Partial wedges and pitches are the scoring shots. That’s just as true for tour players as it is for a 15-handicapper. If you have 20 to 80 yards into a green, aone-putt is your goal. The players who are better at itmake more birdies, save more pars and getthemselves out of more jams. The keys are to pick theright shot for the situation and to take control of threefactors: distance, height and spin. SET uP FOR THE SHOT YOu WANT TO HiT1. LOW PiTCHA low, skipping pitch shot is a great play when youhave lots of green to work with and can roll the ball tothe hole. Your stance is slightly open, and the ball isback, off your right heel. Keep the clubface square toslightly open to make the bounce on the club’s soleskid along the turf. 2. STANdARd PiTCHGood players hit standard pitch shots from a neutraladdress position—a square stance and clubface, amiddle ball position and only a slight forward lean ofthe shaft. As you swing the club, you want to feel likeyou’re hitting a mini hook shot, but still skimming theclub’s sole off the turf. 3. HiGH PiTCHPitch shots stop quickly for two reasons: height andbackspin. By opening the face and moving the ballforward, you pre-set a higher flight. You also needmore speed to create spin, so turn your body fasterinstead of flashing your hands through impact. Flashspeed is hard to control. FOCuS ON A FEW SiMPLE SWiNG KEYS1. SWiNG SHAPE On longer wedge shots, a steeper, V-shape swingbeats shallow and U-shape. Feel your weight forward,on your front knee, and pivot around that knee. Tryto return the clubface at impact with the same loft ithad at address. Pushing your hands way forwardaffects aim and contact. 2. MATCHiNG uPDeceleration on the downswing is a killer on anypitch. The longer the shot, the bigger your swingshould be—on both sides of the ball. Match the size ofyour backswing and finish, and keep your grippressure constant.
