Although leap days only occur once every four years, there is a lot of history surrounding the day; history beyond the difference between Gregorian and Julian calendars. The Leap year originated when Julius Caesar revamped the Roman calendar to include 365 days. This calendar did not match the solar calendar which was six hours longer than 365 days. Therefore an extra day was added every fourth year so that the Julian calendar could “catch up” to the solar calendar. As I see it there is only one downfall to Leap Day. Those of you who are on a fixed annual wage… you get to work for free that day, and to boot, it’s a Monday this year. It may be justified to call in sick that day. Enjoy the extra day! It takes the Earth exactly 365.242189 days to make a full orbit around the Sun. That means that our 365 day calendar is six hours shy every year. This is why an extra day was added every four years. Useless Knowledge The Roman month Februarius was named after the Latin term februum, which means

purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old

lunar Roman calendar.

Roman numerals are great for making an event appear traditional and filled with history; that is until that event reaches fifty years old. The NFL decided that they would replace the traditional roman numerals that identified the sequence so far, l – XLIX (1-49), with modern numbers due to the lack of flash that the “L” provided. I would also assume that NFL upper management is trying to avoid seeing fans with their hands in the shape of an L on their foreheads.

There is nothing better than filling a large room with friends who are willing and able to use their camping time to make your camping experience unforgettable. The illustrious Poor Farmer’s RV Activity Committee gathered together to discuss the 2016 Activity Schedule and boy did the discussion get interesting. For those of you who had a great time last year, don’t fear, your favorite activities will be here again this year. In place of the activities that were a total bomb, like mud volleyball and the hot dog eating contest, the committee has some new activities for us to try. Here are a couple teasers for you to nibble on until you receive your official schedule. Trivia Night: We will test your knowledge of useless information; from Pop culture to 13th Century Mongolian history. We will see who has the best BHG (Brain Housing Group) in the campground. Lip Sync Battle: LL Cool J and his beautiful Co-host Chrissy Teigen have been making TV history with their new show Lip Sync Battle, and since they have not responded to my request to get my campers on their show, we have decided to put together our own battle of lip sync contestants. Hungry Hungry Hippos: You gotta see it to believe it. Along with these show stoppers, we will have more information in our 2016 mailer so watch your mailbox. Camping season is right around the corner.

I was standing in the kitchen at Grandma Shields’ house a couple of days after she had passed. Pastor Ed Ellis sat at the head of the table with Uncle Rick, Aunt Becky, Mom, Dad and the rest of the family ready to unload a lifetime of memories on him. He was waiting to fill his blank paper with enough information to deliver a proper memorial for our Grandma, Loretta Shields. After a slight hesitation, Uncle Rick told Pastor Ed about how Grandma grew up during a time when material things were tough to come by; because of this she became very frugal, only buying what she needed and taking great care of what she did have. Once the ice was broken with that simple statement, the flood gates opened and the memories flowed like water onto Pastor Ed’s paper. He heard stories about Loretta’s love for genealogy, and how she traced her heritage back to the Revolutionary War and further. He heard about the time she almost drowned at the gravel pit, and afterward, she not only learned to swim, but became a swimming instructor. Grandma made a habit of passing her knowledge on to others. In fact, we had someone contact us to give her condolences who was a student of Grandma’s many years ago. Grandma was such a connoisseur of distributing knowledge, that her trademark motto was; “You learn something new every day.” Grandma considered herself a “By the way” girl, because of the fact that she

was born on Christmas Day. The family would often hand her a Christmas present followed with the statement, “by the way, here is your birthday present also.” It was in Loretta’s nature to shrug her shoulders at these types of situations as an alternative to getting upset. Some of Grandma’s jobs through the years were mostly part time positions where she would earn a little “saving money” just in case Grandpa Bill spent too much. She had a mobile paper route and delivered flowers for Jan’s Flower Shop in Vandalia. For three months every year she worked at the License Bureau just so she could get her personalized plates, which read “BACK OFF!.” Of course I’m joking about the vanity plate; that would have been a terrible waste of money. When grandma passed, the only people who took it harder than our family was the sales team at QVC. Grandma would call into QVC and it didn’t matter which operator picked up the phone; they all

answered the same way, “Hi Loretta!” She loved traveling, and I am told that one of her favorite trips was when Rick and Nancy took her to QVC in Pennsylvania. With all of these wonderful memories about Grandma Shields, the one that sticks out most in my mind are the times after the flea market when she would ride around with me and help pick up trash; it was those moments that I really got to know who Loretta Shields was. She always needed to help, no matter what it was. For all of you campers who have been here for a couple of years and have received the mailer from us in the spring, know that it was Grandma Shields who copied, folded and stamped every one of those mailers. Grandma will be sorely missed by all who knew her. That emptiness can only be filled with the comfort that she is now with the folks who made her such a great person. I would like to thank everyone who gave their condolences, came to the memorial, or just threw a thoughtful prayer in the direction of the family. I would also like to give a special thank you to Chaplin Ed Ellis with Hospice of Miami County, for giving his time to Grandma both before and after her passing. The memorial service that he gave was eloquent and full of love. I’m sure he would tell us that it reflected the woman for whom it was intended. We will miss you Grandma Shields!

Charlie’s Chat is a monthly installment in The Monthly Chatter which

honors Charlie Ellis. Charlie was a friend to many and one of the hardest

working employees to ever grace the gravel roads of Poor Farmer’s.

As with any activity, you should have a plan. When it comes to getting yourself and family prepared for the camping season, there are a couple points that you need to keep in mind.

Remember last year when you said, “Next year we are going to talk to Mike and Denise about getting a new RV.” Well… it’s next year.

If you are interested in moving to a new camp site or if you are interested in putting you RV at Poor Farmer’s full time call Mike at 937-368-2449 and get your name on the list.

Call the Poor Farmer’s RV Service Department to schedule a “Summerization” for your coach. Marty and the team will get your RV de-winterized and check to make sure your appliances are ready to go for 2016. (See March Chatter for details)

Get your copy of our 2016 parts catalog. Take it home, start your wish list, and call Amy M. to get it all ordered.

Get your campsite ready. You don’t have to wait for May 1st to start working on your site. I will announce on Facebook and in the Chatter when we turn the water back on. *Remember* Site of the Month is up for grabs to anyone. Winners will be selected by a new,

top secret and highly sophisticated method.
