Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, the Christians at Corinth were plagued by “dissentions and quarreling,” (see 1 Cor 1:10-11). However, despite all their differences and disagreements, members of the early Christian communities also saw to the fact that their fellow Christians had enough to eat and drink. They did have concern for one another. So when these statements of Jesus (about not worrying) were heard by the Matthean community, they made perfect sense for the members. The members were not advised to be lazy and to wait for God to provide. Rather, they were admonished to see to the fact that no one would go hungry and thirsty. What does this Gospel passage mean for us? For one thing, we have to believe that in principle, the God who made the whole universe out of nothing, and who provided manna for the thousands of Israelites in the desert, could give us our daily bread without us having to do anything. However, in reality, that is not going to happen. Chances are that God also relies on us to help one another, to see to the fact that our brothers and sisters do not go hungry or thirsty. God leaves that task to us! We are charged to act on God’s behalf too—and not just naively relying on God’s power and thinking that God will take care of everything!

Él no dice: "No coman. No cocinen. No compren ropa". Él dice: "No te

preocupes".

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
